About the author

Dr. Caroline Leaf is a cognitive neuroscientist with a PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980‘s she has researched the Mind-Brain connection and did some of the initial research back in the late 80's showing the neuroplasticity of the brain. During her years in clinical practice and her work with thousands of underprivileged teachers and students in SA and Africa as a Communication Pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist, she developed an original theory of how we think as well as tools and processes that have transformed the lives of patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), learning disabilities (ADD, ADHD), autism, dementias, emotional mental health issues and has shown thousands of students and adults and corporations how to use their mind to detox and grow their brain. She currently teaches globally at conferences and churches and to secular audiences on these topics. Dr Leaf is also involved in the global ECHO movement training physicians worldwide on the mind and she has a panel of top neurosurgeons, neurologists, MD's, ob/gyn's, endocrinologists and neuroscientists that she consults and does research with. She has many YouTube, podcasts and video clips that she produces, reaching millions globally. Her passion is to help people see the power of the mind and the link between science and God as a tangible way of controlling their thoughts and emotions, learning how to think and learn and finding their sense of purpose in life.

So simple, scientific, and effective.
Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2024I have enjoyed Dr Leaf's books over the years, but this one is tops! If you are looking for a simple process to improve your thinking and your happiness in life this is it. It is not complicated. After reading most of the book, I went ahead and got the 3-day free trial of her app. That helped solidify the things that I had read in the book and gave me an understanding on how to do it. She does have a lot of scientific research in there on brain chemistry etc, but it is not complicated and is certainly reinforces the fact that we have the power to change our minds and thus the structure of our brain. Her You Tubes are also excellent. DR leaf is a Christian but this book does not have a spiritual focus, more of a scientific focus, but the principles seem harmonious with the word of God.

Excellent Book!
Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2025Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess by Caroline Leaf is an excellent book. Caroline Leaf's research on mental health and its prevention is genuinely remarkable. I learned so much from this book. Knowing someone who has struggled with anxiety and stress, I found Dr. Leaf's insights particularly enlightening. We are empowered to manage our thinking, which can cause the entire cellular structure to shift and bring balance to our mind, body, and brain. We could grow neuroplasticity and control our mental mess by reducing anxiety, stress, and toxic thinking. Dr. Leaf gave us five scientifically proven steps to follow: She gave us a 66-day challenge plan. Good sleep, routine exercise, following good or positive habits or routines, and mindful, nutritious eating play a big part in this transformation in the 66-day challenge. She was part of my book club live, and I followed her 66-day plan. I love this book and think it is a fantastic breakthrough miracle for people who believed they had no control over their brains and thoughts. This book is a power and a testament to how we can control mental diseases and live a fulfilled life. This book is a must-get book.

Practical strategy for changing thoughts and turning them into habits
Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2021I have often wondered why, when we know the right thing to do, it is so hard to actually do that right thing. We know all about eating right and exercise yet are overweight and sedentary.
This book provided me with the reason right action is so hard and gave me a strategy to develop it. Changing thoughts is hard work and changing thoughts is required for changing actions. It takes 21 days of mind management work, Leaf writes, to change a thought and 63 days to see that thought into action, forming a habit.
It's hard work to change but Leaf gives us the tools we need. This book contains a clearly defined strategy of five steps from toxic thought to beneficial action. She thoroughly explains the steps, gives suggestions how to complete each step, and gives examples from her own life. I really like that her steps and the transition that results have been verified by clinical trials.
I highly recommend this book. Cleaning up toxic thoughts and establishing a well being mindset is not easy work. It will become a daily practice. Everything you need for most work is included in the book, though Leaf does note that some trauma work may require the assistance of a professional.

Review to come
Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2023I’m going to be working out of this book with my therapist and so far what I’ve read is just blowing my mind. It’s amazing. The author who is a neurosurgeon is also a Christian, but she can associate functions of our brain with verses that are in the Bible, it’s just mind blowing and if you read it I am telling you, your think positively for the rest of your life. There’s a 21 day detox for the brain and we’re not having that cleanses or anything like that. We’re talking about exercise practice work at changing our thoughts not just daily, but continually throughout the day and until you’re asleep, don’t speak negative things into your life because negative is what you’ll get it’ll be what you expect. That’s just a preview so wait till I get into the rest of it and I will update this review. If you’re at all interested in how to expand your brain and use it to its fullest and use it to your benefit then read this it’s not rocket science even though she’s a neurosurgeon everything is in Laymans terms and you shouldn’t have any issues with that. Thanks for allowing me to do a half review at this point go get it hurry !!!!

Still missing details of five steps
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2021I was hoping that this would be the book where she'd explain in detail and with examples the five steps of the neurocycling process--which is her core recommendation and is at the heart of her work. I like the scientific grounding, but there is again surprisingly cursory attention paid to the actual steps. If I were her publisher, I'd tell her to significantly increase that portion of the book and slim down the rest. A lot more examples, a lot more stories would be helpful. Concrete, practical application of her method.

Life changing work
Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2023This book is proving to be life changing for me. I would highly recommend the app Neurocycle. I got it first and within days I could see the clouds starting to part and the sun peak through. The Neurocycle app is helping me clear mental clutter that I have experienced and been been controlled by for years. I talk and talk about these issues and no one ever understood including the one glazed eyed therapist I went to for a few visits. This work is helping me in all areas of my life. I bought the book secondary to starting the app as a way to get more context to what I was doing. I usually don’t like lengthy explanations of why something is the way it is but in this case I actually am using all this information. I plan to Neurocycle the rest of my life. I also plan to reread this book immediately to take in more.

Good information
Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2021Update
After reading this book for a week now. I am confident to say that it is good information but its way to repetitive. It's like Dr.Leaf is trying to convince me that her Neurocycle 5 steps work. But she does not teach how to use the steps in detail. It is almost as if she is trying to convince me to buy the NEUROCYCLE App that is like $70 a year for a subscription.
I understand her research and I know it is real but it's nothing knew. We all know the mind plays a huge part in our lives but no one really sits down to teach us how to control ourselves. And she doesn't do it either.
I really wanted to like this book more.
To all of you who want this book to change your life let me tell you it won't.
The information are only tools.
To have the change we need special attention and to follow a program.
Talk to a therapist. They will be able to help you directly in the spot of your personal issue.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 12, 2021I came across Dr. Leaf a couple of years ago through a presentation she did at Pastor Steven Furtick’s online church. It was a brilliant, insightful, practical presentation, dealing with mind related matters that every person alive on this planet would do well do incorporate into their lives. I subscribed to her app for a while too. Also follow her on YouTube - she has a wealth of material on there.
Anyway, I was excited when this book came out. She has a number of books. This is my first one. It is easy to read, has scientific knowledge in it, of course, but it is not bogged down with concepts that are out of an ordinary reader’s grasp. I haven’t finished reading it yet but based on what I have read so far, and based on Caroline’s previous work, I whole heartedly recommend everyone to get this book. It’s worth every penny I spent on it and more!
