What if /Gellert/ was the /rebound/ guy?
Okay, so it's author approved canon that Gellert and Albus "got on like a caldron on fire", in the words of Bathilda Bagshot who was there those two months. Ms.Rowling didn't /say/ anything about Elphias, but she did write this, "I shall miss his friendship more than I can say", Elphias's words to The Public.
It's commonly written, I've lost count of the times this fanon has came up in fics addressing GG/AD and ED/AD, that Gellert broke Albus's heart, and then Elphias moves in to soothe him at the end of the summer. ...but what if Albus had loved Elphias first? There are all kinds of loves and neither of them had to be false.
There was a worsening pattern of sort;
1. Elphias and Albus plans to tour the world after they graduate, in spite of the problems at home (father in jail, mother left to care for a minor brother and an insane sister). Kendra dies, and then Elphias left.
2. Gellert and Albus plans to tour the world at the end of summer, in spite of the problems at home (father in jail, mother dead, only a minor brother AND an insane sister). Ariana dies, and then Gellert left.
Of course, what Gellert did was infinitely more heinous than what Elphias did. Gellert instigated the tragedy by torturing Alberforth, and then fled the scene. Elphias probably had no idea what was going on in the Dumbledore household, "secrets and lies", and he came back. Was that canon? Even if it wasn't mention, I think it's very strongly likely that Elphias did came back after Ariana died, to take care of Albus...and that's how Albus even manage to live through the whole thing instead of letting himself die.
Albus could have loved Elphias first, and that Elphias broke his heart first. Gellert knows about Ariana, at least at the end of the summer. I doubt that Elphias had ever been allowed inside Albus's house, both because Ariana had to be kept secret, and perhaps Albus liked to seprate Elphias, his boarding schoolmate, away from the tragedy of his family.
So yes, where are the fics in which Albus compared Gellert to Elphias during that summer? This has so much foreshadowing potential. Elphias struck me as the gentle sort who would have respected Albus's privacy...though unfortunately as much as Albus keeps his secret and lies, he needed someone to see through it. Then along comes ruthless Gellert, who doesn't ask permission, and makes Albus feels wanted. It wasn't until afterwards, though he would always remember that summer, that Albus realise the importance of someone who loves him in spite of things he couldn't say.
(...and perhaps Regina Spektor's "Samson" is much more an ED/AD song than a GG/AD (which would be Cold Play "The Scientist" which stresses going back to the past, as opposed to surrendering to a new beginning). GG did let go in the end, I believe he did let Albus win the duel, but he did it too late. Whereas "dogbreath Doge" let Albus sees his "weak side" from the beginning, by being with Albus even though others saw him as a weak follower, which he was not because he's in the Wizengamot and the Order of the Phoenix in both wars.)
...and who here is writing that King's Cross fic? OMG. Threesome or fight? I do have the lovely image of both of them braiding Albus's shiny hair.
