From the book jacket:

Matilda Boseley's adult ADHD diagnosis was a massive, earth-shattering event. She was given a prescription but had no idea what ADHD meant for her identity, her relationships or her future. Twelve months of confusion later, journalist Matilda embarked on an epic voyage to figure out what's really happening in the stormy seas of the ADHD brain and write the guide she wished she'd had.

The Year I Met My Brain is the ultimate travel companion for navigating and enjoying life as an ADHD adult, covering: what adult ADHD symptoms look like, why so many ADHDers (especially females) are missed as kids, how the disorder impacts our relationships, careers and self-esteem, why we unfairly treat ourselves like failures and how to find self-forgiveness and healing, practical tips for social and organisational wins, and most importantly, how to make our lives work to fit our brains rather than trying to force our brains to fit our lives.

April is both PMDD Awareness Month and Autism Acce April is both PMDD Awareness Month and Autism Acceptance Month. Those of us who exist within this overlap know how exhausting it can be to repeatedly face gaslighting, dismissal, and the general challenges of day-to-day life.

Our nervous systems are working HARD, processing deeply, and working intensely. That is why my word for April is ‘attuned’. Two of the most underdiagnosed groups share a month that asks us to pay attention. That means something!

To be attuned is the opposite of being dismissive of ourselves. It means noticing what is real in our bodies and our experiences. It means not trying to explain our reality away or reframe it to make others comfortable. It means not performing ‘okayness’, or pushing through until we crash just because people expect us to 🤔.

I’m a life coach with a nervous system that doesn’t always cooperate, so this month I’m building my attunement muscle. I’m doing it for myself, my fellow PMDD warriors, my fellow Autistics, and the clients I work with. Like anything worth mastering, this takes practice. Attunement isn’t something we can simply ask the universe to drop into our laps. We can’t sprout attunement from ‘toxic positivity’ seeds. It has to come from a recognition of what is actually happening.

So, what is your word for April? Drop me a comment or DM me and let’s talk about it.

With gratitude,

Leslie Crudup Villagarcia

The people in your life don’t have to fully unders The people in your life don’t have to fully understand PMDD in order to support you. Sometimes it just helps to have someone you know you can turn to when you need some comfort during your luteal phase.

April is PMDD awareness month, so this conversation is alive and kicking.

And if you’re ‘the friend’ in this video, there’s no hate. We know you're trying. We know you love us and that you are coming from a good place. Just remember to listen to your PMDD warrior friends. Don’t make us ‘perform’ happiness when we’re just trying to get through another day. Take us at our word when we do express what we need. And, please, skip the affirmations 😉

Send this to a well-meaning friend who doesn’t quite yet understand.

Toxic positivity is trash. Here is your annual rem Toxic positivity is trash. Here is your annual reminder that calling today 'Harmony Day' is gaslighting....

Today is International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This was the name given to the day in 1966 by the United Nations in memory of the Sharpeville Massacre, a terrible incident during which police opened fire on a peaceful demonstration against apartheid in the township of Sharpeville in South Africa.

Australia is the only country in the world that calls today Harmony Day (since 1999), claiming that it is a celebration of multiculturalism and the achievements of people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, effectively erasing the original purpose of this day--to remind people that the fight against racism is an ongoing battle. We haven't reached some imaginary finish line. We are not done doing the work.

While celebrating people's accomplishments is a great thing, it's important to remember that taking a day marking the fight for human rights and wrapping it up in more 'palatable' language is a form of toxic positivity. It is a form of gaslighting to suggest that everything is fine and that the real lived experiences of people experiencing racial discrimination are somehow exaggerated. It's very much a surface-level approach to recognising the value in our cultural differences.

So remember, folks, that language is powerful. It has the power to influence action (or inaction). It has the power to erase. When used for good, it has the power to change not only our own inner perspectives, but those of the world arounds us. So let's use it wisely. We cannot address racism if we can't even use the word.

Sincerely,

Leslie Crudup Villagarcia
