A recent propensity-match-controlled observational study suggested that modern radiographic contrast does not increase the risk for nephropathy (NEJM JW Emerg Med Mar 2017 and Ann Emerg Med 2017; 69:577). Now, investigators report the results of a large meta-analysis of observational studies that compared renal outcomes in patients undergoing computed tomography (CT) who received radiographic contrast and those who did not receive contrast.
Twenty-eight studies involving more than 100,000 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Most of the studies (82%) included patients with baseline renal insufficiency.
