Sunday Pipes #248

Halloween, followed by All Saints Day, Followed by All Souls Day.

Death summons the dead to dance at midnight. The organ transcription is wonderfully theatrical, with eerie passages and tremendous climaxes. Exactly the sort of thing that makes the hair on your arms stand up.

Jonathan Scott performs Danse Macabre Op. 40 by Camille Saint-SaÃŦns in the organ arrangement by Edwin Lemare on the Hradetzky Organ of The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), Manchester, UK.

Worth Remembering

It was ten years ago today that one of the firefighters  I worked with at the ADPS Fire Division, died in a single car accident.

Phillip “Weesey” Weese was 30 years old and  one of the nicest guys I had the pleasure of working with. He was a gentle man who worked tirelessly, following his dream to become a law enforcement officer.

Phillip’s  memory lives on as his sister works with me and we get to talking about him every once in a while.

His dedication to public service deserves to be remembered on this anniversary of his death.

Location, Location, Location.

It has been a crazy-busy week  and I apologize, not that anyone really cares, that I’ve missed a few days.

Below is a link to a very intriguing article about aging  and how it can be impacted by where you live.

Why the snowboarder ages faster than the surfer.

I am glad that I have always preferred being close to sea level.

Another story from our my Substack community, this time from @End-Of-Life Educator

“Diamonds In My Ears”

I stumbled across this review of Hurry Sundown, the title track from the 1977 album by the Outlaws. I am posting it, first,  because I like the song and second, because of  Harri’s comments and reaction.

The song has always been a favorite of mine as the guitar tradeoffs between the late Hughie Thomasson and the late Billy Jones are as good as it gets. The contrast between the distinctive tones of Billy’s Les Paul and Hughie’s Stratocaster helped earn the band the title of “Florida Guitar Army”. The vocal harmonies add layers to the mix and as Harri so nicely states  it is “Diamonds in my ears”.

Just watch his face as the song progresses. I doubt he was an Outlaws fan before hearing this.

Below is the video of his observation/comments, but if you are interested in seeing the band perform the song live, here is a performance, shortly after the release of the album.

This song is almost 50 years old, but can stand head and shoulders above most of the garbage that passes as music these days.

Planning Ahead

First, I must apologize for  having to take down Sunday Pipes #248 shortly after publishing it.  Something “wonky” happened between Youtube and WordPress and it continues at this time.

But, today  . . .

When the girls were younger, in preparing for Halloween, I would have multiple spotlights bathing our white home in black light. There would be powerful speakers placed in the second floor windows looping  E. Power Biggs performing Bach’s Toccata & Fugue in Dmin to help set the mood and to entertain my neighbors and their children. We even dressed our four, Black Labs up in costumes to help greet the trick or treaters.  A good time was had by all.

That was then.

This is now.

Thus, here is my suggestion as to how my wife and I should prepare for Halloween.

Of course, my suggestion  doesn’t matter as one of our daughters, her husband and their two children (we already have their dogs) will be visiting from VA for the weekend.

My wife has big plans.

I will comply, with a smile on my face and the love of Jesus in my heart.

Let’s Get Started

Fuel for a day of cleaning the garage and getting the spare bedroom ready for our daughter and her family to visit next week.

Maybe a nap, if I’m lucky.

When Music Videos Mattered, #TBT

I was but a child, but I still have this album on vinyl and it provides me with lots of comforting, old memories.

From back in the days when music was created by real musicians and videos were shot on 8mm film.

Oh, my life was so simpler back then.

Most people know Pure Prairie League for “Amie,” but they have a outstanding catalogue of music to their credit.

Anyone else remember this song?

Rules For A Peaceful Life.

Rules for a peaceful life:

Call who calls you.

Ignore who ignores you.

Forget who forgets you.

Love those that love you.

A Thing Of Beauty

A photo that makes my heart flutter, in a concerned cardiologist kind of way.

Is this creation not a thing of beauty?

I believe some folks would refer to this as “Food Porn”

I would not disagree.

Sunday Pipes #247

This is another pice performed by Jan Liebermann.

Please note that he is playing from memory and not reading a score.

Truly remarkable!
