I’m alive!(生きちょる!)
“I’ve never seen anyone take notes before” – this is something that happened at a certain workplace.
It later dawned on me:“Ah, these people never took notes when they were students.”
In Japan, it is almost impossible to fail a grade – at least up through the university level.
No matter how poor one’s academic performance might be, it is still possible to get into a high school and eventually graduate from it.
These are stories from people who, in reality, struggled with their studies.
I’ve heard plenty of such accounts- things like, “High school English started with the ABCs,” or “The teacher wrote something on the blackboard and said, ‘These are the answers for tomorrow’s test, so memorize them,” or even, “Today’s lesson consisted of painting the school building.”
There are many people who have graduated from high school while their academic ability remains at an elementary school level.
In fact, I feel that even in Japan, it might be better to have students repeat a grade – ensuring they have truly mastered the fundamentals- before allowing them to graduate.
