  • Threadloop

Any sewists on Threadloop? It’s meant to be a “Ravelry for sewing,” of sorts. I set up a profile and added the shirt I finished yesterday. I’m impressed with the pattern database, which found nearly everything in my library. Interestingly though, they don’t even attempt to create a fabric database. You can catalogue your stash, but it’s all just user-generated with no attempt at creating a canonical list of fabrics (presumably because there are just too darn many in the world). You also can’t search patterns by fabric requirements, again because it’s too complex. Still, this seems to be a useful way to sort through my own patterns, most of which are PDF these days.

  • Overgrown

I normally skim through the Boing Boing RSS feed pretty quickly, but I did a double-take when I recognised Charlie Gerard in the screenshot! They linked to a fun Chrome extension she built that fills your abandoned browser tabs with weeds. I love that Charlie is getting back to building cool stuff online. I remember seeing her control a drone with a Leap Motion back in 2014, and she spoke at the SydJS I curated in 2016 as well. I sent this browser extension to Rodd, who immediately shuddered and said NO. (He reckons he has 300+ tabs open.) 😬

  • Computers are the worst.

My site was running like a dog today because I was getting hit by some scraper that was trying to grab every single post, so I turned on WAF rules in Cloudfront which solved that problem (but will probably cost me a stupid amount on my monthly bill) but then I suddenly couldn’t upload any images so obviously one of the rules was blocking that but which one? which necessitated an hourlong dive into various logs until we narrowed it down to the exact rule and turned that off so now I can upload images again.

I really, really, really need to move to a static site. 🫠

  • Moomin cups at Breadtop

My friend Keith texted me yesterday to ask if I’d seen the special reusable Moomin coffee cups at Breadtop. Ummmmm, what?!

Thankfully they still had a couple at the Broadway Breadtop. (They were sold out of the special mooncakes though.) Thanks Keith!!

  • Finished! Periwinkle shirt in Liberty

Spent the last couple of days making up a Periwinkle shirt (from Closet Core) for myself in some Liberty Tana Lawn that I got in Japan a couple years ago. This is a straight size 14 with no adjustments. I was honestly a little worried that I had aged out of wearing sleeveless tops, but I’m so happy with how this looks. ❤️

It probably took me around 10 hours all up to make this, from cutting through to hand-sewing the buttons. That includes some time faffing about with my sewing machine tension, as well as unpicking and redoing the collar and a couple of the buttonholes to get them just right. I also pieced my own bias binding to minimise wastage. I have fabric to make another one and I reckon that’ll go much faster.

I’m actually shocked how the pattern lines up across the two fronts. I didn’t plan that at all, and I didn’t even notice it until I took photographs! And I adore how it looks from the back with the gathered yoke.

The print makes it a little hard to tell, but there are small gathers either side of the collar. The collar itself it a bit of a bodge, but it’s fine. The red buttons are freebies I picked up at the Inner West Knitters Guild meeting a couple weeks ago, and they matched so well! Very happy with this project. Super light for hot summer days too.

  • Victory!

After many many weeks of coming in 2nd, the Purls of Wisdom were at full strength tonight and romped home with two perfect rounds! 🏆

  • Crochet galah, by Eva

How cute is this? My friend Eva has been crocheting adorable native birds, which are available by commission or on sale at TITLE books in Barangaroo. We caught up last night at the Library and she brought me a galah! They are one of my favourites. I am entranced. So cute. ❤️

  • Lorrie Graham in Conversation

Last night we went to the State Library for a special event with Lorrie Graham, famed Aussie photojournalist, to accompany their excellent exhibition of her work. She was hosted by fellow photographer Mike Bowers and they chatted for the better part of an hour about her long career. They are both engaging and passionate about their craft. I found myself wishing though that Lorrie would spill a bit more tea about some of the celebrities and big personalities she worked with over the years! But as Rodd pointed out, she isn’t dead and presumably would like to continue to work with some of those folks.

There were several gasps as she talked about the indignities of being the first female photography cadet at Fairfax. She only got the cadetship after years of trying, and mentioned offhand that one of the excuses for rejecting her was “there’s no women’s toilet on this floor.” Once she got in, she mentioned being assigned to cover the races and having to wear a dress to get into the members’ area, only to be forced to climb up on a ladder to get photos of the horses in the final turn. News Corp photographers took pictures up her skirt and had them blown up into a poster. 😐 When she worked in London, she mentioned being assigned the paparazzi-like project of getting a photo of the first test tube baby. She had to pose on the street as a council worker for a week in the hopes of seeing the family out for a stroll. (She said she failed miserably.)

She talked a bit about the famous googly-eyed photo of Bob Hawke from the Opera House. Apparently it was never published(!!)—her editor felt it was “too strong”—so the only reason it’s well known is because over the years she kept telling people it was her favourite. As Bowers put it, the fact that she has taken iconic photos of two Prime Ministers is just next level. She reckons Keating still has her Ray-Bans. 😂

She talked about some of the challenges of taking photos in countries like Russia or Fiji (during two coups!) in the pre-digital days, where government officials were actively trying to confiscate photos and fiilm. She talked about the special equipment they had to use to try to transmit photos over the phone lines, and having to hide the machine in bushes when her hotel room was being searched. She said that at times she resorted to going to airports and approaching tourists to carry film back to Australia! Definitely a dangerous business.

She ended by talking about what an honour it is to have her archive housed at the State Library. Mike asked her what she thought about AI scraping up all their work and using it to put photographers out of business. She said it’s horrifying. It’s hard enough to make a career as a working photographer, and now news rooms can just slop out an image rather than paying someone for it. She said that’s why she’s thrilled to have her work at the Library, because at least there it will be protected and available to future generations.

The exhibition will be open for the next year, so I highly recommend you check it out.

  • Carnitas

Tacos with homemade carnitas (in the pressure cooker!) for lunch, because pork shoulder was on sale at Harris Farm. Much better than the Bowlo version. 😂 I know; we eat like damn hell ass kings. One of the advantages of knowing how to cook!

Three "street taco" torillas with pork carnitas, grilled capsicum, onions, salsa, coriander, and sour cream.
