A surprising, charming, and kaleidoscopic history of the Beatles, told through 100 people close to them

The story of the Beatles is more than just their omnipresent songs and their iconic albums. It’s more than the hair, the clothes, the generational defining spirit. It’s even more than Paul and John and George and Ringo. The Beatles wouldn’t be the Beatles without a little help from their friends.

These four legends didn’t change the world in isolation; their story has an incredible supporting cast of family, friends, managers, producers, publicists, ex-bandmates, fellow musicians, and more. These somebodies shaped the Fab Four through ambition, power, friendship, heartbreak, tragedy, intrigue, humor, lust, and of course, love.

Stuart Maconie’s
With a Little Help From Their Friends is the epic story of the iconic band through the people who made them, from childhood days in Liverpool through the crucible of Hamburg and on to international superstardom. It’s a charming mosaic of a book, a fresh look written with deep knowledge and passion.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Does the world really need another Beatles book? If it’s Stuart Maconie’s, the answer is a resounding yes! Too often, the Fab Four are portrayed as solitary, isolated geniuses, but it always takes a community to launch an artistic revolution, and these sublime, succinct, and insightful portraits of the people around the band―some well-known, but many obscure even to the most diehard Beatlemaniacs―entertain and enhance our understanding of exactly what it means to get by with a little help from our friends.”

JIM DEROGATIS, cohost of Sound Opinions and author of Let It Blurt: The Life and Times of Lester Ban

How many of us can honestly say we went to a Beatles' concert as a toddler? Author Stuart Maconie can, thanks to his apparently Beatles loving mother who took him there. So, it's true to say that Maconie has been a fan for his entire life. Well, maybe he didn't quite understand the noise level at the show but he certainly seems to have captured the sense of awe that prevailed. It's that awe and longtime sense of admiration for the band that shines through in his narration. Yep, an author narrating his own book. It'd be easy for him to be gushy and such given his longtime admiration but he does an admirable job containing himself and overall the feel is one of admiration, yes, but with a sense of someone who has had a few years to think about what it all means. His focus here on the people who for one reason or the other, big or small, played a role in the rise of the Beatles is intriguing. I did read a digital copy earlier so my main goal here was to get a feel for his voice and listen to the final section again since, admittedly, I was rather rushed when I was reading.

I'm glad I did opt to review the audio book, too, I must admit. I find myself always picking up on this or that that I missed initially while reading. I won't detail my additions to my Beatles mind stash as that will differ for each individual but one that stands out was early on. For whatever reason I missed that Ivan Vaughn, the then boy who introduced Paul to John, has Parkinson's disease. It's little things like that that add to the humanity of it all for me. Overall, the feel is comfortable, flowing for the most part like a dialogue between friends might. Obviously, just as in real life our minds may drift while friends are talking, yes, you'll probably find yourself zoning out at times only to be brought back by some revelation that you weren't aware of or the context it's mentioned in here. Nothing fancy between chapters/sections, simply stated and then resumes after a short pause. For those who care, the author is British so he's reading with the expected British accent. If you're one of those who likes to speed up audio, I'd suggest you work your way up slowly. I tried to jump in with my usual speed of 1.5 to begin with and found myself having to back off a bit until my American mind adjusted to what I was hearing. After that, no problem.

Bottom line, an enjoyable listen. My original review of the digital copy follows,

    ORIGINAL REVIEW

You've got to respect and author who admits up front that he wrote this because, well, he wanted to write a book about the Beatles. I credit him for not taking the easy way out and doing some repetitive recap of their career. Instead, he takes another angle, taking a look at the people who came into the band members' lives, however long or short, and made a difference. You'll recognize some names and most likely be clueless as to some others but that's part of the charm. Through it all, it's an interesting, if occasionally too brief look at that angle of Beatlemania. I say brief because each gets a chapter, no more, no less, although there is obviously going to be some overlap. Author Stuart Maconie begins with the largely unknown Ivan Vaughn, who was the then young boy who introduced John and Paul way back when. He would later go on to become an academic and had some contact with the band but was not a major figure. It basically concludes that section of the book with a look at Allen Klein who, upfront, Maconie points at as the deciding factor in the band's breakup. Many would agree, I'm sure.

Perhaps the strength of this book is the author's easy going, rather conversational tone and that you're not being asked to tackle heavy topics. I mean, do you really, really need to know about the then young officer tasked with ending the roof top concert? Maybe not, but it was fun to get some perspective on his unexpected role. That's the fun of it all, seeing how serendipity played into many events and the results. Did they all change the world? Nope. That was up to the four lads from Liverpool. But they did have a role and it was both fun and intriguing to be reminded how many things did work out perfectly as opposed to the negative encounters.

This book isn't about the Beatles, mind you, but the people around them. Serious, long time fans will probably recognize many of the names or at least the role they played while less intense fans can just enjoy this for what it is, a fun trip to the past. Bottom line, I enjoyed it and hope to give it another read when time permits. Thanks #Abrams for giving me an early "ticket to ride" ("read"? Grin) back to this look at those in the Beatles' crowded past. I give the author kudos, too, for revealing his own personal favorite Beatle upfront as well as his sense of why the band is worth another book or two as the book winds down. Beatles fans, you definitely will want to read this one.

Stuart Maconie is a journalist and a DJ for the BBC, so he knows music. He decided to write a book about The Beatles, because isn’t that every music fan’s dream? But what kind of book can you write about The Beatles that hasn’t already been done?

Maconie chose to tell the story from the perspective of the people who were friends with the band. He interviewed one hundred individuals who were connected to the members in some way. From the childhood friend who introduced Paul and John in grade school to famous musicians like Bob Dylan, the book shares two or three page stories from each of these voices.

If I’m being honest, the early childhood stories weren’t quite what I was looking for. However, as the book moved into the second section, I really became invested. Hearing from their contemporaries and the collaborators who worked with them on iconic songs was fascinating. Learning about the inspiration behind many of their hits and discovering stories about the band that I had never heard before was a highlight.

If you’ve read books about The Beatles and think you’ve heard it all, this is the one to pick up.

------ Well laid out, interesting stories, this type of history always makes me questions if it is true so that was not my thing.

This entertaining and informative book tells the epic story of the Beatles through the lens of the people who shaped them: family, friends, managers, and fellow musicians. The target audience seems to be readers (especially Brits) who are familiar with Beatles lore. Others may occasionally feel as if they’re missing something, but not enough to affect their enjoyment of the book. The audiobook narration is well done.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

I’m another who’s read/watched a lot about the Beatles, all the better known books, and a load of others, and this is up with the best. For those wondering what more might be left to be said, Stuart Maconie has pulled off the unlikely feat of finding a novel and effective way of looking at the story (and incidentally, with its bite-size sections, making this a very easy book to dip in and out of). For me, his strength is that, simply put, he gets it. I don’t just mean he’s a superfan of the music (though that he clearly is). More than that, he’s one of that small group of Beatle authors with finely -tuned insight into the group’s wider impact on society and culture, and the whys and hows behind that. Constant talk of how the Beatles changed the entire world in 7 years or so must sound like boomer cliche but for those who were around in the ‘60s, even the very young and the too old, even for those who just weren’t fans, it was impossible not to be aware of these changes quite clearly as they happened. Despite his ostensibly narrow approach of focusing on a carefully assembled list of individuals, he manages to convey this impact. And yes there are one or two proof-reading slips but these are inconsequential.

Yet another book about the Beatles - but one telling the story from a different perspective. Even the most ardent Beatles fan will find something new in Stuart Maconie's book, which is both funny and interesting. And, in its own way, unputdownable. Highly recommended

I’m enjoying this book, a good reference manual to remind Beatles fanatics who’s who. You can pick it up and read a few pages and get information on one character, then not pick it up for a while and read about someone else, great idea! A photo of each person as they looked at the time would have been nice, but a Beatle fan will know, or will be able to find them in one of their many other books! Recommend!!👍🏼

Why do we need ANOTHER book about the Beatles. Well, technically we don’t, however, if we were having one then I’d definitely recommend this one! I heard Stuart talk about this at a Beatles convention and had to get it. It goes through lots of people around the Beatles and what impact they had. I enjoyed it so much that I then went on to buy copies for a couple of Beatles mad friends. Really interesting read.
