Candidatus
Candidatus és un estatus provisional per a taxons de qualsevol rang que no s'han pogut descriure amb prou detall per justificar l'establiment d'un nou tàxon, generalment a causa de l'absència d'un cultiu pur. La nomenclatura dels tàxons Candidatus no està incorporada a les regles del Codi Internacional de Nomenclatura de Procariotes i, per tant, aquests noms no tenen cap validesa en la nomenclatura dels procariotes.[1]
Quan un organisme amb l'estatus Candidatus s'aïlla posteriorment i el cultiu pur es descriu prou bé, el nom es pot presentar per a la seva validació d'acord amb les regles del codi. L'antic nom Candidatus s'elimina de la llista Candidatus.[1]
Per exemple, Candidatus Methanoflorentaceae. Noteu que la paraula Candidatus, però no el nom que segueix, està escrita en cursiva.[1]
