Pop Up Pirate! promises hours of amusement. After all, who doesn't like to see a pirate get shot out of a barrel? The game is simple. The unlucky pirate is pushed into the top of a brown plastic barrel, readying the spring mechanism for his eventual launch. Players then take turns pushing colorful plastic swords into holes on the side of the barrel, one by one until finally someone releases the spring and sends the poor little pirate on his way. Whoever makes the pirate pop loses, until the next round at any rate. The game includes a blue plastic base, the brown barrel (the sort that pirates would use for grog), and 24 plastic swords--six each of yellow, red, green, and blue. There's also lots of stickers of birds, smiling sharks, and even an ogling octopus, although they don't stay stuck very well. The pirate himself has a big black mustache and wears an eye patch and a purple plastic scarf over his head. Luckily, he doesn't seem to mind getting jounced around so much, since he also has a gigantic, if somewhat cautious, grin. --David Morel

    Cute, easy game
This is a cute game that’s easy to play for even young children. My 18 month old and 2 year old both find it enjoyable. We can talk about the colors and counting while we play and it’s always exciting and unpredictable when the pirate pops up. It does feel a bit cheap but it IS cheap in cost so it’s totally ok in my mind. So far, it’s worth the cost.

My 4-year-old grandson just started getting into games, so we were looking for something age-appropriate—and this was a hit! He loves playing with it, and it’s definitely suitable for younger kids. No assembly required out of the box, which is a win. You just separate the swords from the plastic and you’re good to go.

This is actually a rerelease of a game I played when I was a kid, and honestly, not much has changed—which is kind of the charm. Same basic setup, same suspenseful pop. It’s nice to see a classic still holding its own with a new generation.

Now, I’ll admit: I had a moment trying to figure out how to get the pirate into the barrel. There are no real instructions aside from a note on the box that says “twist the pirate in place.” Turns out, there’s a notch inside the barrel you need to line up with the base of the pirate—then twist to lock him in. Once I figured that out, smooth sailing.

When the pirate pops out, it’s not exactly dramatic—don’t expect him to launch across the room. But for a 4-year-old, it’s just the right amount of surprise, and my grandson laughs every time.

No batteries required, which is great. One small downside: there’s no built-in storage for the swords, so you’ll either toss them back in the box, find a little container to keep them together or keep them stuck in the barrel but if you go that route the barrel will not fit back in the box.

One note for parents—if you're hesitant about the whole “sticking swords in a barrel to stab a pirate” concept, there are other themed versions out there like Bluey or Super Mario that might feel a bit more playful and less pirate-pokey. Same game, just a different vibe.

Overall, it’s a simple, engaging toy that’s perfect for young kids. Great value for the fun it brings!

Great family game we play it at home and on camping trips! The only issue we have is that sometimes we end up filling all the empty slots only to discover that it had been jammed at some point and have to go back and wiggle each sword (already pushed all the way in) to try to set it off and pop the pirate. The kids, cousins, and grandparents all think it's fun to play on any day.

Pop Up Pirate is one of those games that almost everyone remembers, and it’s great to see that it’s just as fun now as it ever was. We bought it for our five-year-old, who loves getting everynoe together for a quick game - it’s often one of the first things she reaches for when friends or family are around.

The build quality feels reassuringly solid and sturdy, very much in keeping with the versions many of us grew up with. The barrel and pirate are robust enough to cope with repeated use, and the swords slot in smoothly. Each round only takes a couple of minutes, which makes it ideal for shorter attention spans and easy to fit in between other activities.

Despite its simplicity, it has great replayability. The anticipation of not knowing which sword will make the pirate pop never seems to wear off, and it consistently gets laughs from both kids and adults. When you’re done, everything packs away neatly, making it easy to store without losing pieces.

A simple, well-made game that’s stood the test of time and still works brilliantly as a fast, inclusive family favourite.
