Everyone poured themselves out of the car. We were full from dinner, full of good cheer. We were headed to the house, where inside we would celebrate Luna’s second birthday with cake and presents. The night sky was bright, and I looked up to see clouds swirling and undulating around the full Hunter’s moon like waves of the sea. The moon had a halo of light blue around it, an unusual and beautiful sight. Everyone went inside but me. I told them I would just be a minute. It was quiet, and I stood admiring the moon and sky overhead, wishing I could stay much longer. I wondered who Luna, named for the moon, would grow up to be.
The full Hunter’s moon

a beautiful dream

The Challenge: Whether itâs the light of Octoberâs Full Moon, or the fright of Halloween, letâs testify! Write a haibun that alludes to either the Hunterâs Moon or Halloween.
New to haibun? The form consists of one to a few paragraphs of proseâusually written in the present tenseâthat evoke an experience and are often non-fictional/autobiographical. They may be preceded or followed by one or more haikuânature-based, using a seasonal imageâthat complement without directly repeating what the prose stated.
