Secret Stars: The Greatest Underdogs of the Rock 'n' Roll Era Paperback – November 7, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Secret Stars: The Greatest Underdogs of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Era tells the incredible true stories of the ten best bands and songwriters of the last sixty years that you (mostly) didn’t hear on the radio. For every band like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Nirvana or songwriters like Dylan, Hendrix and Springsteen who become iconic rock stars, there are bands and songwriters who are arguably every bit as talented… but you just haven't heard them or maybe even heard of them. YET. Secret Stars takes the reader on a journey through rock history to examine some of its best kept secrets like Arthur Lee & LOVE in the 1960s; Nick Drake and Big Star in the 1970s; Robyn Hitchcock from 1978-present as the Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians, and solo; Tanya Donelly, the Queen Bee of indie rock, who co-founded Throwing Muses, the Breeders, and Belly; Joe Henry, the closest thing to Bob Dylan in the last thirty-five years; Elliott Smith, one of the most influential and talented songwriters and musicians of his generation; Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices, an indie rock god and the most prolific songwriter of all time; and Drive-by Truckers, the most critically-acclaimed Southern rock band (and rock band from the South) of the 21st century.
Beloved by music critics, revered by their musical peers, and worshiped by their cult followings, these Secret Stars deserve to be regarded as major artists alongside their better-known brethren. Their music and this book are for people who care about music."What a great read. I learned a lot about some of my favorite artists that I already knew a lot about. And Matt weaved together super engaging storytelling in the process. A totally enjoyable page turner." (Rob Schnapf, music producer of artists including Beck, Elliott Smith, Guided by Voices, and the Vines)
"Anyone who's ever visited a record store multiple times in one day, anyone who's ever struggled to sleep at night on the eve of a new release day (am I outing myself here?) will recognize themselves in Matt Berenson's excellent Secret Stars, but anyone who's never done those things--who floats on the tide of Spotify's algorithm, excited to discover new music--needs this book as well. With an irresistible enthusiasm and passion, a jeweler's discernment, and with a delightful feeling of discovery, Berenson guides us through the shop aisles, radio dials, and sometimes-checkered histories of ten artists you should (and, I suspect, will) spend the rest of your life listening to. Secret Stars is invaluable." (Matthew Specktor, author of Always Crashing in the Same Car; editor, Los Angeles Review of Books)
“Put those Beatles and Stones records down! SECRET STARS illuminates the unfairly unworshipped Rock Gods, the ones deserving of much bigger cults. The book’s bracing message: We Never Knew How Amazing We Had It. A genius at exposing genius, Matt Berenson is a scholar who is not afraid to let his passion get in the way, blistering with joy for the music and wrath for many of these artists’ fates, deliriously enmeshed with tangy personal memories and unhealthy obsession.”(Daniel Waters, screenwriter of Heathers, Batman Returns)

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a great book to learn about new artists or discover new facts about bands you thought you knew. Matt does a great job or organizing the book with a chapter for each artist / band.
His suggested playlists at the beginning of each chapter also enhances the experience. Totally recommend for any music lover!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI thought I knew a good deal about the artists Berenson covers here. I could not've been more wrong. There are artists we all know & and love, and ones that might've flown under your radar. Each chapter of this book pulls you fully into the artist's world. There is background, context, subplots, and more.
It's clear that the author both knows his stuff and is having the time of his life. Every sentence pulls you to the next one, and I found myself in the weird spot of not wanting certain chapters to end.
Berenson has also taken the time to carefully curate a playlist to listen along to as you read. it all makes for an amazing experience. If you're a fan of music, history--or both-- this book is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSome clown said, "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture. It's a really stupid thing to want to do." Not so! Evidence here! Matt Berenson joins the ranks of the rare raconteur who can masterfully illuminate the very warp and woof of the subject at hand - in this case - extraordinarily beautiful music. With a handful of woefully underappreciated musical artists at its core, the author takes the reader on a journey beyond the tunes, by providing a soundtrack to creativity itself. Think Werner Herzog on directing. Bruce Dern on acting. Water Murch on film editing. The insights in Secret Stars resonate like those from a once in a lifetime teacher - that guy who knew everything - and knew precisely how to share it. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchasePerfect for anyone with a serious interest in rock music, especially alternative and indie. Even afficionados won't know all these bands, and it's equally fun reading about the ones you know and learning about the ones you don't. The commentary and analysis is great, featuring discussions of the artists, their music, and the reasons they never became popular despite being great. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWell-researched; written with contagious enthusiasm. The author draws paths to stupendous yet often-overlooked music. The author shares details that make listening even more enjoyable. A treat to read with a very long tale of enjoyment from what is learned. And for the artists already familiar to the reader, the author joins the reader in celebration of great music.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseVery informative read about some of my favorite bands. The writer is a fan on the same level that I am of these bands. The GBV chapter is unlike anything I’ve read about Uncle Bob. In depth! Mr Berenson also has a Substack that is great to follow.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAny music lover is all about discovery. There's nothing quite like getting turned on to a new artist and suddenly losing yourself down a rabbit hole... immersing yourself into a new musical world. Secret Stars is a roadmap to that thrill of discovery.
This book is written in such an approachable way. The author's deep love of music is apparent on each page. Each chapter starts with a curated playlist to listen to as you read. I did this for each of the artists and it creates a totally unique reading and listening experience.
The artists profiled in this book have compelling stories. Learning more about them helped me open my ears in a new way. Many of these artists are already finding their way into my regular listening rotation.
If you are or know a music lover you absolutely will love this book. Buy one for yourself and one for someone else... to spread the word and spread the music!
