A Tool To Help You Shed Fat

The free myfitnesspal app is a great tool you can use to help keep track of your calorie count to stay on pace of your weight loss goals. With the myfitnesspal app, you fill out your profile with height, weight, activity level, etc. Then you can set a goal such as ‘lose 1 lb a week’ and it will calculate how many calories you can have per day to meet your goal.

After filling in your physical stats, goals, and finding your calorie intake goal per day you can log what foods you eat throughout the day, liquids you drink, and exercises you complete. When logging your food and physical activities, the myfitnesspal app will calculate the amount of calories you gained for the day from the food/drink you had or calories burned through your workouts. This app is a great way to help you stay on track with your weight loss goals if you are looking to lose fat to reveal your abs by summer or just to lose weight in general.

In terms of the app’s inventory of food, drinks, and workouts you can select, the food and drinks inventory is very good. I have never had an issue finding an item that I consumed, whether it is a specific item from a restaurant or something I cooked up myself. The workout selection however could use some improvement with calculating calories burned during certain exercises you perform in the gym. Other than that, the app is an overall solid app to help you hit your weight loss goals and in addition to that you can connect your myfitnesspal data with other fitness/health apps such as Fitbit and Runtastic.

I have used this app myself and have been able to lose 6 lbs in 4 weeks. After shedding a few lbs I can run much longer, my stamina is up, and my abs are starting to show more, getting more defined overall.

Build Your Foundation and Increase Muscle Potential

One of the most overlooked muscles of the body are the legs. Working out your legs aren’t very fun and requires a lot of energy to really exercise it. Most of us like working our core or arms aka the glory muscles, but fail realize how important exercising your legs are. There is a reason why your leg muscles are the biggest of your body and limiting the attention they deserve in the gym effects how big the rest of your muscles are.

Your legs are the foundation to your body. Unless you plan on standing still and walking moderately for the rest of your life then you don’t really need to worry about this, but for most of us our lives requires more movement than that.  Without a good foundation, your movements in whatever you do aren’t as natural which lead to a higher risk of injury.

Neglecting your leg muscles also take away from the muscle gains the rest of your body has. Testosterone and growth hormone help determine how much muscle you can build, so whether you are looking to bulk up or gain lean muscle you need an increase of these hormones in your body. The muscle that helps you produce the most amount of these hormones are your legs! To enable your bodies maximum muscle potential, start incorporating your lower body in your workout routines.

For most women, the idea of increase testosterone levels in their body may sound unappealing, but testosterone levels are still important in lean muscle building. Also, “testosterone conveys powerful anti-aging effects. It turns fat into muscle, keeps skin supple, increases bone mineral density, gives us positive mood, and boosts our ability to handle stress.” (New Understanding of the Role of Testosterone in Women) So overall, testosterone will provide us multiple benefits to our overall well-being.

Some leg workouts you can incorporating in your routines are:

Squats

Lunges

Dumbbell Step Up

Kettlebell Swing

4 Fat Burning Foods

Exercising to get that beach body or to cut weight by summer is only half battle. Making sure you eat right helps you further reduce fat as well as gives your body the nutrients it needs to exercise. Cutting weight is a math game, you need to reduce your calorie intake per day to shed off the pounds. “Because 3,500 calories equals about 1 pound (0.45 kilogram) of fat, you need to burn 3,500 calories more than you take in to lose 1 pound. So if you cut 500 calories from your diet each day, you’d lose about 1 pound a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 calories).” (Donald Hensrud, M.D.)

Add these 4 things to your diet to help you burn more fat:

1.) Green Tea

Studies have found that green tea contains polyphenols and catechins which activates thermogenesis, which leads to your body burning calories.

2.) Grapefruit

A study has found that adding grapefruit or grapefruit juice to your diet helps promote weight loss within your body. “The research indicates a physiological link between grapefruit and insulin, as it relates to weight management.” (Grapefruit And Weight Loss)

3.) Fiber

Eating foods high in fiber help make you feel fuller faster and reduces the fat that can be absorbed in your body by pushing it through your digestive system faster. Adding more fiber to your diet will allow you to portion control your meals better, reducing calorie intake. Some foods that are high in fiber are whole grains, pears, apples, almonds, and broccoli.

4.) Water

Simply adding more water to your diet can reduce your calorie intake. Drinking 2 cups of water before meals have shown to encourage further weight loss in the body. Along with this, replacing water with sodas or juices you make drink will help you further reduce your calorie count.

Add these 4 things to your diet and keep pushing forward to stay healthy and fit!

Decrease Time and Increase Results

How can we decrease our workout time, but maintain the same results as if we worked out for an hour? Seems like a formula that does not exist right? Science tells us otherwise.

There has been evidence that shows that high intensity interval training provides the same benefits or maybe even be better  than longer workout routines with liberal breaks in between. High intensity interval training is exactly how it sounds, it consists of high intensity activities with “recovery breaks” in between activities. For example, sprinting for X minutes, jogging for Y minutes, then sprinting again, and repeat. This article provides you with an example of a routine “which essentially combines a long run and a visit to the weight room in about seven minutes” (The Scientific 7-Minute Workout By Gretchen Reynolds)

What high intensity training does for you is it effectively burns calories, pushing your body to its maximum capabilities allowing for high calorie burn during and after the workout. Interval training allows for a boost in metabolism and helps increase your endurance effectively, by requiring your body to recover itself in between intervals.

Putting the 2 together gives you high intensity interval training for more effective workouts and allows you to utilize time more efficiently (refer to the infographic below)

Add This To Your Workout Arsenal

One of the most basic exercises that is overlooked is jump roping. You never really hear people mentioning this exercise, but boxers/MMA fighters, who are considered one of the most fit people in the world, always utilize this workout when they train.

ImageJump roping is a fantastic workout that builds your cardio, bone strength, foot speed, coordination and works on multiple muscle groups at once. It really targets your shoulders, calves, hamstrings, wrists, back, and is a lower impact activity compared to running. This puts less pressure on your joints, reducing wear and tear.

You can challenge yourself in many ways and go beyond the standard two-foot hop. Pump up this exercise by alternating your feet as you jump, increase the speed of the revolution of the rope, or  use a weighted rope.

Whether you’re a workout maniac or more casual about exercise, jump roping is a fantastic, effective, inexpensive way to warm up before training, burn your muscles out after training, or use as a main exercise.

Incorporate this to your routine and have fun with it!

Staying Motivated

Screen Shot 2013-05-01 at 6.11.50 PM

These days everyone is about their health. We want to eat better, get stronger, or get that beach body by the time summer hits. A lot of people make great strides at the start when they make that decision to make a turn around in their diet or exercise habits, but this gung-ho attitude quickly tapers for most of us. Why does this happen? Usually it’s because we de-prioritize exercising or don’t have the discipline to keep to a diet due to the lack of motivation, that “I want” “go getter” attitude disappears.

There are a few tactics that we can follow to keep us fueled to continue that drive towards staying healthy and fit:

1.) Set a Goal

As human beings, we want to succeed at whatever we do and hate the feeling of failing at something. If you set a goal for yourself  like dropping 5 pounds within a month, being able to run a 5K, or  getting that “V” shape, you will have a clear vision and end goal to determine your success.

After you create a goal, it’s still easy for this goal to get lost in the shuffle of life, so you want to make sure you have a reminder of this goal. Try writing this goal down on a post-it and put it on your daily to-do list, by your computer, or on your mirror. The main thing you want to make sure is that you are reminded of this goal that needs to be achieved and this will help you change how you plan your day to fit in workouts or keep you aware of what you eat in a day.

Screen Shot 2013-05-01 at 6.55.37 PM

2.) Make It Fun

The last thing on our minds are things we don’t enjoy, so if you aren’t enjoying something you will avoid it. Make sure you make exercising fun! Exercising doesn’t have to consist of running on a treadmill for miles or doing the same weighting lifting routine of  benching and squatting. Be creative and change it up. Try group fitness classes, workout with a friend and challenge each other during an exercise, play a sport, or vary the types of exercises you perform.  The key point here is find something you enjoy so you don’t dread it every time you do it.

With dieting, I know this can be extremely difficult resisting what you love eat, but it doesn’t have to be torture. When people decide they are going to eat healthy, they usually go extreme and make a 180 degree turn only eating salads and quitting ‘tasty meals’ cold turkey.

What I have learned is if you do this, you won’t last long at all. You still can enjoy some of the usual foods you eat as long as you portion it out and tweak it slightly taking a smaller portion of it and adding some “green” to it. An app that I started using to help me keep track of my caloric intake is myfitnesspal. This is a great app that will help you keep you on track of  how many calories you eat in a day (there will be a future post of fitness apps I have tested).

3.) Keep Yourself Accountable

Once you know what the finish line should look like and what steps to take to make it there, the last thing you want to do is assure that you can keep yourself accountable.

Finding a training partner that you exercise with doesn’t only just keep you company, but helps you stay on track and gives you that sense of  responsibility to  go  to the gym with your partner. If you can’t find a training partner, schedule your workouts. If you set time aside to complete a task you won’t have an excuse to skip it or say that you don’t have enough time.

With dieting, as mentioned in the previous point, using the app myfitnesspal  has really helped me stay on track with my calorie count per day. This app gives you the number of calories you are allowed to have according the goals you set and as you fill out your eating and exercise habits of the day, you get a visual of what your allotted calorie count is for the day (this is kind of like a bank account of calories you have to spend for the day)

So set a goal for yourself, have fun with it, and find someone or something that will keep you on par.
