Reader's Digest

I'm too lazy to re-post everything from my blog since last time, so here's an update:

Shadow Posting

Some of you may read more than one blog. In fact, I think most of you will. If the only blog you read is my blog... well, I'm chuffed.

Anyway, some have noticed that I've recently been posting on my sister's blog in her absence. I've provided links to my posts below, because I like seeing my stats go all over the place with outgoing links and so forth, and think of it as shameless self-promotion:

Local Ballot Measures

via Local Ballot Measures - Election Center 2008 - Elections & Politics from CNN.com

I'm a little annoyed, because I wrote a long, thought out commentary this morning, and thought it had posted, but it hadn't. Sigh. So, here we go again...

I've spent much of the past 24 hours refreshing this page, watching the numbers tick along, and now I have some comments to make:

Arizona - Prop 102 "Ban Gay Marriage"
Sigh. Don't look to get your same-sex relationship recognised here anytime soon. It looks to have been banned with a vote of 56%-44%. SHAME!

Arkansas - Initiative 1 "Ban Gay Couples Adopting Children"
SHAME! You have not only stopped a loving couple from being able to care for children where children may not normally be possible, but you've also stopped children from being able to find a loving home. It passed 57%-43%.

California - Prop 8 "Ban Gay Marriage"
For a progressive state, it's coming awfully close to being a bigoted as Prop 8 looks to pass by 500,000 votes. SHAME!!!!

Colorado - Amendment 46 "End Affirmative Action"
Don't expect special treatment anytime soon, you're all equal. This may or may not be a good thing. Gay? Woman? You're just the same as those men. Wikipedia explains it better than I can. It looks to fail by 20,000 votes. Look, I don't think it should pass, but this blog has a good balanced explanation.

Colorado - Amendment 48 "Human Life From Moment Of Conception"
Is that "bun in the oven" a life form? No, apparently. Or at least not in Colorado. Passed by 73%-27%

Florida - Prop 2 "Ban Gay Marriage"
SHAME!!!. 62%-38% to the ban.

Michigan - Prop 2 "Allow Stem-Cell Research"
Yes, you can now, passing 53%-47%. I'm a little mixed about this, but I think that a small degree of it is permissible. It's when people go mad that is a concern.

Nebraska - Initiative 424 "End Affirmative Action
Yep. No 'discrimination' is allowed, by which they mean that gender, sexuality, race, religion, etc, cannot be considered. It's so hard to define what this means. Equal Opportunity Employment is the way to go. But I don't know if this means yes or no...

There were two other ballots on abortion, but I have no position on this. I think there are times when it is necessary, but running around fixing up a 16-year-old girl's 'mistake' is just wasting a life. Both of the measures look to fail, which means people can go around with a coathanger and a bucket Alfie-style. Sigh.

I am glad that Obama won, and McCain's concession was suitable and not too overdone, but the booing really got me. Sore losers, anyone?

Interestingly, I was looking at the results from the 2004 election, and I didn't realise that Kerry came so close. I can't believe we had 8 years of Bush.... but then Australia had 11 years of Howard and that was beyond me too. My mother and brother are both wondering how long before someone tries to kill Obama... great. Don't you dare!

I do love a good election race. I look forward to the next state election in 2011, because I predict the rise of the minority parties. Though I have a feeling Fatty O'Barrell will win. Sigh. Bring on US Election 2012!

A plea

The great thing about America is everybody should vote.

George W. Bush
Austin, Texas; December 8. 2000

If you're an American, and you stumble across my blog today...
vote2
Please Vote.
Vote for Obama/Biden
Vote Democrat
Vote No on Prop 8 in California
Vote No on Prop 2 in Florida
Vote No on Prop 102 in Arizona

Please, your country needs you. The world needs you. And one day, when I want to get married, I want some choice in where I go. Massachusetts is just too far away :P

Two things I forgot to mention...

First off, here is a picture of Em. Isn't she cute? I made her cry because she refused to say "ta" when she wanted to get her ball back from me.
My little cousin Em

The other is that a little while ago, I got this from Kate...
superior_scribbler_award
Thanks Kate. I would recommend 5 other blogs, but the only one I can really think of (who doesn't have one already) are StevieD at Real Euphoria, and Gus at Volacious Gus. Both have been a great friend and given interesting advice and commentary over the past two years or so that I have been reading them.

Dan, of course, gets one, but I'm biased. No further explanation necessary. :)

Moving on up

I just put in my application for student housing. One day, I might live somewhere like this:

What the hell have I just done?

Fitting In

I was sitting in my backyard on Saturday morning, and I saw something that was a little odd. This hibiscus had a flower that, unlike all the others, was pink and white. I imagine it had been crossbred from the other plant across the garden. But, it leads me nicely into what I want to talk about.
It's a little bit different
My mother told me she didn't want me to tell anyone, and I had been doing reasonably well at that. But, I decided I couldn't keep on not talking about it. I told my brother last week, as I said, and that went well.

As November is FAMILY BIRTHDAY MONTH!!! (Dziadek 2/11; Zosh 10/11; Me 16/11; Jo 20/11; and 'bump' ~14/11), we had a BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA! at Zosh's which I didn't want to go to but given the fact that it was for me, I kinda had to go. Anyway, about halfway through, Mike went out for a smoke, and I followed a moment later and asked to bum one. Mike and I don't usually talk. We've got almost nothing in common. He's a painter who works at a TAFE.

Anyway, we chatted a little, about his work and mine, etc, and then I asked him to recall something that happened at Christmas 6 years before. My brother had seen me looking at gay porn. He was trying to tell Mike. I wrestled my brother, trying to keep his mouth shut, but it was no use, Pete said "Janek likes to look at naked men!". Pete ran away, and Mike asked me if it was true. I vehemently denied it. I corrected him.

Why Mike? Well, for starters, I know he can keep his mouth shut. He won't tell my father or aunt and uncle. Also, I knew he wouldn't give a shit. And he didn't. I said he could tell Al, Jo, and Vic if he wanted to, but he said that Jo will tell Al, and Al has a huge mouth and will 'accidently let it slip out'. I'm not ready for that just yet.

Anyway, that's me. I'm that pinky hibiscus flower, I'm don't fit in completely. I'm white enough to still be part of the family, and my pink bits are showing a little bit.

Friday I'm in love

Lots of things happen on a Friday. My cousin Al was born on a Friday. Dan and I got together on a Friday. There have been lots of songs written about, well, Friday. So, here's some happenings from my Friday...

The Brother

After the many successes of telling my mother, I was once again put off telling people about being gay. But, in the car on the way to uni, he and I were chatting as we always do, and I said, "Well, I guess you know, but I have a boyfriend", and he was like, "Duh, he's in your Facebook profile picture". Totally cool with it. Here's a photo from our journey:
Mad brothers in car

Trapped...

As lots of my friends know, I'm a JP, so when I was asked by my friend Mattykins to sign some stuff for him I leapt at the opportunity (well, not actually, this was quite a figurative leap). Anyway, we met at the local bar, and then when he didn't know where the Research Office had been relocated too (and considering how close it was), I offered to show him. Up to Level 6 of the new building we went, he dropped the paperwork in, and then the two of us and two other guys got into the next lift. As the door was about to close, a girl jumped in at the last moment. We couldn't remember what level we specifically wanted, so we pressed two different buttons and the lift set off.
And then, stopped.
It was at this time that the lift, which resembled something like the inside of a beehive, displayed this ominous sign:
Rather than showing a level, it just showed --
We called for help, then all sat down and had a conversation... about PhDs (What they wanted to do, what I was doing) and Angus MacFarlane. As one does. It took about 15 minutes for something to happen, and when it did, the lights all went off. Then back on. Then we moved a little, the doors opened, and we were greeted with three stunned men (who were wondering why the lift had taken so long) in the basement. Once we'd clambered over the gas mains and passed the electricity substation we emerged from under the library. I hope that Tom, Dick, and Harriet (because I've forgotten their actual names) go well with their work.

Presentationising

The slew of posts in the middle of the night were probably sign enough... I had a presentation to do on Friday of my thesis. After escaping from the lift, I printed, laminated, and put up for display the poster. A few people wandered around, I chatted for about an hour, then got sick of it so I sat outside smoking. Somehow, I suppose it was the combination of the walking stick and mentioning Dan, I was given a special commendation prize of $250. Yay me!

Frank

My final Friday happening was the discovery of a small spider who has decided my weathershield is the ideal place for his web. I discovered this as I went to flick some ash out the window and disturbed said net. I've named him Frank.
Frank, the spider

So, that was my Friday. Fun times, no?
