CodeX Newsletter – May 2026
The May 2026 CodeX Newsletter has just been published! It includes the latest updates on all our use cases, sharing new work being done across our community to enhance cancer data interoperability and improve real-world evidence generation. Be sure to check it out to stay current with our ongoing efforts toward a unified oncology data ecosystem. Click Subscribe so you will be notified about future newsletter editions.
Objective
In the Oncology space, CodeX Members are achieving interoperability by integrating and testing the mCODE (minimal Common Oncology Data Elements) FHIR Implementation Guide -- an open standard language for cancer data -- within Use Cases that test new workflows supporting better cancer care and research.
CodeX is leveraging the CodeX/mCODE experience, building vibrant communities and solving real-world challenges in additional new domains: Cardiovascular and Genomics.

Impact!
CodeX is driven by its Community, and the community's prioritization of the most important challenges and potential solutions to collaborate on together. CodeX Use Cases - including collection and sharing of patient data for Real-World-Data clinical trials, matching patients with trials, radiation therapy, prior authorization, and registry reporting - demonstrate the potential to improve care and research. This demonstration is achieved through high-quality FHIR standards (free and open for all to use), implementations in software (commercial or open source products) and tested in new workflows, all piloted in-the-field by the stakeholders expected to benefit in the future.

CodeX in the News
- CodeX launches Use Case Dashboard. The dashboard provides increased transparency into active CodeX use cases, their current status, and progress across the accelerator.
- CodeX published the May Newsletter on LinkedIn.
- CodeX's Prior Authorization in Medical Oncology use case (led by Amy Krane) published insights from physicians and administrators on the challenges of prior authorization in medical oncology and the opportunity for FHIR-based automation to reduce burden, improve data exchange, and support more efficient access to cancer treatment. The article summarizes what CodeX heard from oncology stakeholders and highlights how the Prior Authorization in Medical Oncology use case is advancing standards-based approaches with partners across the healthcare ecosystem.
- CodeX presents at HIMSS 2026 on Genomics: The Road to Data Liquidity with Jim Chen (Tempus) and Bob Dolin (Elimu). This panel discussion highlighted the importance of making genomics data more interoperable, accessible, and actionable across healthcare and research settings. The session reinforced CodeX’s role in advancing standards-based approaches that support real-world implementation and improved data exchange.
- CodeX leadership facilitated a meeting during the May 2026 HL7 Working Group Meeting in Rotterdam, bringing together leaders from HL7 Europe and the Phoenix Accelerator as well as leaders from the mCODE team. The goal is to identify how the community might collaborate to align the European Common Cancer Data Model (ECCDM) initiative with mCODE (minimum common oncology data elements).
