How to upgrade IOS image on a cisco switch orCisco router? Since you’ll be upgrading the IOS image, make sure you have physical access to the switch and you are in front of it. Use a console cable to connect to the switch.

Please note that the steps given below will be similar to both switches and routers. However this example shows how to upgrade IOS image on a cisco catalyst switch.

1. Verify Current IOS Version

After you login, go to enable mode, by entering the enable password. This example uses two cisco catalyst 3750 switches configured in stack mode as shown below. So, while upgrading you should upgrade the image on both the flash cards.

# show switch

Switch/Stack Mac Address : 0012.abcd.1234

H/W Current

Switch# Role Mac Address Priority Version State

----------------------------------------------------------

*1 Master 0012.abcd.1234 10 0 Ready

2 Member 0012.abcd.2345 1 0 Ready

If you have only one cisco catalyst switch (non stack mode), follow all the steps mentioned in this document, but you’ll be doing it only on one flash card.

First, verify the content of the flash cards, using “dir flash1:” command.

# dir flash1:

c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-35.SE5.bin

# dir flash2:

c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-35.SE5.bin

As you see above, both the flash cards contains the current IOS image file, which is version “122.35.SE5?

Verify what version of IOS image your switch is currently running. Most likely this will be same as the current IOS image file that you see in your flash card. As you see below, it is using “12.3(35)SE5?

# showver

Switch Ports Model SW Version SW Image

------ ----- ----- ---------- ----------

* 1 24 WS-C3750G-24T 12.2(35)SE5 C3750-IPBASEK9-M

2 24 WS-C3750G-24T 12.2(35)SE5 C3750-IPBASEK9-M

2. Download Latest IOS Image from Cisco Website

Download the latest IOS image for your cisco website
Go to cisco.com -> IOS Software -> Select your Siwtch (for example: Cisco Catalyst Switch 3750G-24T) -> Click on “Download IP BASE” -> Select the latest version that you want to download (for example: 12-2.55.SE1).

While you are on this download page, copy/paste the MD5 given to your system. After we download the IOS image and move it to the switch, we’ll verify the MD5 checksum before installing the image.

3. Delete Old IOS Software Image from Flash

Since we’ll be downloading the new ISO image and moving it to the flash card, we need some space. So, delete the current old image from the flash card.

# delete /f /r flash1:c3750-ipbase-mz.122.35-35.SE5

# delete /f /r flash2:c3750-ipbase-mz.122-35.SE5

# dir flash1:

# dir flash2:

In the above delete command, /f stands for force, and /r stands for recurssive.

On a side note, you should be using some software to monitor your switch status. If you are not doing itinstall Nagios, and monitor your switches.(How to Monitor Network Switch and Ports Using Nagios)

4. Copy the IOS image to Cisco Switch

To transfer the IOS image from your laptop to Cisco Switch, you should run a TFTPserver on your laptop (or on the system where you’ve downloaded the IOS image).

If you are running a TFTPserver on your laptop, and connected to the switch using a console cable, assign aip-address to your laptop, and put your laptop on the same network as the switch.

Copy the ISO image to the flash as shown below using the “copy command”. This will ask you to enter the address of the remote host (which is your laptop in this case), and the source filename that needs to be transferred (which is the ISO image you downloaded from cisco website).

# copytftp flash1

>Address or name of remote host? 192.168.1.10

>source filename?c3750-ipbasek9-mz-122-55.SE1.bin

>Destination filename? c3750-ipbasek9-mz-122-55.SE1.bin

Once you’ve copied it, make sure the file is there on the flash card.

# dir flash1:

c3750-ipbasek9-mz-122-55.SE1.bin

Just to make sure nothing went wrong during the copy, do a MD5 check-sum on this, and compare with the MD5 that you noted down from cisco website while downloading the IOS image. To create MD5 checksum of a file inCisco catalyst switch, use the “verify” command as shown below.

# verify /md5 flash1:c3750-ipbasek9-mz-122-55.SE1.bin

If you are running two switches in stack configuration, do the same on the second flash card.

# copytftp flash2:

# dir flash2:

# verify /md5 flash2:c3750-ipbasek9-mz-122-55.SE1.bin

5. Modify Switch Boot path-list

Now it is time to tell switch cisco to use the new ISO image to boot from. Before changing the boot information, verify the current configuration, and change it using the “boot system” command as shown below.

# show boot

# config t

# boot system switch all flash:c3750-ipbasek9-mz-122-55.SE1.bin

6. Save Config and Restart the Switch

Verify the current boot information, save the current configuration, and reboot the cisco switch as shown below.

# show boot

# writemem

# reload

7. Final Verification after IOS Upgrade

Finally verify the current IOS version of the switch, after the upgrade, it should display the new version as shown below.

# showver

Switch Ports Model SW Version SW Image

------ ----- ----- ---------- ----------

* 1 24 WS-C3750G-24T 12.2(55)SE1 C3750-IPBASEK9-M

2 24 WS-C3750G-24T 12.2(55)SE1 C3750-IPBASEK9-M

Make sure to verify your interface and vlan status, to make sure everything is running properly without any issues.

How to Configure CISCO Router Password?

Publié le 28/06/2012 à 08:37 par ciscorouter Tags : blog mode you cisco

Passwords are used to restrict access to a CISCO router. Passwords can be given to the virtual terminal lines and the console line. Moreover, password can be set privileged EXEC mode. This page will provide the information to set upCISCO router password to virtual terminal lines, console lines and privileged mode. Even more, you will learn how to encrypt the password also.

Why console password is required?

Console password is useful on a network on which multiple people have to access to the router. The persons who are not authorized, can't access the router. Thus it prevents unauthorized person from accessing the router.

Configuring console password of aCISCO routers:

  1. Enter global configuration mode of the CISCO router.
  2. Put the command line console 0 to the router.
  3. Provide the password by using password command. For example, if you want to put password "cisco" then the command will be password cisco products.
  4. At last, put the command login.

Commands for configuring console password

Router>enable

Router#config t

Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.

Router(config)#line console 0

Router(config-line)#password cisco

Router(config-line)#login

Router(config-line)#

Why virtual terminal password is required?

Virtual terminal password refers to telnet password. Through telnet, you can access the router and can change anything. So, it's really important to protect the use of telnet by giving a strong password.

Configuring virtual terminal password of a CISCO router:

Different hardware has different no of vty lines defined.Cisco has the range 0 to 4 vty lines. It means it has 5 vty lines. You can set the password of vty lines by the following steps:

  1. Enter global configuration mode of the CISCO router.
  2. Put the command line vty 0 4 to the router.
  3. Provide the password by using password command. For example, if you want to put password "cisco" then the command will be password cisco.
  4. At last, put the command login.

Commands for configuring virtual terminal password

Router>enable

Router#configure terminal

Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z.

Router(config)#line vty 0 4

Router(config-line)#password cisco

Router(config-line)#login

Router(config-line)#

Why enable password is required?

Enable password is required to restrict the access of privileged EXEC mode.

Configuring enable password of a CISCO router:

From the global configuration mode, use the command enable password to restrict access to privileged EXEC mode. However, this password is visible in the routers configuration file. To encrypt the password, enable secret command is required. By using enable secret command the password is encrypted and can't be readable to a human.

Commands for configuring enable password

Enable password:

Router>enable

Router#config

Router#configure terminal

Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.

Router(config)#enable password cisco

Router(config)#

Perform password encryption:

Router>enable

Router#config

Router#configure terminal

Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.

Router(config)#enable secret cisco product

Router(config)#

How to encrypt all the CISCO router password?

By default all the passwords of a CISCO router is readable in clear text in the configuration file. This is a great security threat if someone read it and configure or change the router configuration. So, to protect form display the password, service password-encryption command is used to encrypt the passwords. Service password-encryptionis a global command and encrypt the passwords:

  • enable password
  • console password
  • vty password
  • aux password

By following the above steps you can easily configure CISCO router passwords.

Hardware Firewall&Software Firewall

Publié le 20/04/2012 à 11:14 par ciscorouter Tags : cisco firewall cisco software

Cisco firewalls come in two basic types: hardware based and software based. Both types of firewalls are important and play a major role in the security of computers and networks. The firewall is the first line of defense. It can be equated to U.S. Marines who guard the gates of U.S. embassies worldwide. None enters until an identity check has taken place. Firewalls act in the same manner, based on the security rules protecting the computer from cyber-criminals.

Firewall Functions

Hardware- and software-based firewalls perform the same basic function: to keep unauthorized visitors from accessing the computer or network. Firewalls are not created equal, and an inexpensive hardware-based or free software-based firewall can give the computer owner a false sense of security and allow unauthorized traffic to go undetected. Since the firewall is the first line of defense against cyber-crime activity, you should do extensive research to find the firewall that works best for your individual needs.

Hardware Firewalls

A hardware-based firewall hardware may be a small appliance with several Ethernet ports, or built into a network router. The firewall is connected between the modem and the network, filtering all traffic, coming and going. It filters incoming traffic to protect against intruders, and filters outgoing traffic to make sure that if a piece of malicious code did make it through, it cannot connect back to the mother server without specific permission. For home networks, it is always best to purchase a router with a built-in firewall.

Software Firewalls

Software-based firewalls provide a level of protection intended to keep cyber-criminal and Botnets from gaining unauthorized access to individual computers. In addition, cisco software-based firewalls block malicious code from contacting out to the mother server. Although it is common for the average computer user to download free firewalls, it is a best practice to find an enterprise-grade firewall that allows custom filtering rules that are best suited for the individual user's specific needs.

Computer Security Best Practices

It is common practice for individual computer users to use the bundled security software available on their new computers, or worse yet to rely only on the Windows Defender solution which comes with all new Microsoft Windows installs. However, this is the worst security solution available. Professional cyber-criminals use reverse-engineering techniques to find security flaws in these security solutions and breach the security virtually undetected. It is a best practice to use two or three security vendors to create a security solution, which includes a firewall as well as antivirus and anti-spyware software.

Expert Advice

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to firewalls or computer security. Each computer user stores different types of files and surfs the Internet in different ways, so research each part of your security solution to find what is best for your individual needs. It is also wise to purchase a new high-end network router every 24 to 36 months, so you will have the newest firewall technology protecting your network from unauthorized intrusion.

How to Configure A Cisco Switch?

Publié le 26/03/2012 à 11:50 par ciscorouter Tags : mode cisco 2960

When executing an inter-network installation, many mechanisms and components are usually involved. Cisco WS-C2960S-24PD-L is superior because it is the only inter-networking company with a well made end to end inter-networking solution. Cisco switches makes the LAN more competent by creating multiple collision domains. Each switch port is a split collision domain. With only one device connected per port, collisions are not probable and communications are more efficient. Cisco switches are very capable because they perform packet filtering and forwarding in hardware as opposed to software. Cisco switches increase the speed of work.

Guide: Cisco Switch Configuration

A new Cisco switch is not configured by default. Users have to configure the switch with the configuration dialogue in setup mode. After the basic switch configuration is performed in setup mode, the user can verify, modify, and delete the switch’s configuration settings in different configuration modes with the Cisco IOS command line interface. Cisco IOS’s two primary modes are user exec mode and privileged exec mode along with configuration modes such as global configuration mode, interface configuration mode, and line configuration mode with distinctive prompts. Each mode has specific commands to perform specific tasks. The user exec mode is the limited examination mode, while the privileged exec mode is the detailed examination and the prerequisite for all other configuration modes. Global configuration mode is the mode for the switch’s  global settings, while the interface configuration mode and line configuration mode configure the specific interface or line. Cisco IOS commands in the different Cisco switch series vary. Nowadays, the most popular Cisco switch series are the Cisco Catalyst WS-C2960S-48TD-Lseries switch, Cisco 2960 series switch, and Cisco 3548 series switch.cisco switch configuration Cisco Switch Configuration

Cisco Branch Routers, Accelerate Your WAN Performance

Publié le 17/02/2012 à 10:43 par ciscorouter Tags : cisco router

cisco routers used, designed to address increasingly distributed and collaborative workforces, is the cornerstone of a new Cisco architecture called Borderless Network.Borderless Network is intended to support applications, processing cycles and services that are increasingly distributed and virtualized, such as those in cloud computing and software-as-a-service environments. Some analysts say it is more than another Cisco "marketecture," though.

"Application and device borders are eroding," says Rob Whiteley of Forrester Research. "This is not like SONA (Cisco's Services Oriented Network Architecture) where it was very hard to point to things to implement. SONA was more of a marketecture, more of a religion that you adopted. It was trying to convince you of value, whereas (Borderless Networks) has value."

Cisco branch routers(ISR G2 routers) -- the 1900, 2900 and 3900 series -- include new video digital signal processors key to delivering what Cisco calls "medianet" capabilities for TelePresence, surveillance, collaboration and digital signage.

Other medinet-enabled enhancements of used router branch routers include a video-ready media engine, scalable audio-conferencing, up to 1Terabyte of video storage per module, a multigigabit switching fabric for high performance, and WAN optimization and application acceleration.

The Cisco branch routers' service-ready engine lets users dynamically deploy remote, virtualized services in branches without on-site support or network downtime. The ISR G2 services module includes up to 1 Terabyte of on-board storage for these virtualized services.

Cisco branch routers support Cisco IOS Release 15, the most recent version of the company's routing software, which features enhanced security, voice support and manageability, and license-based activation for faster deployment of services.

Cisco is also introducing a fixed-configuration version of its ASR 1000 edge router. The ASR 1002-F is designed for small-scale WAN aggregation, private WAN and Internet edge applications. It features four integral Gigabit Ethernet ports and 4 Gigabytes of memory.

The Cisco 3900, Cisco 2900 and Cisco 1900 will eventually succeed the first generation Cisco ISR 3800, 2800 and 1800 platforms. Ninety percent of the interface modules can be carried forward to the new routers, and Cisco believes the transition period to the ISR G2 line will take two years or more.

Cisco Branch Router Buyer's Guide

Buyer's Guide: How to Select Cisco Branch Routers

Enhanced security, VoIP and video optimization and other features have made the branch router anything but a generic purchase these days. Here's a look at Cisco's proudest products.

Cisco Systems is very much king of the hill in the branch router marketplace. It has an 87 percent share of a $2.8 billion (2010) market, according to Shin Umeda, an analyst with Dell'Oro Group. When it comes to connecting to the network locally for voice, data or both, or acting as a gateway to the WAN for transmissions to and from headquarters, few CIOs look further than Cisco.

While the primary functions of the Cisco routers remain, the company has steadily been adding features such as enhanced security, LAN switching, WAN optimization and acceleration and Quality of Service (QoS). This has given rise to the all-in-one router.

"It may still be called a branch router, but it has become an all-purpose networking device," said Umeda.

Cisco's Market Take

In recent years, Cisco has been responding to trends such as the explosion of mobile devices in the workplace, the rapid adoption of cloud services and virtualization, and increasing use of video and collaboration applications, said InbarLasser-Raab, senior director of borderless networks at Cisco.

These trends have impacted branch routers in several ways. For example, Lasser-Raab said, there is a greater need for consistent quality of application experience as services tend to use more WAN bandwidth due to the fact that video streaming and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) have gone mainstream. Embedded security and reliability are also being demanded from branch routers, she said.

"Internet access in the branch for cloud services requires internal and external threat protection, as well as backup and survivability capabilities in case that WAN link drops," explained Lasser-Raab.

To reduce operating costs, she said, there has been a strong tendency toward consolidation of infrastructure, optimized services delivery and bandwidth optimization -- hence more all-in-one products. Consistency, too, has risen high on the priority list. Large organizations are demanding common capabilities across all branch offices to ensure they provide the same level of security, optimization and support through centralized policy and consistent set of services.

"Organization-wide visibility and control is now widely available through centralized management and troubleshooting of branch routers," said Lasser-Raab. "This is even more important these days due to limited local staff as well as support, planning and scaling for unexpected requirements."

Branch Router Selection

Cisco offers too many branch products to cover each of them in detail. They can be viewedhere.

Lasser-Raab calls attention, in particular, to the Integrated Services Router Generation 2 (ISR G2), which she said "delivers a new borderless workspace experience through service virtualization, video-ready capabilities, and operational excellence."

ISR G2s are part of the Cisco Borderless Network Architecture that is described as enabling business innovation and growth across remote sites. "This architecture delivers a new workspace experience by meeting the performance requirements for the next generation of WAN and network services, enabling the cost-effective delivery of high-definition collaboration at the branch office and providing the secure transition to the cloud and virtualized network services," said Lasser-Raab. "Designed for service delivery on a single platform, ISR G2 routers help businesses deploy services on demand or using a pay-as-you-grow model as needs dictate."

On the security front, the used cisco router provide integrated virtual private network (VPN), firewall, inline intrusion prevention services (IPS), content filtering and cloud-based Web security services. Application and WAN optimization is included via software (plus some hardware acceleration). Monitoring and performance-based routing capabilities are built in.

For access flexibility, wired and wireless services including integrated WLAN (802.11n) and either 3G or 4G wireless can be accommodated. In keeping with the video-aware theme, Cisco has added embedded media capabilities to provide video optimization, troubleshooting visibility and control, as well as integrated video/voice applications. Further, ISR G2 routers can host any application for localized server capabilities and backup.

"The ISR G2 provides the widest set of integrated services in the industry: security, collaboration applications, Wireless LAN and WAN, WAN/Application optimization, video awareness, backup and reliability, local application hosting and more," boasted Lasser-Raab. "They come with integrated management for wired and wireless including video and policy."

List prices for this router series start at $1,195.

Here are a few examples of ISR models:

The Cisco 3900 Series Integrated Services Router provides interactive media services, TelePresence, a field-upgradeable motherboard and 350Mbps circuit-speed WAN performance in a 3 RU modular form factor. It is aimed at high-end deployments requiring business continuity and collaboration.

The Cisco 2900 Series Integrated Services Router is also good for interactive media services as well as virtualization. It comes in a 1 or 2 RU form factor and provides WAN performance up to 75Mbps. It is more of a mid-range product.

The Cisco 1900 Series Integrated Services Router is an entry-level version which offers security along with performance of up to 25Mbps in a desktop form factor. Small offices would tend to use this one.

GBIC Modules,Key Features, Main Functions and Types

Publié le 28/12/2011 à 10:39 par ciscorouter Tags : cisco modules
GBIC (gigabit interface converter)is a transceiver that converts between electrical and optical signals for high-speed networking.cisco sfp the transmit and receive functions needed to convert between serial-electrical and serial-optical signals, simplifying switch and hub design. The industry-driven cisco gbic specification defines a common form factor and electrical interface. This pluggable transceiver module lets system builders and net executives configure, incrementally populate and cost-effectively reconfigure fiber links as required. Initially targeted to support Fibre Channel data networks, the GBIC standard was quickly adapted for use with Gigabit Ethernet installations, as well. By providing hot-swap interchangeability, GBIC modules give net administrators the ability to tailor transceiver costs, link distances and configure overall network topologies to their requirements. GBIC support also leaves the door open for changing the network without the wholesale replacement of system-level boards. The use of GBIC transceiver modules reduces overall system deployment and inventory costs because a single form factor can be used for all transceivers. Network executives are not forced to buy fully populated switching equipment. They can purchase GBIC modules to configure their system incrementally, and the service/maintenance functions can be mixed and matched on the optical transceiver components on an as-needed basis. Function A GBIC module acts as a transceiver that turns electric currents into optical signals, before changing those optical signals into digital electric currents, as stated by searchcio-midmarket.com. The process was created to simplify switch and hub design. Each GBIC module is in place for making system administration of electro-optical communication networks easier. These modules plug directly into a system. They were first designed to support Fibre Channel data networks but are also used with Gigabit Ethernet setups. This device made it possible for users to avoid buying fully populated switching equipment. Transfer Speed Data transfer rates vary on GBIC module model specifications, but they have a minimum of 1 gigabit per second. Manufacturers, such as Cisco, make GBIC modules with varying transfer speeds. Uses A GBIC module allows a user to reconfigure fiber links, configure tailor receiver costs, link networking distances and organize network topologies based on set requirements. Used on a fiber optic or an Ethernet system, GBIC modules can be upgraded, swapped out or plugged in without turning off the computer. This flexibility eliminates the need to replace entire system networking boards. More Related: Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) Module and Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) GBIC Module Install.
