āYour hairās on fire.ā
āNo, pants.Ā Youāre supposed to say pants.ā
āWhat is this pants?Ā When you say a lie there is the fire, yes?Ā In the hair?āĀ Heās smiling at me all teeth and snark.Ā Heās trying to be cute.Ā Trouble is, itās working.Ā
Weāve been doing this dance for three days, him playing Visitor From Somewhere and me playing Local Girl Guide.Ā We met on a street corner when he asked for directions to āThe Broadway, with the singing plays.āĀ I looked up at him, squinting into the heat, and that was it.Ā We walked up six blocks and over two, me getting into more and more trouble with each passing sidewalk square.Ā I donāt want this, donāt have capacity for a summer flirt.Ā But here we are.
āIt doesnāt matter anyway, Iām not lying.ā
āYou lie, Querida.Ā You are beautiful, but you lie.ā
Thatās what he calls me, Querida.Ā Iām not even sure he knows my name.Ā Weāre on the subway, holding onto the same steel pole, our hands almost touching.Ā We donāt talk much, the language barrier too great or the need too small.Ā Mostly we walk.Ā I show him the city and his arm brushes my arm, my shoulder.Ā He smiles and smiles and looks at me.Ā Watches me.Ā It makes me nervous.
āWhere now, my lovely guide?Ā What place will you show me?ā
Heās tall, taller than me, eyes bright and open like heās surprised to be alive.Ā I shouldnāt look at his mouth, shouldnāt think about his lips, but I do.
āYouāll see,ā I say, wondering how long I can keep this up.
The cramped subway car lurches to a halt and his hand slides slightly, brushing against mine from wrist to thumb.Ā I feel it in my fingertips and my ribcage and my kneecaps.Ā I donāt want this, donāt want to be caught up in some ridiculous thing that has no happy ending.Ā I need stability and commonality and grown-up life, not handsome foreigners with beautiful hands.Ā
We walk up the stairs into the bright sunshine and suddenly his lips are on my lips.Ā Itās hot, so very hot, the sun and the summer and the street and his mouth on mine.Ā He pulls away, just enough for our eyes to focus, waiting for a reaction. I donāt know how long heāll be here or his last name or his favorite movie.Ā So I hesitate.Ā Consider.Ā Think too hard.Ā
Then I smile.Ā
I take his hand.Ā
I leap.
