A great Sci Fi speculative story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 June 2024Blake Crouch's writing is both technical/scientific and sentimental/moving. I've only recently started reading his later work. This is a great book about human genetics and speculate what might happen if the science is misused, or used with good intentions but has a drastic outcome.
I knew he was the author of Wayward Pines and it wasn't until the Dark Matter TV series (Apple TV+) I was reminded to go and read his work.
Recently I have had a problem with Amazon's algorithms. Searching for new & noteworthy still keeps pushing the same genre of books under my nose that I've recently read and it's really hard to break out of it. I am reading at the rate of 80 to 100 books a year but I have an eclectic taste. But it's very hard to find new novels that aren't just of a type that came before. That's a problem in society. As myself with my choices I don't want to feel like everything that exists is put before me, but find out actually all I see is merely a reflection of me and only me. So I am logging out of my accounts and attempting to listen to different podcasts, search out genres that I haven't read recently. So I have read few Blake Crouch books recently and thoroughly enjoying it.

Enjoyable but not my favourite book by this author
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 September 2023Upgrade was a slight downgrade from the other two Black Crouch books I've read, Dark Matter and Recursion. Not that it was a bad or unenjoyable book it was just a bit more of a gun fest than the first two.
The first part of the book hooked me in, I loved the concept. I thought it was interesting, although we've seen similar storylines before of people messing with genetics to create super humans, so it wasn't totally unique, but it was engaging.
The second part of the book though, became a bit of a bibliography of guns and other destructive weapons, and it removed me from the action too much, so it was less engaging.
Overall, it was a solid read but not my favourite by this author.

Very complicated
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 November 2024The idea of the book is great and it is quite exciting in places but the language used to describe genes and how they work in the body was far too complex for a layman like me! It was actually rather verbose and quite boring and I ended up glazing over and losing focus! I ended up skipping these descriptions and jumping to the action parts! This book has actually made me feel thick! Even the dictionary did not contain many of the genealogical and medical terminology!Still its premise was interesting and it had an exciting ending though I'm not sure if what he does will make any difference to the planet!

my 2nd Blake crouch and I’m growing quite fond
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 November 2023This book starts off a little slow and took me a couple of revisits to get fully into but once I did I couldn’t put it down. I really love the way crouch paces these thrillers. I also enjoy the nods to the sci-fi elements but that doesn’t become all encompassing. This story ultimately is about humanity and I really enjoyed his epilogue. As someone who is extremely empathetic and can feel sympathy for strangers. It opened my eyes to the fact that not everyone does and (considering what is happening in Gaza right now) is exactly what we need more than ever.
If you like Blake crouch, this is another hit in my opinion. Some of the themes have been done before I.e the movie Lucy. Things like that. But regardless the story twists and turns and the canvas he paints of the scenery transports you right there with the characters.
If it’s your first Blake crouch. Buckle up because it’s a great ride, I mean read.

Excellent as ever
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 December 2024Crouch delivers yet again. This is certainly up there with Dark Matter, Wayward Pines and Recursion. Well researched and well written with a masterful use of time jumps too.

Loved it
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 May 2025This is the 2nd of Blake Crouch's books I've read and it's a brilliant read. He's fast becoming one of my favourite authors.
I really enjoyed the subtle descriptions of the future in this book. It was a great story with a good pace. Would recommend to pretty much anyone.

Blake Crouch bends the mind like no other
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 September 20243.5 stars. This was such an incredible lol at the nature of humanity in a way that I wouldn't have expected before reading the summary. Acting as an allegory with a backdrop of science, Blake Crouch uses real science and makes it even more extraordinary. The way he writes characters is visceral which makes me care for them so deeply and I loved the sibling rivalry in the extreme. This is so, so clever. The plot is brilliant and although it followed quite a predictable path once the motives were revealed, I still are it up.

What if we could rebuild you...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 March 2023This was my first Blake Crouch book, but I'm already exploring his back catalogue, as well as looking forward to his future titles.
From the first pages, I was hooked. We follow the twists and turns of a futuristic adventure, a conspiracy and a potential world-breaking 'virus' that doesn't kill - it makes people smarter, stronger, optimised in every way. And their egos grow to match.
It's fascinating to watch our hero go from regular human to super-human, maintaining his basic ethics while being unable to stop himself viewing those around him as inferior. Like it or not, his system is faster, cleverer, better - so (in the same manner as Superman, almost) he has to moderate himself in order to fit in. But it's not quite enough...
I don't want to give too much away about the plot, but the writing here is absolutely stellar. Yes, this may have certain similarities to a recent movie of the same name, but it's absolutely it's own beast, and Blake Crouch explores alongside that road, treading new ground with relatable characters that gradually transform into something very different.
I was engrossed by this book and don't hesitate to recommend it. I definitely look forward to a potential movie!
This book was kindly provided to me as a Netgalley ARC, but the above opinions are entirely my own.

Reviewed in Mexico on 1 June 2023Muy bien escrito; Crouch nos da personajes sólidos, de carne y hueso. Un futuro distópico de alta probabilidad, enfrentando dilemas morales sobre el destino de la especie humana. Lectura fácil, que me llevó 4 o 5 horas.
