I was casually browsing some future-tech porn on YouTube today. This happened to be in the side-bar so, whatever. Boring, but that's what 2X speed is for. Then something caught my eye...

A quick introduction to "Bad Girl" [May. 14th, 2017|05:54 am]
atomicat
I really should update her pictures but anyways, here's an old video that will show you why it's the only possible name for my rig.  Since then I've added a piano hinge to the back which swings out with both 240mm rads attached.  Now running a Corsair H110 instead of the Nepton 280L but only to compare them.  They seem about equal but I should do one more round of standardized tests.  Wasn't into swapping equipment much what with the not being able to walk and carry stuff.

Oh  who's a Bad Girl!  It's YOU isn't it!  It's YOU, yes it is!  Good girl!  So now you see why and of course she's got her own theme music, "I Wanna Bad Girl" by Screamin' Erik and the Erections.

P.S.  She'll hit 5.3 Ghz, stable, 24/7.

I'm Sorry!!! [May. 14th, 2017|04:28 am]

I'm sorry!  I ran away!  Things were getting really shitty and I knew they were only going to get worse.  Well, I'm walking again so things are much better now, right?  Walking!  Awesome!  You see, I've got osteonecrosis in my hip joints.  Or should I say, I used to have until I got hip joint replacements.  Did I say ran?  Crawled really.  Dogs thought it was great, that I'd finally gained my senses, joined the real world.  Poor kids, they'll never grasp (ha!) how nice it is to carry stuff.  Anyways, back, very sorry, I'M SORRY!  (I'm not sorry!)  Missed you all a lot.  Been very productive on Facebook though.  One thing about Facebook, the triumph of data over information... like it or not it is the world now, or representative of a huge fraction of it.  Think about it, almost two billion users.  That's more users than Asians, Africans, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, etc etc.  It is what it is, deal.  Or better yet, just use the damn thing!  Just don't let it use you.  Yeah, I gotta cut down, which is why I'm back here.  I'd rather spend my time writing something meaningful (information) than hyper-scrolling through screen after screen of data looking for a nugget of... information.  Oh, had to change my name.  It tagged "Atomic" as not being a valid first name (as if!), so Adam was as close as I could get late at night pissed off on short notice and whatever.  It's now somewhat set in stone as you'll see in a bit.  Or is it?  Anyone know how to fake out FaceShit's name crap thing whatever you bastard?

Data!  The Facebook group Mandelbulb Maniacs had about 3,000 members when I posted the first 20 seconds of an animation as a "Holy shit the artwork here is awesome and I'm really looking forwards to learning from you all." introduction to the group.  This was around last year, the first week of January and I was heading into the city for a long stay to start getting my hips sorted out.  By the time I'd really settled in, put my "Bad Girl" back together and logged on, it had a ton of shares and a ton of views.  Great, but I was embarrassed because it was an intro work clip and I hadn't had the time to dig up the link for the artist/picture/parameters that I'd used as a starting point!  Non-attribution of credit?  Nuuuu!  But when you've got a directory with tons of pictures, parameters, multiple parameter thread branches often with series names/numbers key-mashed in in the excitement of flying through these incredible worlds.... things can get a bit confused.

So where was I... Did I get to the part where someone tossed it up on the homepage of this British PsyTrance producer?  Yeah, that's when things got interesting.  It got over a million views in I dunno, two weeks?  Right now it's just over seven million.  The membership of the Maniacs group went up 50% in a week and I'm proud to say that I got my brother joined up as number 9,002.  Over 9,000!  Missed it by 1, we tried.  So welcome to the world of procedural graphics and fractal mathematics!  You're about to witness as big a transformation in graphics as the introduction of 3D rendering... really.  Dig... I've been pulling 3D objects out of the Mandelbulb3D software, which you can do in two ways.  Voxel slices, and there's now a built-in 3D mesh generator.  To get anything close to proper detail on an object you'll need a shit-load of polygons.  Here's an object I'm working on rendered in Keyshot6.  It took 4 minutes 15 seconds on 7 cores at 4.7 Ghz (Go AMD!).  The mesh was 400x3 and originally 1.4 million polygons, one round of simplification to cut that in half and a couple of rounds of smoothing, that's what you get.  Now that's just one object, can you imagine how many polygons you've got in a frame from a movie like Dr. Strange?  Yeah.  How would you like to reduce that to oh, what you could write on a napkin?  Here's the same object rendered in Mandelbulb3D, same resolution, and it took only 30 seconds.  To tell Mandelbulb3D just how to render this, the formulas plus all the lighting and shading parameters all you have to do is copy this to clipboard and paste from into the program.  That's it.  (Livejournal is going to reformat that text to hell but whatever, shoot me, you get the idea)

Now the formulas are a bit of a thing as it's all on the complex plane (at the least!) and often use a new mathematical operation called folding.  You remember in school when they taught you multiplication, long division, roots, and folding?  Me neither.  Well, when you're working with a complex plane instead of a number line... well you get the idea.  So this object is made by sort of layering three of these and dropping it into a type of iterated function.  Wow, these formulas must be really nasty stuff eh!  Yeah, really.  Here's the entire algo for the object, the entire world and all variations used to make that viral video clip.

x = X_add - abs(x)
y = Y_add - abs(y)
z = Z_add - abs(z)
rr = x*x + y*y + z*z
if rr < sqr(Min_R) then m = Scale/sqr(Min_R) else
if rr < 1 then m = Scale/rr else m = Scale
x = x * m + Cx
y = y * m + Cy
z = z * m + Cz

This is the full clip I intended to share with the group.
I hope you like Throbbing Gristle.
Just like the Mandel, do a simple operation (subtraction of the absolute value of previous value), and in this case scaling to clamp for limits, repeat.  Then there's a simple kaleidoscope mirroring but doesn't that sound trivial by now?  So, now do you think I was indulging in hyperbole earlier?  "As profound as the introduction of 3D graphics itself."  I'll stand by that statement.

So that was last year, what about this one?  Well, it started out slow but then I got a message from said music producer.... "We're on a really tight deadline for this video and need some filler.  Could we use that video clip from last year?"  "Sure!  Let me show you what this other program I've been working with can kick out, it's the bomb!"  See Mandelbulb3D currently suffers from one major drawback.... it's CPU only. Fragmentarium however, is an open-source platform for GLSL shader language and was written specifically with rendering procedural geometry.  Wanna see some core benchmarks, FX-8350 @ 4.8 Ghz vs R9-200 at stock?  Guess who wins, c'mon, just guess!  This thing will crank out a full five minutes of animation at 1080p in hours.  That's (over!) 9,000 frames.  So I got to work and was able to deliver such a video in the ridiculously short time-frame available.  Boo-Yah!  A few months later I noticed that a bunch of videos had been uploaded to his page. Ran through them and there I was, look for it at about the two-minute mark.  Nice crystal caverns eh?  I'll leave you all with a nice calm (high-def 4K!) fly-through of those crystal caverns.  Should finish this one up sometime.

*Thank you Livejournal for your "save from draft computer crash and piss-fest"!  For that alone, going to paid account.

How to Do the Doge [May. 28th, 2014|07:45 pm]
atomicat
Ok kids, here's your super-quick setup guide to get you selling artwork for Dogecoin.   The first thing you need to do is download and install a wallet which will handle your transactions.  I see that they have added a Dogecoin Light wallet.  Up to you to decide which one to use.  I would recommend the full wallet.  It will take a fair chunk of time to sync up with the network, but it's a one-time deal and will only need to incrementally update from then on.  This is what my wallet looked like a couple of weeks ago...

So what are we seeing here is my current balance, two deposits from mining pools into my wallet, and one withdraw of 1001 Doge which I have sent to the Art-4-Doge site.  Go there now, set up an account, and click on the "Wallet" icon.  You will see something like this...

The address shown there is for your wallet ON the DogLet site, in this case, "DEXwxfxbFZ4EXTdms3hYjuogcusXZV8Brh".  This is where payments for your artwork will be deposited.  You can also send Dogecoin there and use it to buy items from the site.  Now to withdraw Doge from the site and into your wallet we will have to create an address to send them to.  On your desktop wallet, the one which you've just installed, click on the "Much Receive" tab.  You will see something like this...

Here you see addresses that I have created to accept transfers from mining pools, the Reddit tip-bot, and one labeled Photos for the DogeLet site.  Create a new address if you wish or use the one already there.  Simply right-click and copy the address to clipboard and then paste it into the "Withdraw to" address on the DogeLet site.  Enter however many Dogecoin you wish to send to your desktop wallet from the site wallet and hit "send".  In a very short time, usually under a minute, you will see the funds appear in your desktop wallet.  Sending Dogecoin from your wallet to an address is just as simple.  Click on "Pls Send" on your desktop wallet and you will see a screen something like this...

If you want to send Dogecoin to somewhere, simply paste an address into the "Pay To:" field, select amount, and add a label if you wish for record-keeping.  Click send and it's off.  This now concludes our quick and dirty setup which will get you started.  As to what to do with your Dogecoin, it's up to you.  There is a great Reddit community with a growing list of vendors and sites online that are willing to accept Doge.  There are also ways to convert your Doge to Bitcoin and regular fiat currencies but we will leave that for another day.

Online storage [Aug. 14th, 2013|10:00 pm]

Well seeing as Photobucket went down the well so to speak, I've been looking for a half-decent gallery/picture stash.  Seems I opened a Flickr account ages ago when I didn't have much for bandwidth.  Well all that's changed so I dragged and dropped a few directories into it.  Enjoy, I'm tired, lots of post-processing still, backlog city.

So one more day and I'll be flying east for Iceland.  All I can say is that I'm so bloody sick of hearing about how ill-prepared I am for the weather from people who are never out in it.  For Thor's sake, my favorite time for photography is freeze-up.  That means well, FREEZE-UP!!!  5C and wet is no biggie.  I've been watching the weather over there via web-cam for weeks, checking lighting conditions, weather, atmosphere, etc.  Yeah I'm gonna get wet... and then I'm gonna get dry.  Mike has heard me go out at 5:00 am many a time, and come in at noon soaked up to the thighs, only to repeat again the next day.  Soooo, what's new here?  Location, that's all.

The Space [Jul. 16th, 2013|04:03 am]

Build build build.  As each thing is finished, it immediately gets the overflow from the next place or thing to get attention.  I think the only way I'm ever going to post pictures of this place is to, as things get finished, take a few pictures before I load it up with the stuff it's supposed to take care of.  In other words, there's always a mess around here somewhere, it just shifts about a lot.

Build!  I need some foam so I can line a small suitcase, hand-baggage size, for carrying my lenses and camera gear.  The problem is two-fold.  First, need a hard shell, non-negotiable.  Second, unfortunately, although the bag that Mike picked up for me a while ago is great, I've got some odd-sized lenses that are just a weeeee bit too odd and big to let me be comfy with it.  So, old 40's suitcase with foam and appropriate cut-outs.

Pics!  Must do pics of my Klein bottle.  When Keepsakes Gallery closed, me mum was tossed all the stuff in the coffee-room space.  Few cans of coffee, whitener, this and that, and a Klein bottle.  Yeah, I freaked.  So I've got a topologically interesting um, thing.  By the way, if you want one, I'd recommend Acme Klein bottles. There list of features is um, intriguing.

Great opportunity. [Jun. 23rd, 2013|02:17 am]

Now why would I be watching this documentary, other than the fact that I like to watch documentaries....

My brother and his wife's combined age will be about 100 this summer.
They live in Norway, but have a lot of friends in North America.
So they rented a small house for a week this summer in Iceland and invited all comers.
I've got plenty enough air-miles to get to Halifax, then it's a short jump over to Iceland.
So me mum, my other brother and moi will be going and then spending an extra week doing the drive-around.
Two weeks in Iceland with the 10-20mm, a 500mm mirror lens, and my beautiful, beautiful Tamron!
I'm gonna kill myself, but it's gonna be worth it!
