Bible Journaling: We are loved (BJ-51)

For the second of three linked themes, I have designed five new illustrations around the simple truth that ‘we are loved’. It’s a message that weaves its way throughout Scripture, and the verses I have chosen span both Testaments. Just as it was true then, it remains true now: we are loved.

Art Journaling Session: Bubble Bath

On my list of prompts for this year’s art journaling sessions, I had just two words for this month: ‘bubble art’. It’s been a long while since I blew through a straw, making painty foam, and when the technique appeared in my Facebook feed, it went on the list. It wasn’t enough, though, to merely make a background and the idea spun off into this layout:

Bible Journaling: We are known (BJ-50)

In the first of a series of three linked themes, my Bible journaling this month concentrates on the fact that ‘we are known’. Five illustrated verses unequivocally demonstrate how important we are to God and how He knows us inside and out.

What struck me while looking for verses was how many different sorts of ‘knowing’ there are. Being seen, searched, foreknown, counted and recognised individually within a crowd all appear in these five verses. That gave me plenty of scope for finding five very different ways of illustrating essentially the same idea – including, inevitably, a fairly dreadful pun…

Art Journaling: Perfect Pearl Roses

On my technique list for this month’s art journaling session was something using Perfect Pearls. I wanted to find a way of using their shimmer as more than just a background or highlight, and these loose, layered roses turned out to be a really simple Perfect Pearls technique. For the unfamiliar, these are mica powders from Ranger that contain a binder that reacts with water or Perfect Medium to set fast. Unsurprisingly, they leave a pearlescent sheen and work best on dark substrates. Combining this with an idea from a relentless Facebook feed, I came up with this layout:

Bible Journaling: Surrender (BJ-49)

This month’s theme of ‘surrender’ weaves its way through Scripture from start to finish. Picking the verses wasn’t difficult, but there is a consistent wording that repeats across the generations of writers which needed different approaches to creating the illustrations. Here are the five Bible journaling verses I’ve selected:

Art Journaling: Altered Images

In my notebook, well, Notes app, I had the theme ‘altered images’ written down for August’s art journal session. Pondering this at 4am one morning (don’t you just hate a creative brain mulling things over in the early hours?) I looked up Altered Images, the band, and their hit ‘Happy Birthday’. After that, this mixed-media layout came together nicely, blending collage, stickers, AI-image generation and a little bit of experimentation:

Bible Journaling: God’s Word & Truth (BJ-48)

It’s time for another set of illustrated verses to be released into the wild, this time with the theme of ‘God’s Word and truth’. The two are intrinsically linked, obviously, and it didn’t take long to choose five verses for this month’s Bible journaling. As usual, the templates are available for you to trace into your own Bibles and make your own version. Use the link at the bottom of the post. Here are my coloured examples:

Bible Journaling: Worship & Devotion (BJ-47)

For my Bible journaling this month, I chose five verses on the theme of worship and devotion. They have very different expressions of what worship looks like, reflected in my illustrations. I tried to find concepts that didn’t just have hands raised, but that image of worship and devotion is as absolutely intrinsic as bowing down. More on that further down the post. In the meantime, here’re the five illustrations:

Bible Journaling: Promise & Covenant (BJ-46)

I’ve created five new illustrations for my Bible journaling, based on a theme of ‘promise and covenant’. I had to look up the difference, as on the surface, they seem to be the same concept. A promise can be defined as a declaration of intent, whereas a covenant is a formal relationship agreement with obligations, expectations and enduring commitment. The Bible is woven with promises and covenants, holding God’s plan together – these verses are the ones I chose from the multitude that are available:

Art Journaling Session: Wrinkled Resist

Inevitably, and inadvertently, it’s very easy when using waxed paper to protect other pages in your journal, and heat tools on the page you’re working on, to melt wax onto places you don’t want. Inspired by this faux pas, I have deliberately used wax paper in this month’s art journaling session for a wrinkled resist technique.
