The Forever Dog: Surprising New Science to Help Your Canine Companion Live Younger, Healthier, and Longer Hardcover – October 12, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
#1 New York Times Bestseller
In this pathbreaking guide, two of the world’s most popular and trusted pet care advocates reveal new science to teach us how to delay aging and improve canine longevity, providing a long, happy, healthy life for our canine companions.
Like their human counterparts, dogs have been getting sicker and dying prematurely over the past few decades. Why? Scientists are beginning to understand that the chronic diseases afflicting humans—cancer, obesity, diabetes, organ degeneration, and autoimmune disorders—also beset canines. As a result, our beloved companions are vexed with preventable health problems throughout much of their lives and suffer shorter life spans. Because our pets can’t make health and lifestyle decisions for themselves, it’s up to pet parents to make smart, science-backed choices for lasting vitality and health.
The Forever Dog gives us the practical, proven tools to protect our loyal four-legged companions. Rodney Habib and Karen Becker, DVM, globetrotted (pre-pandemic) to galvanize the best wisdom from top geneticists, microbiologists, and longevity researchers; they also interviewed people whose dogs have lived into their 20s and even 30s. The result is this unprecedented and comprehensive guide, filled with surprising information, invaluable advice, and inspiring stories about dogs and the people who love them.
The Forever Dog prescriptive plan for optimal dog health focuses on diet and nutrition, movement, environmental exposures, and stress reduction, and can be tailored to the genetic predisposition of particular breeds or mixes. The authors discuss various types of food—including what the commercial manufacturers don’t want us to know—and offer recipes, easy solutions, and tips for making sure our dogs obtain the nutrients they need. Habib and Dr. Becker also explore how external factors we often don’t think about can greatly affect a dog’s overall health and wellbeing, from everyday insults to the body and its physiology, to the role our own lifestyles and our vets’ choices play. Indeed, the health equation works both ways and can travel “up the leash.”
Medical breakthroughs have expanded our choices for canine health—if you know what they are. This definitive dog-care guide empowers us with the knowledge we need to make wise choices, and to keep our dogs healthy and happy for years to come.
Inside this definitive dog care guide, you’ll find the tools and knowledge to extend your dog’s healthspan:
- A New Approach to Dog Nutrition: Learn what commercial pet food manufacturers don’t want you to know and discover simple recipes and tips to ensure your dog gets the vital nutrients they need for a long life.
- A Proactive Canine Wellness Plan: Tailor a prescriptive plan for your dog that focuses on diet, movement, and stress reduction, based on the latest science from top geneticists and longevity researchers.
- Environmental Health for Pets: Uncover how hidden external factors, from everyday exposures to your own lifestyle choices, can dramatically affect your dog’s wellbeing and contribute to chronic disease.
- Lessons from the World’s Oldest Dogs: Be inspired by stories of dogs who have lived into their 20s and even 30s, and learn the practical, proven tools their owners used to achieve remarkable health and vitality.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI happened to find this book in a bookshop window in a really cool downtown I was visiting on my birthday. It looked like a fun read so I bought it and it was INCREDIBLY educational, well written, and life changing. I have used and used this book. I brought out my book tabs that I haven't used since college because there is so much great info in this one book for your dog. If you love dogs, please get this book and read it. Learn and use it. It's been super helpful to even save money on vet trips (for minor ailments) and I do think that it will benefit them in the long term as well. I have recommended this book to everyone I meet that has any interest in dogs at all. I have given out copies as prizes for trivia because I think this book is so beneficial. This is in my top three animal books and I use it all the time to refer back to and re-learn something again. We can do SO much better for our doggos, and we should. The authors make it very easy to do and understand and the amount of citation to credible, legitimate resources is remarkable.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2026Format: AudiobookVerified PurchaseMy holistic vet recommend this book to me. I'm actually not even finished with it yet because I keep going back and relistening to parts, but I have learned so much already and it applies not only to my dogs, but to my own and my husband's health!
The authors present the information in a way that's easy to understand and retain. I bought this on Audible but ended up also ordering a printed copy because I want to be able to highlight and refer back to some of the info and I know I'll remember more reading it myself. I also bought a printed copy for my dog-loving friend. Amazon didn't have the print copies so I had to find them elsewhere and I paid a lot but this book is worth it!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2026Format: HardcoverVerified PurchasePurchased for a gift that someone wanted. They loved it!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe book had a rough start for me when I ran into the C word on page 2 of the intro. Fair warning, if you are just as sick of hearing people talk about what happened globally in 2020-2021 as anything more than a planned attempt by the globalists to take over the world. I was just as disgusted and horrified to see the WHO and Harari (p. 34) cited in this book as reputable sources. It appears the authors are blind to the evil, globalist agenda and their attempt to takeover our earth with their BS and man made viruses. Anyway, once I got beyond the horrible start, I enjoyed most of the book. The brunt of the book is a presentation of their scientific evidence to support their theory that the commercial dog food industry (specifically ultra processed dry dog kibble and canned dog food) has been cause to our pooches’ demise. I agree with them! And that’s why I read this book, after my dog passed away. Because I wanted to see proof of what I knew was wrong: dog kibble kills. Of course there are many other contributing factors in the longevity of the dog life, and the authors do elaborate on those. There wasn’t a whole lot of info on healthy flea/tick and heartworm preventative/treatment options unfortunately, and I cannot believe they never even mentioned diatomaceous earth!! Do they not know the immense health benefits of food-grade DE?! I have been feeding it to my animals for years as a de-wormer and source of added minerals. No heart worm meds needed. That missing piece of info astounded me. DE is cheap and plentiful (diatomaceousearth.com). I take it myself. Overall, the book was informative and confirmed what I suspected: that cooking for your dog is just as healthy for them as it is for you. I cooked my late dog’s food for the last 7 of her 14 years of life, but I never added vitamins/minerals/supplements to her food because I thought “If I don’t need to add them to my meals, why do I have to add them to my dog’s?” That wasn’t answered in the book. Why can’t I just feed my dog a chicken, rice, organ, broth, and veggie dinner and call that good? My body gets everything I need from eating that, so why would I have to crush supplement pills to add to my dog’s meal? Seems stupid. I live in the country and would let my dog outside to hunt and eat wild mice and rabbits every now and then (and fed DE to get rid of those intestinal worms) in addition to feeding homemade meals using meat from our farmed animals. Good read. I recommend to anyone who has a dog. Form your own opinions and listen to what your dog is telling you.

Dulce MendozaReviewed in Mexico on December 12, 20215.0 out of 5 stars El mejor referente para mejorar y conservar la buena salud de perros y gatos.

VeeReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 10, 20255.0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
Great book and great info! I bought this when it came out and I'm currently re-reading it. I plan on making further improvements to my dogs' diet (they're already on raw) and this book has tons of info on how to go about it.
This is my go-to for solid info and current data/research.
Even if your dog isn't on raw, this book is still relevant.
MaaikeReviewed in Spain on July 19, 20255.0 out of 5 stars A must have for dogowners!
I love this book! It takes time to read it, it isn't a book that you will read in one time but more a book you keep going back to, read a bit, search for info etc. I love the explanation and always share the knowledge with friends dogowners.
