Settling in

•October 19, 2026 • Leave a Comment

Wow, we are just over half way through October already. Time flies and all that jazz. I’ve been slowly doing more around the Tiny. I have gardens taking shape, though may lose a couple of plants due to the ridiculous rain we had a couple of weekends ago. We had over 50ml in one day and over 100ml in 3 days. My poor plants were sitting in ground water which wasn’t great. It’s dry now however clay holds moisture, so we shall see how we go. I need to arrange a soil delivery to get my final beds and plants in but as usual I am procrastinating. I also got my shipping container delivered and have been making that into my shed. Next I need to get my stuff out of storage and into the shed so I can stop paying stupid storage fees.

Still very much loving living here. I was in charge of feeding the donkeys and the chickens and guinea fowl this weekend as the farm owners were away. I loved it. I didn’t know that donkeys can live from 25-40 years! They are absolute character.

My Nanna’s inheritance was distributed a few weeks ago and I have been slowly buying things for myself and paying for things like a car service, medical tests etc. It wasn’t a huge amount of money and I had to pay my Father back for the money I borrowed for my solar installation. It is nice to not have to stress about money for a little bit. I think the most life changing purchase was a couple of pairs of compression shorts. I’ve been having really big issues with my hips and lower back and these have been an absolute game changer for me pain and mobility wise. I even drove into Melbourne and back a couple of weekends ago with minimal pain. At $200 a pop they are not cheap! I was also able to buy myself a whipper snipper and lawn mower to tidy up around the Tiny. Critical for summer as we can be prone to ember attack here if there are nearby fires. Hopefully it’s not a ridiculous Summer.

Overwhelming Grief

•June 8, 2026 • Leave a Comment

I’m going through it at the moment. It kicked off with Joel’s anniversary and then having to deal with the up & coming distribution of my Nanna’s estate has tipped me over the edge. On top of that Tamika’s health has been precarious and it’s just too much.

I really do need to go and find myself a new therapist, but as usual it’s money that is the issue. Tomorrow my so called family are getting together to distribute everyone’s inheritance from Nanna’s estate. I have had no part in any of it, no communication, nothing. I’ve been effectively ostracized. I spoke to my Dad today and he remarked that I should appeal. LOL. Appeal what. I’ve been telling you for the last year that this is so unfair and you’ve shrugged. And now the day before you suddenly realise just how shitty this whole thing is. And you want me to appeal and cement myself even harder as the villian? No thanks. My sister knew what she was doing. I told him that after tomorrow I’m done with all of them, including my sister. I don’t want to hear about her, I don’t want to know about her, she no longer exists. It’s just too painful for me to deal with. I will work through it in therapy and draw a line under it all.

I’ve been crying a lot, just letting myself feel everything that comes up. It’s not easy, because I come from a family of avoidants. Even when I show emotion around Dad he immediately gets uncomfortable and tries to shut me down. I realise that I’ve never really had support from my family, apart from platitudes. It’s been an interesting realisation. It’s any wonder I’m so independent. I’m sure being AuDHD has a lot to do with it, but also I do not remember my mother or father being overtly comforting. My Nanna on the other hand, she was such a comfort to me. I had my Mum for 27 years and my Nanna was my replacement Mum for 24 years. No one seems to understand how close we were, how much of a support she was for me when I lived in Chelt. When I went through life changing surgery (twice) and she looked after my cats and made me meals and showed me more love than anyone else combined (apart from my Dad). My own sister visited me ONCE while I was in hospital. I was in and out for FIVE months and that was the best she could do. At the time I shrugged about it, now I hate her for it.

I want to live what time I have left without such negativity in my life. I’ve had such a hard time ever since Joel died really, even before that. Understanding my neurodivergence has helped a whole heap, but i’m sure I have buried a whole lot. I really just want to live a simple life, doing the job I love, keeping to myself and finding joy in the little things.

Ramblings (voice to text)

(I may or may not come back and edit this for clarity – this was an early morning stream of consciousness)

Something that’s really interesting to me that I’ve observed over the last 24 years of not having a mother is that people have lost their empathy. I don’t expect people to feel the same way that I do about losing my own mother but every year when I post my anniversary post it gets less and less interaction and that just feels strange to me. People who would once reach out via SMS or phone just do not bother anymore.

I’m certainly not looking for grand gestures, but recognition matters. Recognition that my life has actually been really hard without my mother. I struggled really hard for so long but because people perceived me as being the strong one I feel like that I never really got the support that I needed.

Another thing that I find interesting is the parallels between myself and my grandfather Harry. He was obviously a very broken man after serving in the war. And I’m not saying that I’m broken in that way at all. But he found life increasingly difficult and eventually he bought a camper van and moved into the middle of nowhere and seemingly found happiness in the last part of his life doing his own thing. And I wonder about his neurodivergence and I wonder if he ever received any empathy. Because the messaging that I received from my Nanna from my parents from my aunt and uncle’s was that he was a loser basically. He was given no understanding and compassion from what I could see. A few years ago I made an offhand comment about him and one of my uncles really tore into me about my grandpa being an alcoholic and I was surprised that my uncle who was then in his 60s still couldn’t see his own father as a fully formed human being who had complicated life experiences and no doubt had PTSD. Instead my uncle chose to still demonise my grandpa and I find that extremely sad. But it also helps me to understand the way that my family have treated me. It’s like any form of perceived weakness gets you outcast from the family. One of my other uncles was / is an alcoholic and he’s been derided all of his life by the rest of my family as well and I stop and think to myself well what was going on for him that he felt that he needed to self-medicate in this way. There genuinely doesn’t seem to be any sort of curiosity from my family around that sort of stuff which I find confronting and depressing.

I still really struggle with the way that my family have treated me and I don’t think I’m ever going to get any sort of closure around it. The hardest thing has definitely been the way that my sister has ostracised me and the fact that she stole part of my inheritance from me. I just cannot imagine treating anyone like that I just don’t have it in me to be like that and to be able to sleep at night and to be able to look people in the eye and know that I’m a decent human being. But clearly she doesn’t think that it’s a problem to steal money from her big sister who is disabled who can’t work full-time and who is overall struggling in life. But there’s nothing that I can do about that and once the money arrives, if the money ever arrives, I will go no contact with her because I don’t need someone like that in my life at all. That doesn’t bother me so much what does bother me is not having a relationship with my niece and nephew but maybe someday they’ll come to understand just how poorly their mother has treated me but I’m not holding my breath because I’ve seen the way that my family makes a pariah out of those who are different and who struggle.

I often find myself wondering what my life would look like if my mother was still alive. Because it seems like she was the glue that held the family together and kept things functional. It didn’t take long for things to start to disintegrate once she had died. I certainly don’t think she would stand for them treating me the way that they do but who knows. I don’t want to make the mistake of putting my mother on a pedestal because at times our relationship was really quite difficult and rocky. She hit me a few times we often butt heads over things but overall I feel like we had a good relationship. I wanted to how accepting she would be of my neurodivergence. Unfortunately I don’t have a good memory of my childhood but I feel like having an avoidant father who wasn’t really around much and a mother who was probably there more for other people than she was for me really did do damage to me. And the fact that like a lot of girls in my era I was raised as a people pleaser and how moving away from that as an adult and putting boundaries in place has meant that my family sees me as some sort of arsehole instead of understanding that in order for me to survive I needed to put those boundaries in place. I have been out more than once trying to be the person that does everything and after my major surgery and the subsequent shit storm that came with that I just couldn’t do that anymore physically and mentally. And I feel like my family never stops to think about how traumatizing that whole experience was for me and what it must have done to my body and my mind. Again it’s that need for people to be strong and stoic when I was anything but strong and stoic because I was literally on death store for 5 months. It still hurts that my sister only bothered to come and visit me once when I was in hospital for 5 months and even then she made sure that she had to rush and be somewhere else immediately afterwards. I feel like for a lot of my life I’ve looked at my sister and my family through rose coloured glasses and I can finally see them for who they are and they’re actually not very nice people and the compassion and understanding that they think that they give people is just not there unless you fit in their neat little box.

I’ve had a lot of these thoughts rattling around in my head now for months and I’m sitting here doing voice to text because typing it out just seems like too much work.

Tiny Tidbits

•March 14, 2026 • Leave a Comment

It has been a wild old ride, and things are not fully settled yet, but I’m in my tiny home on a 40 acre farm. It has been wonderful (and exhausting).

I lived in a caravan in my Dad’s yard for 5ish months. My Dad’s partner J had offered for me to stay, a really generous offer and it came at a time when I was feeling super vulnerable. She told me I could use the van until the end of February and utilise stuff in their house where required. The first week was great, Dad and I cooking each other dinner, going on walks together, hanging out. And then J came home from her trip away and it all fell apart. To this day I am still unsure what happened. One day things were fine and the next day I was having a door closed in my face and told ‘this is your area and this is ours and if you want to come inside you need to enter via the front door and you need to knock’. It was a big kick in the teeth and led me to a day of soul searching and sobbing whilst it poured rain outside. But I had no other options, I had to stay. I felt really unstable and scared that she would just kick me out, so I made myself as small as bloody possible. It wasn’t fun.

Things got worse over the time I was there and I came to understand that J was incredibly coercive and controlling. My Dad’s behaviour when she was around versus when she was away was chalk and cheese. It was so OBVIOUS. He put it down to a ‘clash of personalities’ but I had barely interacted with her, so how was that the case? She wouldn’t even have a conversation with me, instead she would use my Dad as her intermediary and he had to pass on her shitty messages. Which was the same controlling shit over and over. When are you moving out? You know you have to be out by the end of Feb? Why aren’t you doing this, that and the other. I ended up having to go grey rock and limit the information to my Dad as well, because it was so stressful and triggering for me. My ex husband was also coercive and abusive, so my PTSD was on high alert.

I eventually found an amazing second hand tiny to purchase and before the end of February I moved onto a 40 acre farm 90 minutes from Melbourne. There have been a lot of teething problems, some of which I am still to iron out, but we have plenty of time and those things will get done. The main thing is I am here, with my 2 little old cats and I am happy.

The day I moved in my Dad and J offered to bring some of my things over to me which was so helpful. Unfortunately what was supposed to be useful turned into bullshit when J chastised me for having a rest, telling me ‘You are not chronically ill‘.

Sure bitch, sure. It’s not like I don’t have endometriosis, ME/CFS, POTS (reconfirmed the week after I moved via a cardiology appointment), MCAS, and have had half my liver removed. No, no chronic illnesses here, just me being what, lazy I guess? After they left I rang my Dad and asked him what her damage was and he told me the single most hilarious thing I have been told – that I said to J (a few years ago) “We will never be friends”. That’s not even something that has ever come out of my mouth, nor would it. Every person I have related this story to has laughed and said that I am not the type of person to even be that way, which is the truth. Anyway, I guess coercive abusers be making up their own narrative to justify their shitty behaviours. From here on in I can happily have nothing to do with her ever again.

So I am off grid, with a huge solar set up. I’m in a paddock that is 1-1.5 acres in size and I can do anything with. It feels so good to be able to do my own thing and not have to worry about bumping into people and thinking about my health constantly. The cats have settled in well too which is amazing. Unfortunately Tamika did have a seizure during the last week, but she has bounced back and we attended the vets here and they were fabulous. The vets near Dad’s were godawful, owned by a large multinational they charged me $150 more for Tamika’s meds than literally anywhere else and they kept pushing me to get Tamika surgery. She’s 18.5 and there’s no way! The vet here listened to my lived experience of her and agreed with everything I had in place. I feel very supported by them after only one appointment.

I’ve been slowly bringing stuff out of storage as I’ve had the energy to drive back over. Yesterday I finally got my PC back and I feel like everything is good again. It was weird being without the big rig for so long!

I need to do a tip run and get rid of SO much rubbish – mostly cardboard boxes and packing shit. We don’t have a mail delivery or rubbish service to the property because we are rural, so I will be utilising the tip a lot.

Gosh, the closer it gets to moving day the less capable I feel about actually achieving this. I woke up this morning and felt okay. I had breakfast, watched a couple of vlogs and then crashed. Fun times. So I had a sleep for an hour and restarted my day.

It is also super warm – I think around 25 degrees, tomorrow is meant to be 28. I miss the years where we would ease into Summer. I feel like we go from Winter to Summer in the space of a few weeks and we miss all of the mild Spring days.

I’m feeling very alone in the world right now, with no one to help me move. Dad is overseas until 2 days before I move, so I can’t call on him. And the rest of my family are a bunch of twats (except one of my cousins). Friends are either disabled, interstate or overseas. So yeah, this move feels very different to past ones.

I’ve booked an Airbnb for a week over the move, so that I can have the cats out and have a base near here, but also coz I am going to live with Dad and as I said earlier, he’s overseas and therefore will be a big health risk to me for a bit. So this seems like the best option, albeit a fkn expensive one. Airbnb’s are ridiculously expensive. It really is criminal, especially with the housing crisis we are in.

Until the removalists come and take my belongings to storage. It should be fine, however my body and brain are taking a battering. I’m constantly exhausted and cannot hold a thought in my noggin.

I’ve booked an airbnb for the first homeless stint of a week, and then I am moving in with dad, which is going to be interesting. At some point they will get the fence done and I can live in their fancy caravan.

Finding someone to build my tiny has been difficult as I still don’t know what my budget is, so I am just letting it be for the moment. There are also a number of really nice tinys on the second hand market, so I am keeping an eye on them. I am not averse to buying one second hand at all.

Fingers crossed it all continues to fall into place. I am doing this on my own, Dad is overseas and well the rest of my family are cunts. So there’s that.

End of an Era

I have sold my little apartment in the burbs! The cooling off period ends on Wednesday at midnight, so fingers crossed, but all the paperwork has been signed, all that needs to happen now is for the SOLD sticker to go on the board.

I am excited for my move, though I will be homeless for a bit as I don’t know where I am moving to just yet. I am having a tiny home built, but I am funding that from the sale of my apartment + a small loan, and obviously I cannot proceed with any of that until I have the funds. Which will be the end of October. It seems a long way away now, but given how fast the rest of the year has flown, I know it will zoom by. There are a lot of moving parts that I need to co-ordinate, and already I am having sleepless nights worrying about it all.

I am feeling very sentimental for here, I’ve been living here for 10 years now and boy has that flown by. I’m not worried I’ve made a wrong decision, more that restarting somewhere else is a lot, and I’m old and autistic aka, stuck in my ways. Thankfully my ADHD urge for chaos rules at times, or I would get nothing done.

It’s hard to believe we are in September and the start of Spring already. Winter seemed long and dry. We had a lot of cold weather but not much rain. I really hope we don’t have a stinking hot Summer.

Reflections of an Isolated Human

It’s funny (actually not really) how life can be motoring along and then something happens that flips everything on its head. We all endured that during the lockdown part of the current pandemic. You know, the one that’s not over, that big business decided was over and told everyone to stop caring about vulnerable folk. Of course that’s intentional, and if you wanna know more on that, this video essay speaks to that.

My life wasn’t perfect prior to covid. I was fast discovering I was in a highly abusive marriage and this was causing my physical and mental health to crash. My memories of that time are very hazy, probably for good reason. I had also contracted a really bad bout of the flu in 2017, which led to me getting ME/CFS. I would guess that it was a cumulation of everything my poor body had endured back in 2010/2011, but that infection, and the start of perimenopause, kicked off a decline in my health.

My marriage came to a screeching halt back in 2020. I was still working for a big counselling organisation, but I was coming to the end of my time with them as it was becoming increasingly toxic. I went to my first day back after the Xmas hols and when I got home I realised my husband was not home. I rang to see where he was and he had been out scoring the drug of his choice. He had been abusing drugs for months, maybe even well over a year by this point, going through his savings, not working. Everything was on my shoulders. He eventually arrived home and immediately started using again. Something inside of me snapped, and I told him to pack his shit up and leave. He was downstairs at this point, and I turned around to walk up the stairs and that’s when he attacked me. He smashed my head into the wall and I dropped to the ground, curling up into a ball to protect myself, as he rained punches and kicks into me. Then just like that he was gone.

This wasn’t the first time he had physically assaulted me, many times previously he had strangled me until I almost passed out, punched me, threw things, screamed at me. One time he even kicked me in the back of the head. This time I rang a friend who rushed over and together we rang the police. What followed was a stand off for 2 hours, with my ex locking himself inside and police negotiating with him. Eventually he came out and he was tazed, arrested and taken to hospital. The police took an IVO out on my behalf and he was forbidden from seeing me for 2 years. However this was not realistic as we had had a life together that we now needed to untangle. He did assault me a couple of times after this, but I just wanted to extract myself as safely as possible. I honestly believed he would kill me.

All of this was happening whilst covid was raging. We had endured lockdowns and I realised how much my life shrunk in the space of no time at all. I am immunocompromised and cannot get vaccinated for anything, so for me, masking is imperative.

I lost the friend who I had called on that fateful day, her telling me it was all too much and she couldn’t help me anymore. I was confused because I hadn’t called on her for much prior til then. In fact her and my ex husband had staged an ‘intervention’ one year and had traumatised the hell out of me which led to me wanting to not be here anymore. I honestly hope some day she realises how fucked up that was. But I guess like me, she didn’t realise she was dealing with a possible covert narcissist and she believed his bullshit.

Next to go was my entire family. I had spent a Christmas with my family, outside. I had requested they all test before we attended and to be mindful of any exposure. My Nanna turned up and we sat next to each other the entire day. At the end of the day she told me she had been a close contact of someone a few days prior and I was internally furious. I left and went home, messaging my family group chat the next day, expressing my frustration and disappointment that no one had said anything and that I had been put at risk.

My family, instead of saying oops we fucked up, ostracized me, and apart from my Father, not one of them have spoken to me since. The family I thought was welcoming and chill were the complete opposite. I’ve since realised that my people pleasing tendencies were taken great advantage of by my family, and now that I was no longer useful, I had no part in our family. It’s taken me years to wrap my head around and the grief has been immense. Even now, as I think about it, tears well up, scratch that surface and there’s a world of anger and sadness just underneath. My family used tone policing and told me my message to the group was unacceptable. The only person who stood up for me was my cousin who lives overseas and who is also covid cautious. She has also been ostracized from the family too.

My friends, well they all got sick of me talking about covid, and apparently taking precautions to be around me is too much, and most of them have vanished too. I’ve realised how performative most people are around things like this. The minute someone has to make an effort, has to change the way they operate in any slight way, it’s too much and we don’t speak of it again.

Thankfully I was able to pivot to working from home and I expanded my business, which keeps me with a roof over my head and food in my and the cats bellies. But I’m existing, not living. I have endured so very much and it feels like I’ve done a lot of it alone. Without my family, without my friends, without my support networks.

Why am I writing this? I don’t know, I woke up this morning and it was burning a hole in my chest so I had to put it all down. So that one day after I’m gone, my words, my story are here. I’ve endured so much in this life time, and some days I do not know how I am still here. Out of spite I would say, but it’s not really that. I need for things to change. I need to move away from people, so I don’t have to mask when I open my front door. I want to sell my apartment and move into a tiny home, on a bush block. I want to be amongst nature, going back to my roots. Living in synchronicity with the land. I hope some day I can make it happen, before I rot, before I catch a covid infection that kills me.

Happy 50th

•April 15, 2025 • Leave a Comment

It’s weird when your birthday numbers get big and your brain doesn’t feel quite that old. The body is another story however. I think my body is about 80 years old.

I’ve got a full day of work today however I’ve taken Thursday off to have a long weekend. I’m not really doing anything to mark the passage of time, my partying days are well over now. I’m eating my toasted fruit muffins for breakfast and pondering how I got here.
