#TankaTuesday – Behind the Mask

Image from Unsplash

The challenge this week is to write syllabic poetry about what lies behind the mask. Thanks to Yvette and Colleen for the inspiration.

knives within their hearts
a perfect smile that could kill
a confident gait
a befitting mask to win,
to dazzle the admirers

***

the show continues
till you creep behind their skin
to uncover the lies
true tales tumble out soon
finally, the facade falls

Bruno Knew

Memories come crowding
When I look at this picture
It may sound perfect
Until you know why we stood there.

More than me
Bruno knew he will not return
Yet we stood there
Just looking at the water.

Too young to understand
Why ashes are immersed in water
I pulled at mom’s dress
When she emptied the urn.

The water swallowed the contents,
Even the urn.
Bruno jumped ahead
He ran  in circles to see it.

Bruno put his head on my lap
Tears trickled down as
He licked my hands and sat quietly,
Looking at his food.

For days, Bruno sat in dad’s room
I still remember the wait
Every day I thought he’ll come back
How could he leave us like that?

The Window

he waits
for his sunbath
in his precious window
the golden glow peeks through the clouds
calmly

***

crisp air,
eerie silence,
frozen wind sleeps on trees
chill whispers through the window chinks
he watches

Do you Remember? #WDYS

Do you Remember?

Do you remember
When you embraced me lovingly,
Never letting go?

Do you remember
The magic of our hugs,
The way you gripped my finger?

Do you remember
When we played with clouds,
Rolled in fall colors for hours?

Those little feet followed me
Those big eyes beckoned,
Those angelic smiles melted me.

Like lovely drops of first rain
Like moonlight soothing our eyes
Love soared with our dreams.

When did you drift away?
Was it a natural phase of teenage gale?
And I thought – you’ll realize the truth.

When were you swept away?
Weren’t you wiser than waves?
And I thought you could swim.

Who could snare you?
Who influenced your thoughts?
And I thought horizon was your goal.

I am glad you found your goal
But your definition doesn’t match mine
And I thought we were alike.

The fire within me died
When you learned to shun me
But the embers are still alive.

With tears of pride in my eyes
I am learning to live
With the monster of detachment.

New Avenues? #WDYS

New Avenues?

Solitude shared his cottage,
Filled his dark nights
with the embers that glowed
On the walls of weathered wood.

Morning rays warmed his heart
Solitude walked with him, silently;
traversing the rough terrain
Autumn leaves crunched beneath his boots.

Squirrels watched in awe
As he sat with solitude,
sharing his treasured trove
brimming with a painful past.

But snow-clad mountains,
adventurous life kept calling.
The day he decided to leave,
Solitude spoke to him in a familiar tone:

We are tethered by destiny
But I admire your resilience,
your courage to seek new avenues.
Conquering grief is the biggest battle.
