Estrogen Matters: Why Taking Hormones in Menopause Can Improve and Lengthen Women's Lives -- Without Raising the Risk of Breast Cancer (2024 Revised and Updated Edition) Hardcover – September 3, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
“Estrogen Matters will change your life.”―Dr. Mary Claire Haver, author of The New Menopause
"Estrogen Matters was my antidote to the misinformation surrounding menopause. This book should be the bible for every single person going through menopause.”―Naomi Watts
For years, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was the medically approved way to alleviate menopausal symptoms (ranging from hot flushes to brain fog) and reduce the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's, and osteoporosis. But when a large study by the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) announced, with national fanfare, that women taking HRT had an increased risk of breast cancer, women were scared off, and the treatment was abandoned.
Now, Dr. Bluming, a medical oncologist, and Dr. Tavris, a social psychologist, reveal the true story of the WHI’s efforts to distort their data to exaggerate unsupported claims of estrogen’s harms. Important updates in this edition include:
- Evidence that demolishes the WHI’s claim that HRT causes breast cancer.
- A list of the WHI’s retractions of their original scare stories.
- Updated findings on estrogen’s benefits on heart, brain, bones, and longevity.
- A critical review of the alternative products and medications being marketed to treat symptoms of menopause.
A sobering and revelatory read, Estrogen Matters sets the record straight on estrogen’s benefits, providing a light to guide women through this inevitable phase of life.

Review
“Estrogen Matters unravels the intricate web of science, medicine, and gender politics surrounding estrogen therapy. In their unflinching exploration, with meticulous research and a fearless examination of medical dogma, Drs. Bluming and Tavris illuminate the complex terrain of estrogen's effects on women's health. The result is an excellent resource for women.”―Peter Attia, MD, author of Outlive
"Estrogen Matters was my antidote to the misinformation surrounding menopause. This book should be the bible for every single person going through menopause and every single doctor out there.”―Naomi Watts
"How could one flawed scientific conclusion become a persuasive juggernaut that changed the practice of women's health worldwide? In their fascinating account, Bluming and Tavris challenge that conclusion and unpack the reasons for its remarkable impact."―Robert B. Cialdini, author of Influence
"Given breast cancer's substantial morbidity, mortality, emotional toll and the vast consequences of its treatment, the frontal salvo on the conventional wisdom of estrogen use by Avrum Bluming and Carol Tavris is refreshing and welcome. The book will stir a lively debate about the merits of decades of existing clinical research on estrogens and help reframe the way clinicians and patients view the tradeoff between the benefits and risks of hormone therapy."―Jerome P. Kassirer, MD, Distinguished Professor, Tufts University School of Medicine; Editor-in-Chief, New England Journal of Medicine
"This is such an important book, I want to do all I can to encourage every woman to read it. Groundbreaking and carefully researched, Estrogen Matters provides essential information about the many benefits of estrogen at menopause and even after a diagnosis of breast cancer. It reveals the misinterpretation of study results that led women (and their doctors) to have unwarranted concerns about estrogen use. The thoughtful information presented here will help women feel more comfortable taking estrogen, leading to healthier, longer lives for many."―Patricia T. Kelly, PhD, specialist in cancer risk assessment and author of Assessing Your True Risk of Breast Cancer
"This book is long overdue, and I salute the authors for their courage and effort (and their clear, witty writing). I believe it is an ethical imperative for all clinicians who treat women in menopause or women with breast cancer to alert their patients to this book. It will not only improve women's quality of life, but also, on balance of probabilities, extend women's lives by delaying death from all other causes."―Michael Baum, MD, professor emeritus of surgery and visiting professor of medical humanities, University College London
"Once considered a veritable fountain of youth, estrogen replacement got a bad rap with the Women's Health Initiative study. This book is an exhaustively researched and meticulously reasoned vindication of hormone replacement therapy. Estrogen matters: it's the most effective treatment for hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause, and when started early and used continuously, it has important health benefits and can actually prevent some of the adverse events it was thought to cause. Bluming and Tavris tell estrogen's story in a way that is both accessible to the general public and appropriate for professionals. What's more, they provide valuable insights into understanding research and how even the best randomized controlled studies can lead to unjustified public fears and injudicious clinical recommendations. Very enlightening!"―Harriet Hall, editor, Science-Based Medicine
"Well written, insightful, and hard hitting, Estrogen Matters successfully rebuts the billion-dollar, government-led study known as the Women's Health Initiative, which claimed that hormones for post-menopausal women are harmful. That study was wrong. It turns out estrogens do matter for women's health."―Vincent T. DeVita Jr., MD, Professor of Medicine, Yale School of Public Health and Yale Cancer Center
"This book is long overdue. Having spent over two decades advancing women's health, I was appalled by the Women's Health Initiative's efforts to sensationalize and distort their own findings to promote an anti-hormone-therapy agenda. Personally I have been taking HRT for over 25 years and have no intention of stopping. I hope Estrogen Matters draws enough attention to counter the fears and misinformation about HRT that so many women, and their physicians, still hold."―Phyllis Greenberger, MSW, former President and CEO of the Society for Women's Health Research
"If you're one of the many menopausal women who reflexively avoid hormone replacement therapy to treat your symptoms because of all the scary headlines, this book is a must-read. The authors deftly cut through the hype to build a strong, well-reasoned case for challenging the current accepted wisdom."―Jennifer Ouellette, author of Me, Myself and Why and The Calculus Diaries
"For far too many years women and their doctors have been held in fear of prescribing estrogens -- believing that they were dangerous because of a widely quoted study purporting to show that they were too damaging. Now it turns out that this seems to have been an example of 'fake' news. In a thorough, careful, and unbiased assessment of all the scientific evidence, Bluming and Tavris debunk this most widely quoted work and show that estrogens are not only not dangerous but beneficial for the vast majority of women suffering from post-menopausal symptoms, whether or not they have had breast cancer. This extremely valuable message deserves to be widely disseminated."―Lord Turnberg, former President of the Royal College of Physicians
"If you are thinking about trying HRT, you should read this book. If you are nervous about taking HRT, you should read this book. If you have a history of breast cancer in your family, and that makes you nervous to take HRT, you should read this book.”―Joanna Strober, Founder of Midi Health

- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2025Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseExcellent book. So informative based on data and science, which is not only refreshing but reassuring. This book has given me the knowledge I need to advocate for my health and make informed decisions going forward.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2025Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI learned so much about the way medicine-specifically estrogen-is researched and sometimes politicized. The authors discussed the research results in a way I could understand and use to make my own decisions about the benefits and risks of using estrogen. The importance of estrogen in a woman’s body is much clearer after reading this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2026Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAlthough the book includes references to clinical trials and medical terminology, I found it easy to read and understand. I would recommend this book to all women. This book offers clear, thoughtful answers to many common questions about HRT.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2019I just finished reading the book, Estrogen Matters, and found it to be very interesting. I have been taking bioidentical hormones for about 10 years, and I agree that estrogen matters, a lot. However, Dr. Bluming recommends taking Premarin and Provera. In case Dr. Bluming isn't aware, Premarin in a dosage of 0.625 mg. comes at a cost of $192.14 for a one-month supply, and that's not including the cost of a progesterone which is also necessary if a woman has her uterus. I have my bioidentical hormones made in a compounding pharmacy, which has worked very well for me. The information provided in the book, Estrogen Matters, is very much appreciated, particularly on bones and brains, and I agree with what the book has to say on these important concerns. Most women are in a difficult position when they become menopausal. It's either take hormone replacements or suffer from hot flashes, bone loss and Alzheimer's, all to come sooner or later. Women's bone loss starts as soon as menopause begins; that is, in most women. All this can be helped by taking hormones, and I agree that taking bioidentical hormone replacement has been a great help to my health. At age 70 (I entered menopause at age 53) I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. So I started taking bioidentical hormone replacement, even though I had a very difficult time finding a doctor who would prescribe them for me. I did locate a doctor who was listed in one of Suzanne Somers' books, but I had to drive 6 hours one way to his office. When I started taking bioidentical hormones (estrogen and progesterone), my bone scan showed my BMD in my lumbar spine to be .637. Through taking bioidentical hormones since 2009, my BMD in 2017 was .956. I exercise every day, eat well, and I credit bioidentical hormones with the improvement in my BMD where it is now. I am so grateful to Suzanne Somers and her books for the information she and doctors she interviewed provided for me and for women. I am grateful to Dr. Bluming and Carol Tavris for providing the information they provide in Estrogen Matters. I would like them to know that bioidentical hormones are very helpful, even essential for my bone health. I also at one time took Premarin and Provera. I did not do well on Provera or on any progestin. I have had absolutely no problems with taking bioidentical estrogen and bioidentical progesterone. I think Premarin is too expensive for most women. Health care and pharmaceuticals seem to be available only for the rich. This is not right.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2025Very informative and easy to read. A bit dry but then again what is exciting about estrogen! Haha
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2024I believe every woman 35 (that's when your hormones start decreasing) and up needs to read this book if she wants to have a good quality of life (avoiding diseases of hormone deficiency) for as long as possible. I'm buying this new edition because I'm always lending out my current copy to the women I know. This book is written by Avrum Bluming MD who devoted his life to breast cancer research and caring for patients, and Carol Tavris MD who is an also distinguished science (among other subjects) writer. The writing is so clear. The facts so solid. Look up their names and listen to interviews with them. Take this book to you GYN (who probably is totally clueless and thinks HRT is poison).
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024I heard about this book while listening to an interview concerning HRT. I had heard about the Women’s Health Initiative study just like
Most of the rest of the world, and also hadn’t heard the follow up revelations that were uncovered. What was written in this book I also found while researching via other avenues and Decided to go on HRT. What a huge change in my quality of life! My hot flashes are gone! I sleep 7-9 hours a night again. Now if I can lose weight I’ll be all set, the fact that I sleep at night should help with that, since I now have energy. MY THANKS TO THE AUTHORS and my doctor!!

Edzia C.Reviewed in Mexico on July 20, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Buena información acerca de la terapia de reemplazo hormonal
