Eduardo Caamaño (born 6 September 1972) is a writer and essayist whose work focuses primarily on biography, history and, more recently, Greek mythology. He has published biographies of Manfred von Richthofen, Harry Houdini, Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe, Alberto Santos-Dumont and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, as well as several works on historical subjects.[1]

Biography

Eduardo Caamaño was born on 6 September 1972 in Rio de Janeiro, into a family of Galician emigrants settled in Brazil. His mother is from O Carballiño, in the province of Ourense, while his father is from the area of Negreira, in the province of A Coruña. He later settled in Galicia, where he has combined his professional and literary activities.[2]

His first publications were related to project management. In 2011, he published Project Management Práctico: técnicas, herramientas y documentos, a technical work devoted to project-management methods and tools. He subsequently shifted his work towards biography and popular history.[3]

He studied creative writing at Camilo José Cela University and screenwriting for fiction at the RTVE Institute.[1] Alongside his literary work, he has pursued a professional career in business consulting.[2]

A significant part of Caamaño's work is devoted to biography. Several of his books concern figures associated with aviation and military history. El Barón Rojo focuses on Manfred von Richthofen, the German fighter pilot of the First World War; the book was the subject of an article by Jacinto Antón in El País.[4] He also published a biography of Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont, reviewed in the Revista de Aeronáutica y Astronáutica,[5] followed by a work on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, reviewed in Nueva Revista.[1]

His biographies also cover figures from literature and entertainment. He wrote a book about illusionist Harry Houdini, discussed in La Vanguardia by journalist Xavi Ayén;[6] Caamaño also took part in an event organised by the Fundación Telefónica in connection with an exhibition devoted to Houdini.[3]

Arthur Conan Doyle. La biografía definitiva del creador de Sherlock Holmes was reviewed in El Cultural[7] and the cultural magazine Cualia.[8]

His biography of Agatha Christie was discussed in La Vanguardia[9] and reviewed in the Uruguayan newspaper la diaria.[10]

His book on Edgar Allan Poe was reviewed in La Razón[11] and in República de las Letras.[12]

History and mythology

Outside biography, Caamaño has published popular works on military history and other historical subjects. Historia de la Cruz de Hierro. La condecoración militar más célebre del mundo traces the origins, development and symbolism of the Iron Cross, a German military decoration; the book was the subject of an article by Manuel P. Villatoro in the cultural supplement of the newspaper ABC.[13] His work has also addressed the Crusades and the history of the automobile.

He has also written on Greek mythology. Hércules. La biografía mitológica del hijo favorito de Zeus, devoted to Heracles, received the 24th Fernando Arenas Quintela Prize for Literature and Essay in 2024.[14] He continued exploring this subject with Troya. Una guerra mitológica narrada por Zeus, a work devoted to the Trojan War.
