40th Anniversary Cake

I got a cold this weekend, but I didn't have time to be sick.  It was my parents' 40th anniversary and I had promised to make the cake for the party.  I alternated chocolate and peanut butter cake with a chocolate mousse for filling.  Since I needed red I caved and bought ribbon rather than try to make fondant ribbon that dark.  The 40th anniversary is the ruby anniversary so I couldn't go with another color.  The flowers and leaves are all gumpaste as well as the berries.  I really had fun making this one.  Although it's a little discouraging that I don't seem to get any faster at it.

Dora Backpack

My baby turned 2 years old last month!  Since she is obsessed with Dora the Explorer we had to do a Dora cake.  It turned out OK.  It was a 13X9 cake that I trimmed to fit the shape. If I had it to do again I would make it twice as thick or standing up.  It seems too flat.  However, by the look on her face, my little girl loved it and that is the most important thing.

crown and scepter cake

This was my first attempt at a free standing crown.  I admit it was not all I had hoped to do.  It is made from fondant with added gumtex to help stiffen it.  It was harder than I thought it would be.  I have seen some pretty amazing crowns in pictures online but can't seem to figure out the trick. I wanted to add jewels and other accents but it was too fragile to hold weight.

Puppy cake

This was a puppy cake for my nephew Hyrum.  It turned out OK but next time I think I would try to do the head a little smaller and put more batter into the body.  His head and body were cooked in pyrex bowls.

Mom's Birthday

This was a cake I did this summer for my mom obviously.  It was an attempt to make hydrangeas.  I think I should have added some leaves.

Lego Ninja cake

Here is Dylan's lego ninja cake. I did two 6 inch layers and one layer in a bowl that was the same width for the top of the head. It was chocolate with chocolate frosting. It turned out to be pretty simple in the end. I just set up the lego box from one of his presents when I did the eyes just to make sure that I got it right.

Hello Kitty

My niece Gwen asked for a Hello Kitty cake this year and I have to say it was probably the easiest cake I have done for months. I have the wilton pan for making a bear face and I just used that and cut back the ears to make them pointy like a cat. Then I covered it in fondant and the decorations were pretty basic. If only they were all this easy. It is a chocolate pound cake with chocolate frosting.
