About the authors

In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ray Bradbury, who died on June 5, 2012, at the age of 91, inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and close to fifty books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time. His groundbreaking works include Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. He wrote the screen play for John Huston's classic film adaptation of Moby Dick, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted sixty-five of his stories for television's The Ray Bradbury Theater, and won an Emmy for his teleplay of The Halloween Tree. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, among many honors.
Throughout his life, Bradbury liked to recount the story of meeting a carnival magician, Mr. Electrico, in 1932. At the end of his performance Electrico reached out to the twelve-year-old Bradbury, touched the boy with his sword, and commanded, "Live forever!" Bradbury later said, "I decided that was the greatest idea I had ever heard. I started writing every day. I never stopped."

Ray Douglas Bradbury was an American author and screenwriter. One of the most celebrated 20th- and 21st-century American writers, he worked in a variety of genres including fantasy, science fiction, horror, and mystery fiction

Long out of print Ray Bradbury don’t let it slip through your fingers!
Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2025Released back in 1976 “Long After Midnight” was the last of Bradbury’s short story collections to be released ahead of his 100 story omnibus “The Stories of Ray Bradbury”. I this collection you’ll find a wide variety of Bradbury stories many first published in pulp magazines of the late 1940s and early 1950s if you’re new to Ray Bradbury this is the as good a start as any and if you’re a fan already you’ll be rediscovering some old favourite. The other important bit of info I can impart is that this volume has been long out of print so if you can find one grab it. Lastly take the thumbnails of the hardcover that appear to indicate a signed copy with a large grain of salt these are stock images that show up all ver the place online and don’t indicate you’re getting a signed copy.

Weaker but still solid Bradbury collection
Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2021Ray Bradbury has long been one of my favorite authors, and I've found myself eagerly devouring whatever short-story collections of his I can find. Due to this, I'm starting to hit a point where I'm ending up re-reading stories that have appeared in previous collections, though this is by no means a bad thing. "Long After Midnight" contains some of Bradbury's darker stories, and while I didn't enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed some of his previous work, it's still a fine collection with a wide variety of tales, ranging from the mundane to the fantastic.
There are many stories to be told in this collection, and many characters to get to know. There are two astronauts searching Mars for a fabled blue bottle, a boy and his aunt who pick up a strange and dangerous hitchhiker, another boy who seems capable of performing miracles, a man who decides to vent his anger at his wife by murdering her robotic double, a parrot who knows the plot to Ernest Hemingway's final unpublished novel, and many more. Whether set in one of Bradbury's more familiar locales (Green Town, Mars, Dublin, Mexico) or elsewhere, each of these stories takes us to a world both familiar and shockingly new, and both entertains and unsettles us along the way.
I'm in love with Bradbury's writing style. Yes, some people have described it as "purple" or "flowery," but I'm a sucker for that kind of writing (provided it's not overdone), and Bradbury is one of the best at giing us writing that's lovely without overdoing it. He makes us look at the foibles of life and civilization in a new way, and even if his stories don't always end happily, they're usually quite unforgettable.
That said, none of the stories in this collection stood out enough to wow me and become an instant favorite. None of his classics or stronger stories are featured here, and sadly a couple of them are outright problematic. The title story's ending will probably feel downright cringeworthy were it published today, and there's one story about a boy in love with his teacher that I found more creepy than sweet. Perhaps that's me being too nitpicky, but I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling this way...
"Long After Midnight" is not one of Bradbury's stronger collections, but it's still a good read, and even a weaker Bradbury collection is still pretty strong. If you want an outright superb collection I would suggest "The Golden Apples of the Sun" or "I Sing the Body Electric," though if you're a Bradbury lover this one is still well worth your time.

Another hit.
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2015These are all good Bradbury stories. Well written, as usual. The narration is clear and easy to understand, even over the noise of other cars and traffic.

papergrub3 out of 5 starsa story a son's love of his father who is raised from his grave ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 28, 2015This collection of Mr Bradbury's short stories was taken from a range of magazines and so reflects the differing tastes of the magazine readers. So for "Woman's Day" we have "The Wish", a story a son's love of his father who is raised from his grave so that they can say they loved each other one last time (silly and sentimental). From "Collier's Magazine" we have "One timeless spring" and "Pumpernickel", both with the recurring Bradbury theme of growing-up. Another silly tale from "Playboy", "The parrot who met papa", is about a parrot who has memorised the last unpublished book by Hemingway. It's all rather tedious, as could be expected from work made to order for such a range of magazines, I prefer the classic Bradbury of "Something Wicked This Way Comes" etc. Having to write to pay the bills does not always result in decent literature. Tedious.
