商品の説明
Digitally remastered collection from the '60s Pop band. Every Mother's Son, best known for their Summer of Love Top 10 hit 'Come on Down to My Boat Baby', was born in Greenwich Village in the spring of 1966. Brothers Larry and Dennis Larden decided to fuse their folk background with rock elements, adding organist Bruce Milner, bassist Schuyler Larsen, and drummer Christopher Augustine to the mix to create a fantastic, Monkees/Turtles-esque pop outfit. Included here are their two Wes Farrell-produced, 1967 LPs: Every Mothers' Son and Every Mothers' Son's Back; the latter of which was even more creatively ambitious than their debut and has never before been issued on CD-until NOW! Also included is their only non-LP single, 'No One Knows.' the 16-page, full-color booklet includes rare, previously-unpublished photos, and extensive liner notes featuring the participation of original band members. Now Sounds.

2014年7月11日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みI first heard "Come On Down to My Boat Baby" back in 1966 when I was 12. I loved it. Unfortunately the local DJ rarely played it, so I only heard it a handful of times. What a great song! I never forgot it, and over the years wondered that unlike other '60s classics it never appeared on the various '60s collections like "Pebbles" and "Nuggets".
Recently I was making a compilation CD of favorite oldies for a friend's road trip, including such timeless tunes as the Woolies' "Who Do You Love", the Syndicate of Sound's "Little Girl", "Faces" by the Hangmen, "Double Shot of My Baby's Love" by the Swingin' Medallions, "Masculine Intuition" by the Music Machine, etc. One of the few songs I didn't have on CD was "Come On Down to My Boat Baby". I do have the 45 but my stereo has some issued making it too much of a pain to transfer it to CD. So I thought, "What the heck, let me see if it's available on CD." I was amazed to find that not only is it available, but this "one-hit-wonder" band produced 2 albums! Although I wasn't expecting much, maybe EMS's version of "Louie Louie" and some Beatles covers, but surprisingly there was no mention of cover songs and the reviews were positive, and anyway I would've paid $20 just to have a good copy of that one song. So I ordered "Come On Down: Complete MGM Recordings".
When it arrived, I was very pleasantly impressed with the musicianship of these guys! Not your typical 3-chord garage band! These are schooled musicians who sing in harmony and play their instruments very well. I'm reminded not only of the Monkees ("Didn't She Lie"), but the more complex tunes remind me of the Zombies ("What Became of Mary" and others on the CD) during their "Odessey and Oracle" period, as well as the Left Banke, the Kinks (Allison Dozer) and the Hollies ("Sally" and one other are somewhat similar to "Bus Stop" and "Stop Stop Stop" as gypsy-ish minor-key songs). Not every song is a winner in my book, and despite some outstanding tunes, "Come on Down To My Boat Baby" is still my favorite song, this CD is full of other treasures. I've been listening to it for almost a month now, and each time I hear it I find something else to love. It's a welcome addition to my music collection. I'd go as far as to say that any aficionado of '60s popular music has an incomplete collection without this marvelous CD. My 2nd-favorite song, after the title cut, is "Sally", a delightful account of discovering the fairer sex. And I'm so thankful to Now Sounds for putting the 2 Every Mothers' Son albums onto CD!!! Thank you!

2013年5月1日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みThis is a very nice collection of two albums and a bonus track on one CD. If it is only the one track you know, then perhaps you will be disappointed. However all of it sounds very nice, it is playing as I write this. Sound quality is good, if not excellent for content created way back in 1967. The sound to me is in the Pop Rock, up tempo bouncy side of the spectrum. A nice slice of the later '60s, organ sounds like it should for the period. It was the best that could be done at the time. After all, we have been to the moon and back several times since this was recorded.
So it is what it is. Every Mother's Son is not the Beatles, nor the Stones, just a clean cut bunch of guys that got together and had a good time, and recorded a few albums. Not an A level group, perhaps not even a B level band, but nice enough to be enjoyed for what it is. Are they all hits here, no. Did you expect them to be? Just pure fun music... as music was intended to be. If you are old enough to know of EMS you won't be disappointed. If you are collecting 1960's era music this will fit right in. They sound a bit like the Association to me, if that helps defining the sound. A nice enough addition to my collection.
Enjoy!

2012年10月9日に英国でレビュー済みNow Sounds presents the only 2 albums made by this short-lived, one hit wonder group who wrote a very decent hook laden, bouncy pop song, 'Come On Down To My Boat' - a deserved hit and their finest moment. 'Alison Dozer' pinches the riff from 'Til The End Of The Day'; 'Didn't She Lie' and 'I Won't' are from the same stable as 'Come On Down' but not as good. Unfortunately, the boys also dabbled in some unforgivable schmaltz: 'What Became Of Mary' is surely a contender for worst pop song ever. 'Brandy' sounds like someone had been over-dosing on The Byrd's version of 'Wild Mountain Thyme'. Their second album opens with a genuine burst of sunshine pop, 'Rainflowers'. The prevailing trend of psychedelics can be heard in the child-like 'Dolls Clock' and the groovy 'Put Your Mind At Ease'. The band's roots in New York's Greenwich Village is heard in 'I May Be Right'. 'The Proper Four Leaf Clover' approaches the heights of 'Come On Down To My Heart'. The doom-laden, heavy folk number 'Only Child' features an out-of place but welcome run of fuzz guitar. 'I'd Rather Be Wrong' would have been a hit for The Monkees.
The sleeve notes and pictures are a joy, and more importantly the re-mastering is glorious.
