This book highlights black girls and women doing great things daily in areas such as tech and the arts! It also contains affirmations and activities. The characters referenced are inspired by people who are still living. They represent the diversity of blackness and epitomise what it means to be an 'Everyday Black Hero'. It is an empowering read for any young, dark-skinned girl and will certainly leave a positive impact on every reader.

In a world where brown skinned people are constantly being told that they are hated and unloved, that they are lesser than, that they have to fight so much harder for anything that they want than their peers, it is easy to forget the positives. A lot of young black children have been exposed to the news and are aware of the consequences that racism may have on their lives.

The trauma that they face as a result of racism and ‘education or preparation for what lies ahead’ could lead to some young people giving up before they have even begun. Therefore, it is important to always qualify the toxicity of the world around us with empowerment and encouragement. So that we are not raising children who are dejected from the get-go. My experiences as a young black woman inspired me to write this book. To remind children that ‘black’ is not an ethnicity. Black people are doing great things all around the world. Even if they can not see the representation in their community, I hope that they can see it in this book.

From the vibrant illustrations by Oyinkansola Olotu, to the inspiring stories from many other amazing Black Women, “Everyday Black Heroes”, surely was a joy to read. Due to the climate of the world today, Felicia Oyewusi beautifully articulates that not only do Black Women matter, but they can dream big and shoot for the stars. This message is very crucial for the well being and mental health of our young black girls because everything is now easily available on the internet, good and bad, for everyone to see. It can be very overwhelming and discouraging when a young girl can hear and read many insulting and discouraging opinions of others, about her gender and the colour of her skin. Which is why, positive reinforcement must be made for the youth, and this book does just that. This book truly does deliver on providing positive and motivating affirmations, that all Black Women can hold near and dear to their heart. “Everyday Black Heroes”, truly will help the process in building and strengthening the next generation of many strong and confident Black Women.
