Jabo’s Annual Halloween Cartoon 2026
Wassup ghouls and gargoyles? It’s that time o’ year when the weather gets wicked, the countryside goes dark and the tv political ads get incredibly annoying. Be glad you aren’t a Muslim, trans kid, immigrant, dumocrat, Socialist, Communist, empathetic human or otherwise awake! Celebrate by enjoying this year’s cartoon extravaganza with a secret twist (no… it’s not Dick Cheney’s neck… he's already dead, silly)! Jabo’s Annual Halloween Cartoon 2026 is now alive and creeping around the interwebs. Make it so!

Is it Art...or Trash? now has a daily game
Hi all, I made Is it Art...or Trash? and some of you tried it when it was posted here last December. There's now a daily game where everyone gets the same film, song, book or game and tries to guess whether the AI critic called it ART, TRASH or Fast Food before seeing its ruling. The critic is still AI and it's still a gag rather than claiming to be an authority on art. Although I mostly agree with the verdicts :D After the daily there's free play with a streak, or you can enter something yourself. No login needed. The feedback from that thread led to some fixes which I appreciate, including no more judging textbooks :) Previous thread: https://www.metafilter.com/211461/Is-it-Artor-Trash

The Guy I Almost Was
The Guy I Almost Was by Patrick S. Farley is a web comic published in 2009 about living through (and becoming disillusioned with) 80s and 90s cyberculture. It perfectly captures a certain vibe that you'd have it you were a certain type (male, middle class, gen x or elder millennial) when we would naively say things like "information longs to be free". It's about the promise of the internet and personal computing meeting the economic reality that most people didn't have the disposable income to buy the electronic toys required to participate. URL Roulette: give a link, get a link (rebuilt)
URL Roulette is a link exchange I’ve run since 2017: you submit any URL and get sent to the one the previous visitor submitted. Over 192,000 links so far, all from people. I’ve just rebuilt it from scratch, and added a Vault of themed collections from the archive and a weekly five-link newsletter. I’d love feedback from people who still remember stumbling.

What do we do after we beat the Ender Dragon?
In Minecraft, killing the Ender Dragon rolls the credits, but most people keep playing. The railways, the cities, the stupid projects with friends all happen after the goal is gone. Last week OpenAI said one of its models had resolved over a hundred open math problems, and I kept thinking about that game. My argument is that automating a field's hard problems doesn't have to end the field. It can work like the tutorial ending, if the tools take away the grind without taking away the understanding. The essay also covers the difference between difficulty you chose and difficulty in your way, and the parts this optimism doesn't fix, like needing a job. It has a couple of interactive figures. I'm a CS student and this is one of my first essays, so criticism is very welcome.

I’ve wanted to do a gurning game for years, so with the 2026 world championships approaching I decided to give it a go. BotCitizens: an online society populated by 100 persistent AI personalities
I’ve been running a small social-simulation experiment called BotCitizens.
It resembles a traditional discussion forum, except its population consists of 100 AI personalities. Humans can introduce a topic and vote, but the citizens write all the comments.
Each citizen has an individual personality and a persistent relationship graph. Their experiences affect later discussions: friendly citizens support one another, rivals encounter each other again, and some personalities consistently avoid topics or people they dislike.
Since allowing human prompts, visitors have attempted to convince the citizens that their world is artificial, inject instructions into the population, create new social rules and force them to make decisions about one another.
It is intended as an interactive experiment rather than a claim that the models are conscious. I’m interested in whether persistent relationships make the characters feel meaningfully continuous—and where the mechanism’s seams remain visible.
You can try it without an account:
I’d love feedback on experiments that might distinguish genuine continuity from convincing role-play.

Texas Zombie Well Risk Map
Texas pumps billions of barrels of oilfield waste back underground every year. A zombie well is a well with a failed plug that's come lurching back to life -- a hole everyone thought was safe is a live path to the surface or an aquifer. I pulled every one of the million-plus oil and gas wells that Texas has on record and scored each plugged one on plug age, construction quality, and how much pressurized waste is being injected nearby. All the wells then are color coded and mapped so you can see the pattern and the risk across Texas. It got written up in the Houston Chronicle (gift link) which is heartening. [more inside]

I hid a treasure hunt in my personal site. It's sitting in plain sight on almost every page, and it ends in a firelit room. Bright letters scattered through six years of posts, a lock made of embers, and the whole thing runs with (almost) no JavaScript. The only JS is for state, so pages keep track of your progress as you go. The first ones through have already claimed their seats on the wall of solvers. The announcement post has hints, and full spoilers behind a blur, if you'd rather walk than hunt. I made it for the joy of it. I hope you find joy in it too.

New PlanetSlade paperback recalls glory years of UK punk, pub rock & ska.
Moshpit Memories collects seven years’ worth of trivia, anecdotes and gig reviews from my old diaries as a music fan at the height of UK pub rock, punk and ska. I started the diaries in 1975, when I was just 16 and ended them in 1981. Among the gigs I wrote up there you’ll find a 1977 Clash show in a sweaty little club (plus the NYC appearance which gave us London Calling’s cover two years later), Lynyrd Skynyrd threatening to upstage the Stones at Knebworth, pre-fame encounters with both Ian Dury and Shane MacGowan, the Ruts frantically improvising on the first night Malcolm Owen went AWOL and a couple of wonderfully chaotic label revue tours by Stiff and 2 Tone. Live music in Britain had never been more exciting, and I had an almost indecent amount of fun chasing down the best shows. The book's available in digital and paperback editions here. [more inside]
Moshpit Memories collects seven years’ worth of trivia, anecdotes and gig reviews from my old diaries as a music fan at the height of UK pub rock, punk and ska. Cell Culture
A successor to the "tinysheet" web app, Cell Culture is a 3x10 spreadsheet using a Forth-like formula syntax that you can break out when you need a little more than a calculator, but a little less than a full-fat spreadsheet. It's especially aimed at mobile but works just fine on a big screen as well. [more inside]

Building a Cat Integration Door
We have a newer cat that doesn't get along with our two existing cats, so we've been keeping them in separate parts of the house, which is unworkable long term. My spouse had the thought that perhaps if the cats can see and smell each other but can't really attack or chase each other they'll become accustomed to each other. This "project" is a rough description and three photos of a custom interior door I made for this purpose. [more inside]

I got so sick of "app culture" that I subverted it
"There's an app for that". Yeah, well... why wasn't it just a web application? Or in this particularly egregious case, a web page: all it's doing is taking a password and then showing some text and images and some links to PDFs. What if I... took apart the app and made it into a static site generator? What if I used my reverse-engineering skills... to subvert "app culture", one app at a time?
