Reflections on a challenging season

August was a tough month in the region as the Spokane Complex Fires tore through neighborhoods and beloved landscapes, including Riverside State Park. We're grateful to all of the first responders and firefighters who spent weeks in dangerous conditions to protect the impacted areas, but our hearts go out to the 800 families displaced from the fires.

As State Parks continues to assess the damage to Riverside State Park, much of the Park and portions of the Centennial Trail remain closed. State Parks staff are working diligently to continue logging operations and power pole replacements along the utility corridor, as well as hazard tree removal along trails so that areas of the park can be reopened as quickly as it is safe to do so. However, some areas may not be open until next spring. Thank you for respecting all Trail and park closures to allow staff to work safely.

We hope each of you are finding ways through this difficult season and appreciate all of your care and concern for the Trail during this time. We're working with Parks to keep everyone updated on the current status of closures, as well as repair and recovery efforts, and will continue to share more as know more.

As always, don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or comments about the Trail, and we look forward to a return to full Trail access when it's safe and feasible to do so. Enjoy the rest of the summer and best of luck as we begin the transition into fall!

Trail & Parks updates

There are a few detours and closures currently impacting the Trail:

  • Seven Mile: starting Monday, August 31, 7 Mile Rd will be closed between 9 Mile Rd (Hwy 291) and the 7 Mile bridge for sewer installation at the Sundance Meadows Development. This work is expected to be completed at the beginning of October. (Park and Trail locations unaffected by fire closures west of the Spokane River remain open but must be accessed using the detour.)

  • Mission Park: the City of Spokane is replacing sewer line located under the Centennial Trail south of Mission Park. Trail users are being detoured around the construction area using the existing trail in Mission Park, and the sidewalk along Superior Street (see graphic). This work is expected to be completed in early September.

  • Riverside State Park: Due to the Spokane Complex fires, portions of Riverside State Park, including the Centennial Trail (from Equestrian Lane to the Wilbur Trailhead), remain closed. Visit the Riverside Wildfire Recovery website for updates on Park conditions, as well as a map of what is currently open.

More to come as we explore with WA State Parks how we can support Trail (and park) restoration and repair efforts in Riverside State Park.

Stay up to date on the status of Trail and Parks projects and closures on the Centennial Trail Updates website and Riverside Wildfire Recovery site.
