The Need for a Car Survival Kit

As we watch in the news we hear almost daily of different natural disasters that take place around the globe. Different parts of the country are prone to different natural disasters. But there are countless situations that we can find ourselves in where we need to be prepared.

With winter approaching, there are many places around the country that will receive snowfall. You can never quite predict how bad a storm is until you are there. Sometimes by driving slow you can navigate through a storm, but there are situations where it is snowing too hard to see and the roads are too deep to drive in. Short drives can take hours to navigate. If you do get stranded in a blizzard you will want to be prepared to wait for a snow plow or for the storm to pass.

Without the right equipment you could be serious health risks, including hypothermia, exposure, or even death. Every year there are stories in the news about people who are stranded and are not able to get themselves out. If help does not come quickly, many people do not make it. Some of the things you will want to have in the trunk of your car would be:

  • Shovel
  • Jumper cable
  • Blanket
  • Protein bar
  • Flashlight
  • Multi-tool knife
  • Old cell phone fully charged
  • Lighter or waterproof matches
  • Duct tape
  • Compass
  • Map
  • Reflective tape or flares
  • First Aid Kit

Not only are these items useful in case of a snowstorm or blizzard, they can come in handy in many other situations where you would be able to either help yourself or someone else. Stay warm and stay calm. Avoid venturing out in the storm as many people can become lost or disoriented and do not have a shelter if the storm worsens.

Tsunamis

Lately we have heard of many tsunamis that have happened in Asia. Tsunamis can devastate entire communities and cities. But can they happen in the United States? First, let’s address what a Tsunami is.

A tsunami is the result of an earthquake that happens in the ocean. Because of the displacement of water, it can create waves that range from 10 feet high up to 150 feet high. And the waves can be spread out 45 minutes or less. They appear as an incoming tide but don’t stop and can go for miles inland.

There have been few tsunamis that have occurred on the east coast but most tsunamis happen on the west coast and primarily hit Hawaii and Alaska. The tallest tsunami on record to hit was in Alaska in 1964. The wave was 220 feet high.

Although noticeable tsunamis are not as common, you should know what to do when you hear a warning. There is an old saying that once you see a tsunami coming it is too late. If you hear a tsunami warning head for high ground as soon as you can.
