    5 out of 5 stars
    Went past 9hrs.
11/25/2022: I read some negative reviews about the candle burning out before 9hrs. I did a small controlled experiment. The setting was inside my Florida house: inside temperature was between 73-75*F (22.7 - 23.8*C), low humidity, no running fan or wind blowing. After the candle was lit for 9hrs, I wasted the next 1hr 35mins 22sec to see when this will run out. (1x) plain white (non-fancy) UCO factory candle lasted 10hrs 35mins 22secs. Well past the 9hr claim (Please see enclosed picture). I took the candle into a dark room and it did a decent job of providing soft light. For some of you who complained about the candle being dim… you probably did not allow your eyes to be adjusted to the dark or stared at bright light. Wait 30min for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. That lit candle emitted plenty of light to see in a 15x15’ room. And for those that complain about a little wax dripping… you can easily clean it out by lightly scraping it out or place it in a little cup of hot water. The lantern does breakdown into pieces for cleaning. Some people are either entitled, too lazy to clean, or love to complain about everything. O_o ** For my next update, I will field test the 9hr citronella candle when I go hammock camping in the Florida woods (or my backyard). I’ll include the weather conditions in my next review. So far, great little product. Lightweight, compact, and easy to use… so far.

This lantern is so simple and so cool. Really light and very small. Can even keep it in my pants pockets. Glass seems quite stable though it’s glass so if you’re not careful it’ll break like any normal glass ever made so hopefully the people complaining about the glass think it through a little. It’s not Pyrex or safety glass so it will break. Though I think they should have made it from Pyrex I have no idea why they didn’t as it’s superior to regular glass in every way. What ever though as long as you don’t drop it on hard ground or something you’ll be fine. Has a nice dim light perfect for when your eyes have adjusted to the dark. Still haven’t tested it in my tent as a heat source as I’m a little worried the heat from the top will melt my tent. I’ve seen videos of people doing it and leaving it on all night and it looks safe enough. Just gotta make sure you have the tent well ventilated so you don’t asphyxiate yourself while you sleep. It produces carbon dioxide (not carbon monoxide which people seem to confuse it with) and you also produce carbon dioxide while breathing making it a slight hazard if you have all the tents vents closed. Still with only 1900 btu of heat you can’t expect it to do all that much in a larger tent. In a tent that’s around 40 square feet and 4 feet high (standard 2 person tent) thats well ventilated you will need around 3,400 btu of heat to get the temperature to around 70 degree and maintain it. Still that little lantern will make a big different producing more than half the btu needed to heat your tent. Anyways awesome lantern been using it in my room at night to read even though I’ve burned myself a half dozen times accidentally touching the top plate. Still getting used to having a candle lantern.

Ive used these since the early 1990's for camping and backpacking lights. Since you should always carry redundancy items for light and fire starting this is a great option as a companion to a traditional flashlight. Theyre tough and put out a reasonable amount of light. In a small bivy or one man tent you will actually notice that your tent will stay drier and a tiny bit warmer. It works good in wind and even in light rain without issue. Its good for lighting small twigs to use as matches to light other things like a fire or a camp stove instead of using a match. The good beeswax candles last a long time though they are not cheap. Ive kept hot beverages warm by using a metal cup and setting it right on the lantern top. Ive still got the one I bought in the early 90's when they only came in aluminum and it still works great. Get a couple for summer camping or backyard bbq. Great for power outages and emergencies. They last a long time and are worth the cost.

I bought this unit heading into a blizzard. Living in an older home, the electricity can be a bit of an issue with heavy snows. While I have flashlights, and one on my phone, I prefer to keep those for when we need to move about the house or navigate outside during bad weather. I also don't like to deplete my phone battery by using the flashlight feature overmuch. I had been meaning to pick one of these up, but they were sold out the last time I was looking. I purchased the yellow model because it would stand out in the dark, and I find it to be a cheery color if I'm stuck in the dark. The packaging is simple, but nice. The powder coating is even and not patchy. Operation of this piece is intuitive, and it is nice to know that it comes with a candle installed and three (3) spares. The glass surrounding the flame is also comforting, from knowing that accidental blowing out is reduced, as well as issues with an open flame. The only thing I'm not 100% sold on is the wire handle. It is functional, but doesn't seem as sturdy as the rest of the unit. I'm not worried it will "break" per se, but it does come off as a bit of an afterthought. I would still purchase this item again for sure. I may even get the shade for it. (sold separately).

This is still a decent candle lantern, just not quite as good as they once were. This particular set includes a small felt carry bag, one lantern, 4 candles (3 spares in plastic bag and one in lantern), and a set of instructions. This particular lantern is what they call grey in China, but that we would know as black. Sadly, all of the UCO lanterns are made in China now. I have an original UCO lantern I've owned for 7 years that was made in the U.S.A. (as you can see in the side by side photo) that is still going strong and has never had a problem. Hopefully this new Chinese made lantern will perform as well. As of now the only issue with this new lantern is the candle sight on the side does not line up correctly with the view slot (see photo) but you can still see the candle.

Great little unit for our out of power time. Safe to use and is easy to setup, use, clean, and change candle. Does work well even in windy conditions.
    • Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2023
That’s the main thing I like about it. And it actually puts out more heat and light than one candle alone. Which is not much but still. Last winter I lost my electricity and was told it could last for hours. I live in WY and it was one of our colder nights. Just great!!! But what I had was about 45 scented candles. I put them all on the coffee table, lit them all. They put out enough heat to keep me and my 3 little dogs warm for a few hours. Power came back on and so we were saved.
I feel like if I had 45 of these little lanterns I’d be fine. But I’m not going to do that! That’s dumb. But… I think they would definitely do the job if they had to. Will work good for light though.
You have to unscrew the thing to blow out the candle. I guess that’s kinda positive huh? The thing would be good to go in a blizzard? I think so! Why would I be outside in a blizzard with only my little candle lantern???

This is a neat little light. I like how dead simple it is to opperate. The glass does get hot so be careful when in a tent. Not aa bright as led lights, I use it as a backup to traditional electric units as it will usually always work when the batteries run out. Also light weight for backpackers.

Not much else to add to what has already been said by thousands before me except to say that this lantern is legendary. This particular one is made of aluminum. There are various colors and accessories and you can buy the lantern in Bronze as well (the material not the color). The aluminum is lighter than the Bronze so it makes it easier to carry. It works incredibly well and the standard candles will last for 9 hours. Good for an emergency light and also to generate some heat. Comes with a handy chain to attach somewhere. This one even came with a reflector which I have not used or needed yet. It's meant to redirect light into a particular direction.

      One last thing to note:

Use the standard (white) UCO candles or the Citronella (Blue) candles. I can't tell how well the Citronella candles work for keeping the bugs away but both these candles work well for lighting. The Beeswax candles are a disaster. Yes the last longer but the gum up the spring loaded mechanism and after burning one candle you cannot just throw another in because the walls will be sticky and the spring mechanism won't work. You do not want to find this out on your camping trip. Stick to the white or blue candles and you will be ok.

Makes for a great component to your car survival kit, especially if you live in a cold climate.
Outstanding product. 5 stars. Would buy again.
