Implications of Pattern Day Trading Rule Repeal
By Michael Buck
FINRA Rule 4210, adopted in 2001, stated that any customer who made four or more day trades (buying and selling the same security same-day) within five business days in a margin account got labeled a pattern day trader (PDT) â as long as those trades were more than 6% of their total trading activity in that window. Once an account was flagged, at least $25,000 of equity was required, or the account would get frozen from further day trading. The rule was adopted partly in response to the tech crash in 2000.
