The Issue

As an Anishinaabe woman, water protector, and environmental activist, I have witnessed the destructive impact of industrial projects on our natural resources and communities. Now, a similar threat looms over Manitoba, Canada, as Sio Silica plans to initiate a mining project with methods unproven to be safe for our environment. Despite their claims of utilizing 'new technology', their assurances lack transparency and fail to provide credible evidence ensuring safety.

Sio Silica's operations risk irreparable damage to the environment and disregard the voice and rights of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in the area. Consultations with impacted communities have been minimal, leaving vital questions around their application process, potential climate change implications, and environmental risks unanswered.

Instead of transparent public engagement, Sio Silica seems to be maneuvering behind closed doors. Recently, the company has approached the leadership of Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, attempting to secure backing to legitimize their project. This approach not only undermines community consensus but also segregates Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, aggravating social division.

It’s crucial that we demand accountability and transparency from Sio Silica. Their mining project, if allowed to proceed without comprehensive community engagement and environmental assurances, threatens our shared land, water, and livelihoods, and Manitobans deserve better.

Join me in urging the local government and relevant authorities to halt Sio Silica’s mining license approval until all voices are heard and environmental safety is secured. Sign this petition and stand up for our environment, our communities, and future generations.
