Super Friends: The Complete Series (Blu-ray)

I have been waiting for years for the complete Super Friends to come out on Blu-Ray, so I got it as soon as I was able and am glad I did.

This Blu-Ray collection contains all of the series produced by Hanna-Barbera on Saturday mornings ranging from 1973 to 1986.

The series are:

Super Friends! - 1973 to 1974 (beginning series with Wendy, Marvin & Wonder Dog as sidekicks)

All New Super Friends Hour - 1977 to 1978 (introduced Wonder Twins and "Guest" heroes)

Challenge of the Super Friends - 1978 to 1979 (introduced Legion of Doom)

World's Greatest Super Friends - 1979 to 1980 (back to basics)

Super Friends - 1980 to 1983 (split into 3 7-8 minute story lines and introduced El Dorado)

Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show - 1984 to 1985 (introduced Firestorm & Darkseid)

Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians - 1985 to 1986. (introduced Cyborg and redesigned Hall of Justice).

Coming from someone who grew up watching these shows from back when they were first aired, I can say that every episode of every series is here. Some have said this collection is incomplete, but it's not true. In fact, this collection brings in some episodes from the first series that I haven't seen for many years. There are also the "lost" episodes from 1983 that were produced after the series was canceled and didn't air for many years. They're most certainly all here.

As for each series, I think they start out slow, build up to a pinnacle and then go down. The first series is probably the most juvenile as Hanna-Barbera was trying to keep up with their Scooby-Doo momentum and keep sleuthing teenagers and silly dog comedic relief in their shows. All New Super Friends Hour was better but interrupted a lot with PSA's and crafts instruction aimed at kids. Most kids are there for the heroes and don't really need Superman telling them not to smoke or Aquaman showing kids how to make a tambourine out of paper plates. Challenge of the Super Friends and World's Greatest Super Friends are the pinnacle of the series as they went towards more mature and more engaging story lines. The remaining series were really good, but quality went down by the time they changed the name to Super Powers Team (they were keeping up with the Toy Line that was out at the time).

The package is fine. The picture and sound for episodes are really great. I did notice that English Captions was incorrect for at least one of the episodes, but otherwise appears to be fine (haven't had time to check every episode). One down point is that there is no booklet or any listing of the episodes on the discs. The discs are labeled with the series title and the years, but that's it. If you want to know what specific episodes or even special features are on the discs, you have to insert each disc and see for yourself. With 16 discs, that will take a while.

All in all, fans of Super Friends should really get this collection. Not only will you enjoy the nostalgia of watching these Saturday morning favorites again, but it will be really good for your kids and grandkids. (Small warning as a couple of the episodes may be scary for young kids. The one where they meet Dracula and the one where the Legion of Doom calls on Zombies are fairly creepy) You may want to keep an eye on the price as it's been fluctuating from time to time and you want to be sure to get the lowest price you can, but it will most certainly be worth it in the long run.

Super Friends was a show I watched in my youth… it introduced me to super heroes including my favorite, Green Lantern. The show even covered his origin! It got me into collecting comics and made me the nerd/geek I am today… This show is very entertaining and fun to watch! I highly recommend it!

Watching the Super Friends on Blu Ray is astounding !!! The images are definitely cleaned up but not excessively so. The colors and sharpness are glorious !!! Sound quality from the DTS-MA soundtrack is excellent and clean. These discs do contain some of the special features that were included in the original DVD releases. This set is an absolute must-have !!!

Came fast and plays great! The quality is perfect! The Blu-Ray is worth the money I paid! Puts the old DVDs to shame. If you have the old DVDs and want a serious upgrade, then you need to get this Blu-Ray set!

This new set includes all the Hanna Barbara cartoons made under the Super Friends banner from 1973 to 1985.

This is the best these episodes have ever looked and Warner did a fine job transferring what looks like the original animation elements to blu-ray. This does not look like a video tape transfer as the old DVDs were.

That is the good. The bad of course is how cheap and sloppy the animation was from Hanna Barbara. There are animation mistakes and typos everywhere and the blu-ray just makes it easier than ever to see these problems.

The writing is also pretty cheesy, but these were meant to be Saturday morning fare for young children and they get the job done in that respect. If you have nostalgia for watching these on Saturday mornings you will enjoy what all 16 discs has to offer. The collection discs are packaged together in a clear plastic case. I have no issues with the packaging. It is compact and at least it isn't terrible paper sleeves that scratch the discs and get glue everywhere as they fall apart. My set was not broken during shipping and arrived in great condition.

I highly recommend this set for anyone that watched them as kids and want to see them again. For anyone new to the series it is probably not going to live up to expectations. The 2000's Bruce Timm Justice League is recommended for anyone that wants good writing and animation.

Saturday mornings are back!!!! All the superfriends in bluray for remenising of growing up. So many memories.....And the bluray is sharp!

I’m very delighted with this DVD set. I wish it had a digital download as well and for 16 discs, the price isn’t bad. Highly recommend this set if you are a DC fan. Old school cartoons are the best.

I was hesitant to spend the money on the Blu-ray version of this collection, but I'm glad I did. I'm only on disc one but the colours look gorgeous and the quality of the print is awesome. I couldn't be happier.

Keep in mind the photos I supplied were taken on a Samsung tablet and don't do the cartoons the justice the deserve.

My only complaint is the case I received has a small chip in the corner. Amazon should use boxes to ship something like this. Padded envelopes are insufficient sometimes.

This is without a doubt the worst case I've ever come across, horrible, just horrible. The discs are gorgeous, the picture is amazing, MASSIVE upgrade over what I've seen before. Just get a different case, I got 2 6 disc holders and 1 4 disc.
