My experience of "meeting" Elena @ the Sydney International, 2010
Sorry to not have updated over the Summer -- I know Elena has been very busy in Malaysia & then in Perth, playing Hopman Cup for Russia. That was a disappointment, but Elena performed very well *she even aced Andy Murray, lmao*. But something very exciting happened to me today...
I saw Elena today, for the first time ever! :) I was actually quite disappointed at the time - not because Elena wasn't lovely... she totally was, but she was a little rushed after practice unfortunately, & she didn't look very genuinely happy, just kind of tired (Jankovic, too). I nervously passed on something to her that I made (just a crappy little gift, because I'm awkward) & she said "oh, thank you", quickly signed a flag & a few friends' things and moved across the tiny crowd that'd gathered & was so sweet. Very friendly. A friend I was with noticed Elena politely refused to take a photo with someone, though (she professed she was rushing!)...I am *so* glad that wasn't me facing that kind of rejection (too shy to even ask for a photo...I had to be prompted by a friend to just approach her), I would've just died of disappointment. Anyway, so I come bearing a few photos - from her amazing match against Schiavone (don't know how it looked on television, but it was great live...apart from a few shoddy drop shot attempts ;)), as well as her practice session which was really strong. I'll also post a video of this & her match point either separately or within this post ASAP. Elena's looking good, guys, but I should note something that surprised me - she was a lot slimmer, young looking & shorter than I expected in person (and more beautiful, as if that was possible?), it was surreal. Sorry for the poor stadium shots - I had distant (but well placed) seats & was forced to use a 16x zoom...I have better ones for Tuesday. Does anyone else here besides Kait have a Twitter? I'm @mayabg, if you want to follow...I have a list of players I saw/met (Vika, Jankovic, Serena Williams, etc.) & if you're interested, I can send you photos. I can only hope tomorrow is a quarter as good as today was!
