On this day in 1966, The Yardbirds played the Capitol Theatre in Cardiff.
Before I was in the Yardbirds, their manager Simon Napier-Bell got them a big advance from EMI. So Jeff Beck bought a Corvette, and he gave me this Telecaster. I began playing it in the Yardbirds in the summer of 1966 when the two of us were in the band together.
There was a section within our live set where Jeff and I would play together. He was playing his Les Paul and I was playing the Telecaster, also with a bow. It gave me a chance to jump right in at the deep end; if we were going to do double-guitar stuff, then I wanted to establish the bow sympathetically. I thought it would be fun for everybody to hear that texture.
As far as I know, there aren’t any bootlegs of Jeff and me doing live shows, but I know that those gigs were really, really good.
