Full moon shines
an ungodly gleam
in my eyes
bone chilling
ripples down
my spine —
muscles stretch
shirt buttons pop
dark hair sprouts
from my toes
to my scalp —
claws unfold
like switchblades
stabbing the dirt
a longer snout
now bears sharp
canine teeth
gnashing rabidly —
ears enlarge
into pointed
devil horns
a deep howl
rips from the
bowels of my
vocal chords —
running on all fours
tearing through
the underbrush
in a sinister forest
I search for
fresh meat to eat —
the snap of a twig
raises my hackles
as a rabbit races
past me
picking up speed
I lunge my body
mouth open wide
like a steel trap
catching my prey
unawares
blood spurts onto
moonlit ferns
hunger temporarily
turned —
a thin vein of clouds
covers the night sky
as I metamorphose
back to human form
curled naked
on the ground
breathing heavy
waiting for my
wild side to return.
