For those who celebrate, Happy Halloween! This beloved holiday is part of the All Hallows’ Eve Triduum. Today is All Hallows’ Eve. Sunday marks All Saints’ Day, and Monday commemorates All Souls’ Day/ Day of the Dead. Although Halloween bears clear pagan roots, the Christian influence cannot be ignored. On the secular side, it’s just a fun, let-it-all-hang-out holiday.
I’m pleased to share that my poem, “Wind Woman,” was published today at Chewers & Masticadores. Thank you, Nolcha Fox, for publishing it on Halloween! Nolcha is a gifted poet with a long list of published poems and poetry collections. Visit her websites to learn more.
Autumn leaves swirl around my feet, Colorful reminders of dreams left broken And stories untold. Wind Woman speaks to me, Gently blows in my ear a quiet melody. “Get up,” she coos, “and embrace the world Of your imagination…

Humorous haiku and delightful photos make these fun Halloween reads. I enjoyed them very much. I gave the first book 4 stars because of formatting issues in the Kindle version, but all three books deserve five stars for their cleverness and holiday playfulness.
My neighbor’s dog had puppies, and I agreed to take the runt. He brought her over on Sunday afternoon, and our nice, quiet, peaceful life has been chaotic ever since! We named her Daisy, and she’s a sweet, energetic, lovable nine-week-old pup. It’s been a long time since we raised a puppy. I forgot how much time and effort go into potty training, learning to walk on a leash, and riding in the car. My neighbor kept her outside with her mom and siblings. An owl tried to snatch her from his yard, so she has healed sores on her head. I’m horrified that she almost became owl food. I can’t even imagine how frightening it must have been!
Thank you for visiting me and my humble world. Have a super fantastic day!

Good morning!
This adorable short video resulted from an error I made. While writing the prompts for a Thanksgiving video, I accidentally wrote “Happy Halloween” instead of “Happy Thanksgiving.” Gemini AI did what I asked and generated a cute, cozy, plump turkey in a Halloween costume. I loved the image so much that I went with it. I hope you like it as much as I do.

The Séance Reviews
Thank you, Denise, for your wonderful 5-star review!
“The Séance is a fantastic short read, and the cemetery setting feels like a character in its own right, with lush descriptions. Lila makes the trek to her husband’s grave each Halloween, his birthday, hoping to hear from him, as promised. I couldn’t help but sympathize with Lila and her determination to contact her husband from the beyond. I won’t give away how it ended, but I love that this was based on Harry Houdini and his promise to his wife. A well-written short story to curl up and read on a cool fall or winter night, and perfect for the Halloween season. I can highly recommend this!”
Denise’s new Christmas book will be available on November 1st, but you can preorder it now. Thanks!

Halloween is only 10 days away now, and my short story, The Séance, fits right in with the celebrations. I wrote this manuscript in 2009 and shoved it in a drawer until Spillwords Press published it as a Featured Story on October 27, 2023. The story is based on true events that occurred after illusionist Harry Houdini’s death.

“A grieving widow. An unfulfilled promise. An annual birthday ritual to bring back the dead. Is ten years too long to wait?
“Lila is tired of waiting for her husband to contact her from beyond the grave. But she dutifully performs her annual ritual, hoping that this year will be different. After all, he promised to contact her if he could. She hires a well-known psychic with an impeccable reputation to conduct one last séance on Halloween night. Will this be the night she has longed for? Based on true events in the aftermath of Harry Houdini’s death.”

Halloween Treat Reviews
Thank you, Denise, Balroop, and Sue, for these five- and 4-star reviews!
“Tommy passes by an old house and is curious. He asks his grandfather about it and learns a few new things. While trick-or-treating with his friend, he gets a surprise involving this house. Although this is a short story, the setting is lush and vivid, and I can easily imagine the old house. There are a few twists I didn’t see coming. It’s a perfect read for the Halloween season, or anytime you want something short and entertaining with a touch of horror and scares. I can easily recommend this!”
“Halloween Treat builds an aura that is fascinating and mysterious, transporting us to the most feared house in Tommy James’ neighborhood. He noticed the most interesting detail about the house: that the two arched windows smiled at him with a good-morning kind of smile. He was enchanted by the green paint and the frilly white curtains, but the tall iron fence quelled his curiosity.
“Pisturino’s vivid descriptions lend a distinct character to the Van Emmerick house, with each window and Victorian ornamentation adding a spooky charm to it. Tommy’s grandfather shares his own stories about the house and the mystery deepens.
“This short story may have a little element of horror, but it is more valuable due to Pisturino’s rich, incisive style and her ability to deliver a nail-biting finish. Really an enjoyable tale.”
“The Punishment is a sharply constructed piece of horror microfiction that makes excellent use of its limited space. I am familiar with Dawn Pisturino’s work and this new direction she took was exciting. The story establishes mischief and tension immediately then shifts into the supernatural as Tommy is dragged into the Pomeroy house and toward an unexpected punishment. The writing is vivid and atmospheric, particularly in descriptions such as the house that “shuddered, sighed, and groaned” while the short sentences and escalating action give the piece a strong sense of urgency. The contrast between Tommy’s innocence and the brutal fate awaiting him creates an effective twist, although the final image deliberately leaves the reader with questions about why he is punished for another boy’s actions. Overall, it is a concise unsettling story with a satisfying horror-microfiction punch. The sound effects in the author’s story illustration studio were a nice touch.”

Traveling to Galveston Island, Texas, in October was the right choice. The temperature stayed in the 70s and 80s wth tolerable humidity. We got a little rain, but the skies were mostly sunny.
Haunted Galveston
So many people have died on and near Galveston Island that it has been nicknamed “a cemetery with a beach.” Nine yellow fever plagues wiped out hundreds of people. The biggest natural disaster in U.S. history occurred on September 8, 1900, when a Category 4 hurricane pummeled the island, killing between 6,000 and 12,000 people and leaving 10,000 residents homeless. The island is beautiful, but a sense of sadness overshadows its peaceful ambiance. Once glorious Victorians stand weather-beaten and boarded up, a testament to the island’s stormy past. One old house, in particular, looks spooky and haunted with its faded purple paint and dark aura of total abandonment. Other historic homes have been carefully preserved and demand attention from locals and tourists alike. It’s easy to believe Galveston Island is haunted, and October celebrations only reinforce that belief.
Photo Top Left – the Robert Durst Residence
Disguised as a mute woman named Dorothy Ciner, New York real estate heir Robert Durst rented an apartment in this blue four-plex after running from the police. He was the primary suspect in the disappearance of his wife in 1982, tried for the murder of his Galveston neighbor, Morris Black, in 2003, and confessed to the 2000 murder of his friend, Susan Berman. He died in prison in 2022. The residence is a popular tourist site. It’s no coincidence that the house is painted “haint blue.” People across the South believe this shade of blue protects against “haints” and evil spirits.
Photo Top Right –The Witchery
This occult store in historic downtown Galveston is the perfect place to hunt for books, gemstones, arts and crafts, and other Halloween miscellany. I bought a book titled Spirits & Seers & Séances: Victorian Spiritualism, Magic & The Supernatural by Steele Alexandra Douris, which I found fascinating. A lot of our ideas and attitudes about spiritualism originated with the Victorians in England and America. The island apparently has its own witches’ coven that gathers on the beach under each full moon to celebrate moonlore and healing. Locals and tourists show up to watch the ceremonies. Not everyone is thrilled to have a witches’ coven on the island, however.
Photo Bottom Left –Port of Galveston Harbor
We took a Haunted Harbor boat ride one night and learned a lot about the harbor’s history and the ghost tales associated with it. Many people don’t know that the pirate Jean Lafitte founded a colony on Galveston Island in 1817 and became wealthy smuggling goods and spying for the Spanish. Later, in 1892, nearby Pelican Island became a quarantine center for sick immigrants. Sea Wolf Park is home to a coyote-red wolf hybrid called the “ghost wolf” that roams freely on the island and throughout Galveston. Originally thought to be the infamous, legendary chupacabra, DNA revealed its true origins. We saw a lot of people fishing, but no ghost wolves. The harbor also has a rich naval history and serves as a major cruise ship port. The Carnival cruise ship Jubilee was docked in port, and it looked huge! It is, in fact, larger than the doomed ship Titanic. A roller coaster on top of the ship made me nervous just looking at it.
Photo Bottom Right – Broadway Historic Cemetery
Broadway Historic Cemetery is actually six small cemeteries combined into one. It’s estimated that 6,000 people are buried there, three bodies deep. Rumor has it that the city council wants to raze the cemetery without removing the bodies and build condos. Haven’t these cold-hearted officials watched the movie Poltergeist? My daughter leads haunted cemetery tours there, but we booked ours with a different company. She wanted to see how “the other guys” do it. The photo shows a mausoleum built in 1876. Although people have captured orbs and ghostly apparitions on film, we didn’t see anything. The cemetery was quiet and peaceful after dark, and we got rained on for a few minutes. I only got the creeps in one small section. The place felt mostly sad because it isn’t well-maintained; the mausoleums have been vandalized; headstones sink into the earth and disappear; there are no locked gates, and people drive through as if it were a major thoroughfare; vagrants hang out among the graves (thank goodness we didn’t see any); someone had dumped a bag of trash near the caretaker’s shed, which made me angry; and people have been known to smash headstones, which volunteers repair. But Galveston seems to have a strange attitude about death. After a hurricane disinterred bones from graves and scattered them around the island, people were told by city officials (those cold-hearted creeps again) to just throw them in the trash. Is that how you want your ancestors treated? They could’ve gathered up the bones and buried them again in a communal grave. Anyways, that nocturnal visit to the cemetery bothered me a lot afterward.
Other Activities
I tried authentic Louisiana-style gumbo and beignets for the first time at Little Daddy’s Gumbo Bar. I kept inhaling the powdered sugar on the beignets and coughing. But it was all so good! We went to the Sunflower Cafe for Southern corn cakes topped with spicy shredded chicken, black beans and rice, sweet tea, and buttermilk pie. Yummy! We ate lunch at the Greek Festival hosted by the Greek Orthodox Church. We played in the waves on the beach, drove around to see historic houses, and saw numerous turtle sculptures strategically placed around town. I had a peaceful, relaxed visit with my daughter and her boyfriend.
After I came home, I hooked up a new Roku streaming device and scattered my aunt’s ashes in a quiet, peaceful, remote wilderness place. We held a private ceremony to honor her. I’m working on placing a cenotaph for her in the family plot in Michigan.

I’m really enjoying our cooler weather. I love opening the windows and letting in the fresh air. Air conditioning is a necessity here, but I don’t like feeling cooped up inside. I get cabin fever real quick.
I wanted to make a video to honor cosmic horror writer H.P. Lovecraft for the spooky time of year. He was a master at creating mood and atmosphere. In my opinion, the best movie adaptation of his work is The Dunwich Horror (1970), starring Dean Stockwell and Sandra Dee.
Call of Cthulhu
This short video blends two of his stories, “The Dunwich Horror” and “The Call of Cthulhu.” There is no dialogue. Lovecraft fans will recognize the iconography. I first generated the discordant, atonal music soundtrack using Suno. Under my direction, it did a wonderful job. Next, I generated the images I wanted using Gemini Flash. I uploaded those into Runway and used Seedance to produce the video. Again, the graphics turned out beautifully. I hope you enjoy it! Thank you!

Happy October!
Instead of a female vampire video, I made one dedicated to Edgar Allan Poe. Another vampire video would’ve been too redundant. Poe’s Nocturne (the music) is strikingly similar to The Vampire’s Nocturne music but with significant differences. I hope you enjoy it.
I’ve been watching old Vincent Price horror movies based on Poe and Hawthorne. They seem kind of hokey now, but they definitely put me in the Halloween mood. One of my favorites is The Fall of the House of Usher. French composer Claude Debussy worked on a one-act opera of Poe’s story between 1908 and 1917 but never finished it. In 1988, Philip Glass and Arthur Yorinks completed their opera version, which has been produced many times since.

Our big rainstorms brought much-needed moisture and cold temperatures that felt wonderful! We have swarms of flying insects now, though, which are really annoying. In keeping with the season, the coyotes have been loud and vocal, and we’ve had flocks of ravens everywhere. There are six free-range cattle, but we haven’t seen them since the storms.

I wanted to make a visually beautiful, high-quality cinematic music video for Halloween. I chose a moody, melancholy Romantic Gothic Vampire theme and a classic nocturne.
Nocturne is French, meaning “of the night.” (Italian: notturno.) This musical form became popular in the 18th century, but composer Frederick Chopin took it to sublime heights in the 19th century.
I did my usual research into nocturnes to make sure I could create the right prompt for Suno. Since I didn’t write any lyrics, the prompt information for a classical piano solo was crucial to generating the music I wanted. I supplied the time (4/4) and key (E minor) signatures, the tempo (Andante, moderately slow), the progression of soft/loud/fast/slow directions, and the ending resolution. Then I waited for the result. Suno generated two versions: a longer version and a shorter one. I loved both. I chose to use the longer version for a male vampire. I will use the shorter one later for a female vampire.
This time, I used Eleven Labs to generate the video. I ran the video through three different AI processes to achieve its clear, sharp cinematic quality. I wanted the music and the video to flow smoothly like water.
