Nostalgia, again.
02:09pm 26/09/2009
I blame it on my approaching birthday.

After watching old cartoons, I found myself rereading old favorites. The books I read so many time that I have the best parts memorized. I don't feel like posting a list right now, but I might later. Just for the fun of comparing old loves with others.

I've also been wondering, after the excitement at the MTV award show, about music videos. Are they coming back again? I remember slowly avoiding MTV and VH1 as they slowly dropped music from their schedules. There were about ten years where there just weren't music videos, as far as I was concerned. But now technology can support video online, but I don't really watch them, just use it as a convenient way to listen to music sometimes.

Still, even with this increased availability to watch the darn things, the videos up for MTV's award were boring. Part of it might be that I'm not a fan of the songs, but that silly Poker song was the only video that was a little eye catching. And the controversial Beyonce video was as bland as the repetitious song.

Oh dear, I meant to just say how much I loved the Duran Duran video for "Come Undone". How I would wake up early to see it played after a rap video where the dancing girls wore fur jackets in snow. And then post a link to my favorite video: Daft Punk, "Around the World". Instead I wind up whining about the kids these days and their awful pop music.

Oh well, I did blame it on my birthday.

Amazing Things!
08:15pm 18/09/2009
On a whim, I decided to see what was available for watching on Hulu. I can't say much about what Hulu is or isn't or it's impact on anything. My interest is casual, and that is one of the benefits to not being in classes: Looking at things because I am curious and not because I need to think about them.

Why am I writing a post if I have no insight or opinion? Because Hulu has the full series of my favorite childhood cartoon: "The Mysterious Cities of Gold". I think the proper term would be anime, as it was created by the French and Japanese, but that's not important. It's about the same age as I am, and you can really hear it in the music. I can remember getting super excited to hear the theme song and dancing all over the family room as I sang along.

The story is of a young boy and young girl who explore South America with early conquistadors in search of, you guessed it, the mysterious cities of gold. Along the way they discover a magic flying bird ship, and other exciting things I'm not sure if I remember correctly (explosions? true love? long lost family? magic powers?). One of the best features are the little educational videos at the ends of the episodes.

I know that I am viewing this through some major nostalgia, but my excitement is something that everyone can relate to over some childhood memory.

On Wisconsin
06:57pm 10/09/2009
Did you know that some of the "Twilight" characters are from Wisconsin? According to the list of fictional characters from Wisconsin found on Wikipedia it's true, but I don't quite buy Edward Cullen as a Wisconsinite.

I find myself noticing casual mentions of Wisconsin heritage in movie and tv shows. The story line in "Love, Actually" stood out. It just seems like such a strange choice. I suppose the opportunity to make jokes about cows, beer, crazy political extremism, and the funny accent is just too hard to pass up.

The list on Wikipedia is extensive, but I could think of two they missed. Any you know of?

  • 06:13 "Be Kind, Rewind" Started slow and annoying, but wound up amusing and a little touching. Fats Waller is pretty cool. My sister told me so. #

Long and Long and Long ago
01:12am 22/06/2009
It seems about forever since I've posted in here, and no surprise. My time has not been my own, and most of my energy has been directed to official things. I feel a bit silly that the reason I'm posting this entry is to direct the attention of anyone who might still look at this to http://that1book.blogspot.com

It's a new project. In short, if you've ever read a book, forgotten the title, and want help finding it, that's what we'll do. We're also going to be posting reading suggestions, and any other random thing we think of.

I feel exceptionally silly because I think the two people most likely to see this post are also blog authors. Oh well!

Now I need to get back to trying to catch up on an email backlog that is just embarrassing.

  • 18:51 "Time" It slowly screws with your head until you have no idea what is going on, what is real. Definitely worth watching a second time. #

  • 23:10 "Mr. Bones" Too many jokes about feces and golf for me to sit in the same room for the entire thing. #
  • 23:11 "Commando" I have seen this Schwarzenegger movie more times in a row than you have, and I'd probably be willing to watch it again. #

  • 23:22 "Eastern Promises," Naked fight scene has prevented me from holding any coherent thoughts on the plot. Learned about Russian prison tattoos. #
  • 23:25 "27 Dresses" "Bride Wars" Predictable offensive gender stereotypes and unbelievable happily ever afters. Great time wasters for airplanes. #
  • 23:35 "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" Can't quite remember the title or the ending. Gambit disappointed. But I saw it in Bots before it came out here! #
  • 23:42 "Star Trek (2009)" It was fun! Not as fun as time traveling whales, and the villain was dull, but it was still fun! #
  • 23:44 "Slumdog Millionaire" The ending seemed a bit out of place, but it was an otherwise good balance of grim and adorable. Also! Kid from Skins! #
