The Heroic Legends Series - Conan: Lord of the Mount (Savage Tales Short Fiction Book 1)
Capturing the electric short fiction energy that led Robert E. Howard to be one of the top fantasy writers of the century, with exclusive serialized eBook stories starring Conan, Solomon Kane, and more by many of today's top writers in fantasy and sword-and-sorcery.
Awakening covered in blood, the sole survivor of a doomed raiding party, Conan sets out for the taverns, women, and ale of Trinnecerl. To reach the village, however, he must pass ruins scattered with the shattered helmets, broken blades, and bones of untold victims—as well as the hideous the creature that left them, the Lord of the Mount. Rapid-paced and bloody fantasy action written by Stephen Graham Jones, award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of The Only Good Indians.

Review
Praise for Conan and Robert E. Howard:
Howard’s writing seems so highly charged with energy that it nearly gives off sparks.
— Stephen King
In Howard's grim and all too realistic view, the barbarians are always at the gate, and once a culture allows itself to grow soft, decadent or simply neglectful, it will be swept away by the primitive and ruthless.
—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post
I read books, and I dreamed of Mars, and the planets in those books, and of the Hyborian Age of Robert E. Howard’s Conan books…
—George R. R. Martin, author of A Game of Thrones
Those of us who believed in Conan at the right moment in our lives never stop believing. We might not grow up to become him, but we never grow out of him, either.
—Stephen Graham Jones, author of The Only Good Indians
Praise for Stephen Graham Jones:
Stephen's writing is a chainsaw and every sentence in this book drips with blood, every paragraph is clotted with skin, and every period is a bullethole. He makes me feel like an amateur.
—Grady Hendrix, New York Times bestselling author of The Final Girl Support Group
At once an homage to the horror genre and a searing indictment of the brutal legacy of Indigenous genocide in America, Stephen Graham Jones’ My Heart Is a Chainsaw delivers both dazzling thrills and visceral commentary... Jones takes grief, gentrification and abuse to task in a tale that will terrify you and break your heart all at the same time.
—Time
Sneaking in right at the end of the summer is the best horror novel of the year... A loving homage to meta-horror classics like Scream and Cabin in the Woods. Hilarious at one turn and outrageously gruesome at the next, it’ll be the perfect book to read after dark over Labor Day weekend.
—GQ on Don’t Fear the Reaper
Stephen Graham Jones is a star when it comes to melding horror with literary fiction, exploring themes of colonialism and racisms alongside Indigenous experiences. He hasn’t been described as the Jordan Peele of horror fiction for nothing...

About the author

Born and raised in Texas. In Boulder, Colorado now. Forty-nine. Blackfeet. Into werewolves and slashers, zombies and vampires, haunted houses and good stories. Would wear pirate shirts a lot if I could find them. And probably carry some kind of sword. More over at http://demontheory.net or http://twitter.com/@SGJ72

Short, savage fun with a grin
Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2023A decent kickoff to this Savage Tales Short Fiction series from Heroic/Titan. I think this a good idea, so long as they keep the stories $2-2.50...and then eventually offer a print omnibus. As for this particular tale, Jones opens the modern telling of Conan's adventures with a cool sorcerous & monstrous foe. He also gives us an indomitable Cimmerian with excellent displays of mirth and LIVE!ism and mercenary intent -- a perfect S&S Attitude story!

Fast, Fun Read
Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2023I have been extremely excited about the new Conan releases that have been announced since Heroic Signatures took over the literary property (I think that is correct). I was especially excited to hear that Heroin Signatures would be releasing a story each month, over the next year, featuring Conan or another of REH's creations. I know many are displeased that the 12 stories are not being released at once and in print, but I think the idea of releasing a story a month, digitally, is a very smart move to appeal to the readers of today. I woke up this morning and the story was available on my Kindle. A short time later, the story has been read. Very satisfying. That said, if a print version of these stories are made available, I will buy it.
Regarding this initial monthly release, I enjoyed it immensely. It did take me a minute to adjust to the short story vibe, getting right to the point, but that was an easy adjustment and I was soon enjoying a very good Conan tale. I won't spoil anything, but I was happy that this was not a straight up hack & slash tale.
Now, I am patiently awaiting the next monthly Conan release, by John C. Hocking, in October (which will be an appetizer to the bigger release of Conan in the City of the Dead by Mr. Hocking, planned for release in 2024).
Heroic Signatures, keep publishing Conan stories, and I will keep buying them.

New Conan serial fiction
Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2023I thoroughly enjoyed this story. This is not the Conan pastiche I grew up reading. It is a Conan short story by a modern author writing in their own voice.
The story itself was fast-paced and entertaining. And what a great monster! The Lord of the Mount itself is a worthy addition to the catalog of monsters in the Conan universe.

In the spirit of Howard!
Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2023Lord of the Mount takes Conan to a remote mountain pass where he encounter dangers out of the weird past. Jones captures the snappy, action-packed prose of Howard, while maintaining his own voice, and presents it in the true pulp format—the short story. Very entertaining tale and I will be looking forward to the next releases in the Heroic Legends series!

Fun pastiche that understands the character
Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2023Conan is too often portrayed as either utterly amoral, or simplisticly direct, when he was neither. Although SGJ's tale, a loose riff on Beowulf, is not terribly complex, nor features any of the signature horror for which the author is known, he clearly gets what makes Conan whom he is and the action pulses. A fun, fast, read.

Fun, Quick, and Leaves You Wanting More!
Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2023This is the first Conan tale I've read that wasn't written by Robert E. Howard, so I was curious to see how another author would do in the lands of the Hyborian Age. I've read other stories by Stephen Graham Jones, so I was very excited to see he had written a Conan tale! Jones captures that same REH style of writing in this fast read. The story is lots of fun, and left me wanting more. Also, I'm glad Jones was able to work the word "thews" into the tale, by Mitra!

Abhi5 out of 5 starsPretty good "Conan vs beast" action story
Reviewed in India on September 29, 2023Conan Lord of the Mount is a new short story by Stephen Graham Jones featuring Robert E Howard's Conan the Barbarian
The premise is familiar, Conan is the only survivor of a raiding party and has to pass through a mountain pass haunted by a mysterious creature "Lord of the Mount" in order to reach civilization.
It is a pretty good story, the first 10 pages or so have a creepy ambience which is expected in a good sword and sorcery story and switches into good action writing.
If you're ok with e-book format, this is worth purchasing for the price.

Mr. S. Hopper5 out of 5 starsOff to a great start.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 26, 2023The first of Titan Publishing's new 'Heroic Legends' series- individually marketed ebook short stories, released sequentially, beginning at midnight last night. And yes, I did wait up and buy it at one minute past, do you need to ask?
The reason I was so keen to read this one, is that Stephen Graham Jones is an author whose works I bloody love. He wrote 'My Heart is a Chainsaw', which i would recommend to anyone who grew up, like me, with horror and slasher movies of the late 1970s and 80s. I'll read anything Jones writes, and when he gives us a new story featuring a character who may just be my favourite in all of fiction, well, let's just say I had high hopes.
Thankfully, he didn't let me down. While brief, 'Lord of the Mount' is a very good Conan story. Suitably violent, with the required amount of world-building, and the character is close enough to REH's original so as to not leave the reader distressed or angry. This is very definitely the same Conan we all love. At £1.99 for 45 pages (minus all the other bumf that comes with these things) of brutal and clever storytelling, you can't really complain.
The next one of these is out in October. I hope they do many more.

Amazon Customer3 out of 5 starsGeneric Sword and Sorcery
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 9, 2023I wanted to enjoy this but unfortunately it's a bit meh (am I still allowed to say that? I can't think of any better way of putting it). It reads like generic sword and sorcery, the fact that the lead character is called "Conan" is entirely coincidental. It's the sort of thing Michael Moorcock could have typed with his eyes shut after a three-night bender with Hawkwind.
