Brian Balch (born July 2, 1982), better known by the ring name Bryan Idol, is an American professional wrestler and promoter. He is signed to the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), where he is the reigning NWA National Heavyweight Champion. He also serves as a national promoter for the NWA and promotes NWA Chicago.[1]
Balch has also competed under the ring names Earl Cooter and Mercurio, among others. His career has included wrestling in the United States and internationally.
Professional wrestling career
[edit]Early career and independent circuit
[edit]Balch began his professional wrestling career during the 2000s, initially performing under the ring name Earl Cooter. He later competed under the names Bryan Idol and Mercurio, among others. In 2018, WWE described Balch as an independent wrestling veteran with approximately ten years of experience and noted that he had competed under the names Earl Cooter and Bryan Idol.[2]
In 2011, wrestling under the name Earl Cooter, Balch won the FTW Gen-X Championship in a three-way match against Grim Reefer and Josh Daniels. In 2014, he defeated Justin Credible to win the FTW World Heavyweight Championship.[3]
Balch has competed internationally, including appearances in Japan and Puerto Rico. In 2019, he participated in wrestling events and training opportunities in Japan associated with Marvelous.[3]
WWE tryout
[edit]In February 2018, Balch participated in a WWE Performance Center talent tryout in Orlando, Florida. WWE identified him as an independent wrestling veteran and noted his previous work under the names Earl Cooter and Bryan Idol. The company also noted that he had wrestled Tony Nese and Goldust.[2]
World Wrestling Council
[edit]Balch appeared for World Wrestling Council (WWC) in Puerto Rico under the ring name Bryan Idol.
On January 20, 2024, Idol defeated Jovan to win the WWC Television Championship at WWC Euphoria 2024.[4]
Idol subsequently became involved in the NWA's renewed relationship with WWC. In 2024, the two promotions announced a working relationship, with outside reporting identifying Idol as one of the figures involved in facilitating the relationship.[5]
National Wrestling Alliance
[edit]Balch began appearing regularly for the National Wrestling Alliance as Bryan Idol and Mercurio. He became associated with Natalia Markova as part of the tag team The Looks That Kill.
In June 2024, the NWA signed Idol to a multi-year exclusive contract. The agreement included both his work as an in-ring performer and an official position as the company's national promoter. According to reporting at the time, his responsibilities included helping the promotion locate venues and expand into new markets.[6]
Idol later stated that the contract was for three years.[7]
The NWA identifies Idol as the promoter of NWA Chicago.[1]
At the 2025 Crockett Cup, Idol defeated Carson Bartholomew Drake to win the vacant NWA World Television Championship.[8]
Idol defended the championship before relinquishing it under the NWA's "Lucky Seven Rule" in order to receive an opportunity to challenge for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship.[9]
On August 15, 2026, Idol defeated Mike Mondo on NWA Powerrr to win the NWA National Heavyweight Championship for the first time.[10]
As of September 2026, Idol remains the NWA National Heavyweight Champion. The NWA's official website lists him as the current champion and has continued to advertise him in that capacity.[11]

[edit]The Smashing Pumpkins
[edit]Idol and Natalia Markova appeared in the music video for "Beguiled" by The Smashing Pumpkins. The two subsequently incorporated professional wrestling into live performances of the song during the band's concert appearances.
Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who is also the owner of the NWA, discussed Idol and Markova's involvement in the performances in an interview with Revolver.[12]
Markova subsequently discussed the performances in an interview with WrestleZone, stating that she and Idol had appeared in the "Beguiled" video before bringing elements of the storyline to the band's live shows.[13]
Training and coaching
[edit]In November 2025, Idol trained Nick Hogan at the Fight The World Wrestling academy. Hogan subsequently discussed the training session while discussing the possibility of pursuing professional wrestling.[14]
