About the authors

Ray Douglas Bradbury was an American author and screenwriter. One of the most celebrated 20th- and 21st-century American writers, he worked in a variety of genres including fantasy, science fiction, horror, and mystery fiction

In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ray Bradbury, who died on June 5, 2012, at the age of 91, inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and close to fifty books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time. His groundbreaking works include Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. He wrote the screen play for John Huston's classic film adaptation of Moby Dick, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted sixty-five of his stories for television's The Ray Bradbury Theater, and won an Emmy for his teleplay of The Halloween Tree. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, among many honors.
Throughout his life, Bradbury liked to recount the story of meeting a carnival magician, Mr. Electrico, in 1932. At the end of his performance Electrico reached out to the twelve-year-old Bradbury, touched the boy with his sword, and commanded, "Live forever!" Bradbury later said, "I decided that was the greatest idea I had ever heard. I started writing every day. I never stopped."

Enjoyable short stories collected in one book.
Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2025This is a very enjoyable book with Bradbury short stories. You have a lot to choose from: prehistoric dinosaurs attacking a lighthouse to a murder drama and classic 50's sci fi. He is a great writer and I look forward to reading more from him.

unusual edition of Bradbury stories
Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2009Ray Bradbury's "The Golden Apples of the Sun" short stories have been around for quite a while. Bradbury is Bradbury, a gifted man with an extraordinary imagination, the lyrical writing skill of a poet, and the magic of a master story teller. His stories pull you intuitively into his worlds and carry you along to achieve what Hemingway advocated for fiction writers: that they become a part of our experience.
This hardbound edition is unusual in the way that it is beautifully bound. The silver and lime green cover and jacket design repeat within the text where the book title and the capital letters at the beginning of each story are colored the same green. Not a big deal, but nice.
And two of the stories are repeated at the end of the book in the form of plays, duplicated exactly in the form Mr. Bradbury typed them (like photocopies).
Highly recommended, easily worth the money, and then some.

Good collection with a few disappointments
Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2013I have been a Bradbury fan for many years. His prose is poetry. I frequently go back and reread paragraphs for the sheer pleasure of hearing the resonances of the words he chooses. I bought this collection on audio books. I would have preferred to hear the author himself reading, but the actor did an adequate job. The collection has some of Bradbury's best-loved stories, such as The Lighthouse and April Witch. (I don't have the table of contents in front of me so actual titles may vary slightly).
About half these stories are science fantasy (the author's own term), the others are mainstream. Many writers criticize Bradbury for writing with thin plots and I have to say this collection has some examples of that. A few of the stories are just situations without much happening at all. I actually fast forwarded through a couple--something I never imagined doing to a Bradbury story. His science fantasy stories typically have more "story" to them.
Bradbury is best when writing nostalgia fiction. Even his science fiction stories typically appeal to that particular emotion: people on Mars and Venus pining for the way things were on Earth, or struggling to recreate on some far-off world what people have managed to destroy here on Earth. There are some gems here that deserve greater than five stars, true classics such as The Sound of Thunder, but also some less-than-stellar pieces that would never have gotten published but for the author's unique voice (and possibly his name recognition). Overall this is a worthy collection though his 100-Best collection is probably the thing to buy.

Ray Bradbury is Legend
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2024I need to read a little Bradbury every now and then to be amazed. His writing is lyrical, the plots clever, short stories are bits of genius. I feel refreshed after every story.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️📚🍏🦋
My thoughts: 🌫🎺 The Fog Horn - I should have known better than to start this book at night. This was very suspenseful; I almost got scared. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
💐🧙🏻♀️💘 The April Witch - This one kind of reminded me of The Host by Stephenie Meyer. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
🔖Page 21 of 339 The Wilderness - I'm switching again, this is a daytime book, not scary, just a bit creepy.
🌎🚀🌌 The Wilderness - This was very good. I was disappointed there was more story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🔍🧽 The Fruit at the Bottom of the Bowl - It's a good thing this is an ebook because I needed the dictionary. Authors don't use just the right word as often as before, physiognomy, I liked it. Anyway, this story was very good even though I guessed the ending early on. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
🔖43 The Flying Machine - The last 2 stories were pretty good. I think Bradbury was ahead of his time. I want to continue, but I also want to finish my book before the meeting tonight, so I'm stopping here. I'm not excited about The Flying Machine, but I am anticipating The Murderer.
🪁🐉 The Flying Machine - I didn't like this one. Its obvious message feels dated for the 50s. I wish someone would do away with AI, so maybe it's a timeless message.⭐️⭐️⭐️
📻📡📞 The Murderer - This was disappointing for me. ⭐️⭐️
🔖58 The Golden Kite, The Silver Wind - I didn't like the last 2 stories much.
🍊🐖🪁💨 The Golden Kite, The Silver Wind - It was okay. There's a lesson here, but the foundation was thin. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
🚨🇲🇽 I See You Never - This was interesting but basic.⭐️⭐️½
🪡🧵 Embroidery - I almost reread this one, but I got it, so I changed my mind. ⭐️⭐️⭐️½
🔖71 The Big Black and White Game - These last couple of stories have been okay. I wish I could read this book straight through, but I keep starting at night or in the morning, and then the stories are draining. I need to start with full energy and free time.
⚾️🧔🏿🧔♂️ The Big Black and White Game - This was good, but of course, there were some animalistic remarks made, which made me roll my eyes. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
📨📬 The Great Wide World Over There - This was crazy in an old-fashioned way. I kinda enjoyed it, but the ending was lost on me, so I'll have to think about it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🔋⛪️ Powerhouse - Meh. ⭐️⭐️
🙇🏽♂️🙇🏽♀️🙇🏽En La Noche - Weird. I didn't care for it. ⭐️⭐️
📸🌤 Sun and Shadow - This was kinda funny. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
🔖119 The Meadow - This portion has been very interesting. I'm breaking for family time and rejuvenating my mind.
⚒️🔨 The Meadow - I didn't get this one at all. ⭐️
🗑 The Garbage Collector - Ugh! I'm sure it has a deep meaning, but he lost me at the mention of the fly babies. ⭐️
🔥💍 The Great Fire - Meh. ⭐️⭐️
🍏☀️ The Golden Apples of the Sun
🚀👨🚀 R Is for Rocket - It was boring at first but then it got better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
🛰🌌👨🚀The End of the Beginning
🚀The Rocket - This was a nice family story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️½
👨🚀 The Rocket Man - This was interesting but bland overall, but for the 50s I get it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
🔖203 A Sound of Thunder - After all of the similar stories about astronauts and rockets I need a break.
🦖 A Sound of Thunder - That was interesting and unexpected. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🔖216 The Long Rain - I plan on finishing this today. I'm only stopping because I need to drive.
🌧The Long Rain - This reminded me of Survivor when their hands and feet are white from the rain, plus After Earth. It would make a good horror movie. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🦇📚The Exiles - I wonder if Justin Cronin read this because I can see bones of The Passage. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
🌍🐅Here There Be Tygers - Weird story but very interesting. Would have made a nice Star Trek episode. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
🍓🪟The Strawberry Window - Half of this book is about Mars and rockets. ⭐️⭐️½
🐲The Dragon - If you blink, you'll miss it. ⭐️½
❄️🔥🤱🏼Frost and Fire - Trippy! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
🧚♂️Uncle Einar - This was surprisingly good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
⏳️📠👴🏻The Time Machine - Not Bad. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
🔊☀️🏃♂️The Sound of Summer Running - This made me laugh. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I don't understand why, deep into the future, there are new technologies and life on Mars but no progression for women and Negros.
Recommend to others: Maybe there are some gems here, but a lot of the ideas are outdated.

The grand-master of storytelling
Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2015Ray Bradbury is an amazing author. He's best known for his science-fiction (The Martian Chronicles), but most of his work is fantasy or philosophical. This collection of short stories is a good example of the breadth of his style. He takes to places in imagination like no one else can.
His writing leaves you feeling good, or thoughtful. I thoroughly recommend this book. It's also an excellent book to get younger reader interested in reading. The short-story format eases them into the pleasures of reading without demanding a long commitment, and leaves them wanting more.

A magician his stories prose poems tiny ballets
Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2020I read these stories and marvel. Such art. They say Hart Crane the poet composed while listening to opera and smoking cigars. That sounds like a good synopsis/summary of this work. A series of tiny operas complete with characters, costumes, scenes and lovely, lovely music

An all time favorite book I rediscovered
Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2012I read this when I was about 11 years old, and recently found it's name by searching on a phrase I remembered within the book. It made a powerful impression on me as a youngster, and looking again at it now I see why. Bradbury's ability to forecast the issues in the future, the tensions, the degree of change, is brilliant. Wow.
