cynical & black humored with space ships
Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2015H. L. Gold wrote sci-fi that leans closer to the hardboiled and cynical than many of the genre's writers. His protagonists are decidedly in the gray area, working on slippery slopes and thin ice. They make deals with dark beings, cheat their way into getting space-business done, or use ancient magic moss to teach the world a lesson. Even the pure, angelic character of "He That Hath Wings" eventually succumbs to the way of the world.
As with any anthology, not every story here is great—a few are pretty forgettable, and a couple are just goofy, but most were decent enough sci-fi yarns that showed some imagination. Perhaps my favorite in the collection was "Someone to Watch Over Me," where a space freighter makes a connection with mysterious beings from hyperspace to win the heart of his long-time crush (which may or may not have inspired the Wally Wood piece used for the collection's cover).
