Of Köln and Home and Edinburgh

Sticks and footsteps,
Undermined by festering roots,
My brave face almost there;
And the other day a hare!
Kings! of what?
Of the rulers and the badgers,
Never mind my body snatchers—
Faces flicker under rails,
Mangled,
So that I'd grow disillusioned,
And compress my luggage;
For the wonton tour,
Has left me with a pretzel—
Ah lackaday, I hear the Scotsman say.
Told you I'd still upload occasionally, I meant it. Hope you enjoyed! (WC 63)

By Anton Jarvis

I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful‚
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.

Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.

  • Analysis ( hide ) Truth is a cold, hard surface. Compared to the raw, emotional anger in her other stuff, this one chills you with its emotionless, god-like objectivity saying, "I am not cruel, only truthful."
  • Aging is a horror show. It nails the modern dread of watching your self-image die, swapping a young girl for an "old woman... like a terrible fish" - way more grotesque and lasting than a simple sad reflection.
  • The object owns the story. The poem’s power move is letting a mirror talk, ditching the typical human speaker. This flip lets us feel hunted by our own tools of self-scrutiny.
  • It switches form like a record scratch. The verse cuts cleanly from a still, framed mirror on a wall to a deep, passive-aggressive lake. That jarring shift is the formal equivalent of the shock the woman feels.
  • It’s about dependency, not identity. The core struggle isn't "who am I?" but being brutally yoked to the thing that shows you what you hate. The speaker brags, "I am important to her. She comes and goes," locking her in a cycle of misery.
  • It strips the feminine myth bare. While her peers might romanticize the moon or candles as gentle, soft light, this calls them "liars." The real deal is a harsh, daily truth that shows relentless change, not timeless beauty. (ai)

Stardust

like Icarus
I tried to fly

I spread my wings
to catch the air

breath in the breeze
lost to the wind

I longed to soar
beyond the sky

the stratosphere
beneath my feet

in outer space
with dying flames

Orion’s belt
called out to me

“Her Nebula,
my galaxy.

I will the night
to set thee free.”

imploding sun
a ball of gas

where stardust sang
“I’m all that lasts.”

Falling Stars

How i see you

In the curl

of your smiling mouth.

Dances the flame

of gravity

pulling on the metals

in my blood.

Like a moonsong

singing

lullabies.

Tugging waters

of my flesh.

Mélodies

swim

inside the twinkle

of your eyes

as I

make wishes

of

you and I

of your gaze.

Somewhere

in the sweep

of your

cheek

I

become

lost

or

found

it

really doesnt

matter

anyway

because

the chaos of your vision.

Becomes

the birth

of my

universe

every time

I

look at you.

Taking A Walk

Along the iron walkway
On this wet
evening
the trio lantern street lights
looking like candle holders
have come on early
glowing
golden in the fog.

It shares
with us bare
branches and
some trees
still with leaves
hanging
on casting
their rusty
color into the fog
that hasn't taken
over the buildings
structure completely.

As I walk clearing
my mind I hear dogs howling
and the chilly
wet on my face
as I brace
for entering
our home where

God took you earlier today.

tiny windows of time

i lost count of the rungs long ago
skies of white aglow
blue blankets tucked tight
warmth through the night
waters sound down below

piles and piles
stacks of stacks
wood of wood
in the shack

long times gone
counting flakes of the trees
bound up tight with leaves
flowing rivers of tears

being towed by the rush
of water sprays
of yellows and blue
fresh as the dew
damp with sorrow

deep in pain

The Thirty-Year Ghost

The porch light flickers on the rain-dark street,
Where hollow plastic skulls lie in the weeds;
Behind each door, familiar fears retreat
To rooms where something waits for what it needs.

No costumed stranger knocks upon the door,
Nor drags a heavy chain across the grass;
The terror waits beneath the kitchen floor,
And leans its cold forehead against the glass.

A childhood coat still hanging by the stair,
The screen spits static by the empty bed;
You lock the deadbolt on the silent air,
To bar the ghost that thirty years have fed.

It does not come with teeth or trailing sheet,
Nor raise a voice to tell you why it came;
It walks the empty hall on soundless feet,
And in the dark you almost speak its name.

No mask can hide the child you would forget;
The coat still hangs. It almost fits you yet.

"Some ghosts survive not because we believe in them, but because we never learned to leave them behind."
