SYNOPSIS
Shadow Slave is a dark fantasy adventure writter by Guiltythree, published on WebNovel.com and WebNovel App
Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened - an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers. Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters - and other Awakened - in a deadly battle of survival.
What's worse, the shadow powers he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect...
Characters
Sunny
“You know… when I just came here, I was ready to die. After all, in this whole world — two worlds, actually — there's not a single soul who cares whether I live or die. When I'm gone, no one will be sad. No one will even remember that I existed. But then I changed my mind. Somewhere along the way, I decided to survive. I must survive, no matter what...To spite you all.”
― Sunny to the Hero,Chapter 13 Moment of Truth
He is a frail-looking young man with pale skin and dark circles under his eyes. He was unhealthily thin and pale, looking haggard in cheap clothes due to lack of sleep. After surviving his First Nightmare, the changes in his physique were subtle but noticeable. His pale skin seemed a little healthier, his muscles a bit more pronounced. He looked slender and lean instead of emaciated and frail, as he did before. There was a slight luster to his dark hair and a shine to his eye.
Nephis
“This world, Sunny. This cursed place. The Dream Realm. No, I won't be the first one to conquer the Fourth Nightmare. I will be the first one to conquer every Nightmare. I'll go through them one after another, destroying anything and anyone who stands in my way. And when I get to the heart of the Nightmare Spell, I'm going to obliterate every part of it, I'm going to rip it to shreds, I'm going to decimate and bring it to ruin.”
― Nephis to Sunny,Chapter 168 Outside
Nephis was a tall, slender girl around Sunny's age, with clear grey eyes and a detached look on her face. She had silver-white hair that was cut short and neatly parted to the side.
Cassie
“Your Flaw is the most debilitating one I have ever seen or heard of. You are right, without help from someone like Neph, it would have been a certain death sentence. And people like her… well, I'm not even sure that someone else like that exists. But…but that also means that the other side of the Flaw, your power, is equally as extraordinary. You just haven't found the way to grasp it yet. When you do… believe me, you'll remember this conversation and feel very embarrassed about how naive and foolish you were.”
― Sunny to Cassie,Chapter 55 Lucky People
She was delicate, demure, and very pretty. With pale blond hair, big blue eyes, and an exquisite face. She looks like a beautiful porcelain doll.

Glad this masterpiece is finally on Kindle
Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2025This webnovel has consistently been my favorite novel for a couple years now, watching it get more and more chapters over time. I'm glad it's on Kindle now.
There are a lot of things to like about Shadow Slave. The worldbuilding is fantastic, the characters three-dimensionsal and having real development, the power system being one of the most unique I've ever seen, and the story being told in such a way that keeps you reading, chapter after chapter after chapter. Cliffhangers are absolutely evil in this series.
Sunny is not a generic fantasy protagonist with powers that crush any obstacles in his way. Often, he has to use his wits to outsmart his foes, but he does it in a way that feels realistic. There are of course moments where Sunny shines, but he often faces uphill battles, which makes every fight interesting.
One thing that Guiltythree does an excellent making things unpredictable. You might make a guess as to where the story, or some story element is headed. You say to yourself, "Well, I can see that coming a mile away, obviously *this* is going to happen". Then it doesn't. And while you're confused and trying to figure things out, you get sucker punched with what was *actually* planned. It's great. I can never predict where the story will go, only that it will be awesome.
There are a lot of cool things in this series, and as much as I want to say more about it, I think Shadow Slave is best enjoyed knowing little to nothing, going into it.
This series is gold, I tell you. 10/5

A Brilliant Work
Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2023Simply put this is worth a read. This book and the ones in this series are well written to the point I would recommend it to anyone over 13. A breath taking literary masterpiece I'm already in book 3 and cannot get enough. The characters have their own storys and motivations leading to a harrowing plot. It will make you shed a tear and scream Hell yeah in the same chapter. Stunning description and enough mystery to keep you forever on your toes.

Fantastic world building
Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2023I'm not much to leave ratings, let alone reviews, but this series has been a wonderful read so far. While it does fall into a more niche category for writing, the author has managed to weave a truly tangled plotline, develop some amazing depth to their world building/lore, and utilized the LitRPG mechanics without succumbing to power creep. The only problem I have with it is I wish the releases were larger and came daily.

it's great!
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2025Lots of chapters for a fraction of the price on webtoon. It's worth it and then some. This book seems to have more then double the pages of every other book in the set that I can tell, so don't go in thinking each book will be about 600 pages.

Wow
Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2023Wonderful story, and while I was annoyed by a few aspects, the first was the line about how Sunny was named. I guess it just didn't feel organic to the story and was too in line with the title of the book. Another bit was Cassia becoming Cassie and the back and forth with the name. Neph and Changing Star relating to the same person/character, and finally, the sudden ending. All that said, it was a very enjoyable reading experience.

Money grab
Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2026This novel is great to read but it's a money grab. Book1 only covers up to 77 chapters but the 1st volume ends at 95 chapters. Book2 only has 30-40 chapters.

Cliente Amazon5 out of 5 starsOne of the best Novel you could find
Reviewed in Italy on July 3, 2023An incredibly beautiful Novel: complex, intriguing, interesting, and never boring. Excellent action and worldbuilding.
If you are a fan of horror, and Lovecraft in particular, you will remain in awe at the description of the harrowing places and horrors dwelling there.

Ben5 out of 5 starsOne of the best Web novels I've had the pleasure of reading.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2025Previously, web novels didn't do much to keep me reading. This one is completely different however, and after half way in, I couldn’t stop reading.
The author does well to describe everything in a way that you can vividly picture it whilst reading. The story is a bit unique and full of mystery, which I absolutely love. That underlying mystery that keeps you thinking. Much like Re:Zero, in the sense of why and who? This very much replicates that in a way that makes you want/need to finish the story.
The only issue is that this is a web novel so it finishes way too abruptly. Like the author didn't spread it out well enough for a single kindle book. So it kind of forces you to buy the next one but not in the same terms of a cliffhanger. Just in the terms of an unfinished book.
Give it a read if for example, your tired of the instantly strong MC trope. Or, you want something to throughly immerse you quickly rather than suffering through poor pacing. Or, maybe if, like me, you've ran out of light novels to read and want something with a bit more substance.

ISAI R.5 out of 5 starsDidn't expect much, but it's surprisingly entertaining
Reviewed in Mexico on June 3, 2025I had low expectations about this one, but as I continuously heard that shadow slave is a masterpiece, I decided to give it a try. I liked the 2nd half quite enough to make me binge read and go for the next one as soon as I ended this first volume.
