Not quite the summer of love…but a recollection from the summer of tomatoes and my neighbor….
I really hadn’t noticed before. But there they were. Let me backtrack…

It was a hot and humid this Sunday morning. There wasn’t much I could do to the garden without really becoming drenched in sweat. It was truly unhealthy. So I did really easy and light things. I dead-headed some blooms from spent flowers, trimmed back the hydrangea’s that had overgrown the impatiens, and watered the now thirsty garden.

That’s when I heard my name being called from across the yard, beyond the fence. It was my neighbor. A kind, 60-plus woman, who had limited experience with gardening, was asking me for help with her tomatoes. Literally, and not a double entendre. Well, at least not initially.
We discussed things about lighting, watering, feeding schedules, et al, when I discovered that her hands were placed on her hips in a way that, well, accentuated other parts of her body, namely her breasts.
That’s when I noticed. I’m sure that they were not there last summer. Was I imagining this? Were they real? How would I know?
No, I wasn’t about to go poking about, because, hey, they’re not my tomatoes. Besides, you know, she’s my freakin’ neighbor. And frankly, I don’t want any midnight calls with further questions about her garden.
So this went on for about 45 minutes with me sounding like Martha Stewart, and her gyrating and contorting to show off her recent surgical procedure. I was determined not to have been caught staring, so I did my best to look at her tomatoes. Again, not a double entendre. But honestly, I hadn’t noticed (and probably wouldn’t have), but there they were.
Yup, like they were blinking and winking at me.
My reaction?
I had shorts on and I was starting to pitch a tent.
Neighboring is hard.
