Roma Amor: A novel of Caligula's Rome
Purchase options and add-ons
How far will a father go to keep an old promise?
And how far will a son go to obey him?
Long ago, Marcus Carinna’s father promised to protect a dying friend’s little boy from cutthroat political rivals. That promise ultimately took the life of Carinna’s own son and heir . . . and drove Marcus, his headstrong younger son, to leave Rome.
Now a hero after crushing a Germanic revolt and capturing its leader’s daughter, Marcus is summoned home from the frontier. Yet neither girl nor glory concerns him as much as what his father is going to demand.
Because the orphaned boy didn’t simply survive. At the age of 25, he has just inherited an empire. History will know him as Caligula.
But his newfound power totters atop a precarious past. Conspiracy and corruption feed on his instability. He needs a trusted companion to steady him and keep him safe—the role for which Marcus’s older brother was groomed.
Pressed to fulfill his father’s old vow, Marcus is obliged by family honor to befriend the young emperor. If only honor could quench his own secret desire for the stubborn, bitter Germanic hostage, flame-haired Aurima, whose maidenhood makes her off-limits to him. . . .
Luckily, he has old friends to rely on, an influential mother, and a clever sister who adores him. Yet among the vicious currents swirling around Caligula’s throne, friends can become enemies, and even family can’t be trusted.
After years of defending Rome from foreign danger, Marcus thought he understood the cost of courage. He has no idea how little he really knows.
Amid the tempestuous forces of the young Roman Empire, treachery and desire collide in Roma Amor: A Novel of Caligula’s Rome.

Review
"The first installment in a page-turning saga that revisits the heroes and villains of the grandest city of the ancient world.... Comes alive with the long-gone characters who were its lifeblood" -- Kirkus Reviews
From the Author
By that point I wasn't just a shipmate; I was a scribbler who loved all things Roman. I hankered to write something new: a story about fathers and sons set in Ancient Rome, incorporating high-stakes suspense, engaging circumstances, romantic tension, and a splash of humor.
That was two books and a novella ago. With the Skipper as navigator and photographer, I've walked on spear-straight Roman roads, surveyed the barbarian frontier from a Danube fortress, and explored the Palatine Hill where Caesars lived and died. Reference books and museums shed light on the past, too, but places where real people worked and played, loved and fought, tend to spark my imagination most vividly. The years between now and then fade away, helping me to bring life to the characters who now inhabit the "Roma Amor" series—and to show you the world as they see it.
From the Back Cover
And how far will a son go to obey him?
37 AD: To great acclaim, 25-year-old Caligula Caesar has become Rome's new master. No one is more pleased than Senator Titus Carinna, who helped him succeed to the throne. It's a shame the Senator's older son—Caligula's closest friend—committed suicide after being charged with treason. But that still leaves Marcus, his second son.
Headstrong and hot-tempered, Marcus would rather lead legions to glory than take his brother's place. Yet when his father calls him home to befriend and steady the erratic Caligula, he has no choice.
Swept into a labyrinth of deceit, conspiracy, and betrayal reaching from Palatine mansions to the city's grimy, teeming streets, Marcus will uncover a dark secret that threatens his family, the woman he desires, even his life... and may bring chaos to the young Roman Empire.
"Combines current political concerns, the wide lens of the serious historical novel, and emotional maturity and realism with an utterly splendid grasp of what it must have been like to live in Rome under Caligula's reign."
-- Agatha winner and New York Times Notable author Sarah Smith

About the author

I work from a barn in a coastal Maine village, assisted by two cats and surrounded by Rome-related artifacts and pictures—great inspiration for ROMA AMOR, AMBER ROAD, and a third novel now in the works.
I’ve always been a writer, first on a magazine, then at an advertising agency, and eventually as owner of my own copywriting business. Over the years I've co-written seven nonfiction books, many of them with "money therapist" Olivia Mellan.
But all the while, I was working on a novel about Ancient Rome. Revising it. Rewriting it. Starting over. And so on. Until finally, ROMA AMOR: A NOVEL OF CALIGULA'S ROME emerged.
If you like stories that combine high-stakes suspense with vivid characters, extraordinary circumstances, romantic tension, and a splash of humor, why not follow me into the "Roma Amor" world? Find out more at www[dot]roma-amor[dot]com—and learn how to grab a free e-novella.
