Mobile Bay National
Estuary Program

Estuaries, where the rivers meet the sea, are waters we all share

The Mobile Bay National Estuary Program leads coastal conservation.

Since its designation by the United States Congress in 1995, the MBNEP and its Management Conference has led the wise stewardship of Alabama's estuaries and coast by championing a series of Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plans (CCMPs). Each plan has evolved with science, community priorities, and the growing needs of Alabama’s coast. With support from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, the MBNEP has become a trusted convener and catalyst for estuarine protection and restoration.

The MBNEP protects the waters and natural areas that make our region special. We bring together scientists, environmental experts, community leaders, and residents like you to keep our waters clean, restore landscapes, and support local wildlife.

What We Do

Our efforts ensure that the places we love for fishing, boating, swimming, and exploring remain healthy for generations. Whether you live near the coast or enjoy the area’s natural beauty, the health of our estuary affects everyone.

Where We Work

Our Values

Through an extensive citizen-input process first conducted for the 2013 CCMP and revalidated in over the past two years, six common values continue to be very important to those living in coastal Alabama. These values reflect a deep connection to place and provide the foundation for the goals and actions outlined in the Waters We Share. Click on the description under each icon for short videos about each, and how they are connected to each other.
